if you think finding 703 is hard..

try finding some Johns Manville 817....

Odd how things are...

I have purchased this product by the bale at a north Fort Worth, TX supplier.

9 2x4 sheets for $70.

I'd be glad to deliver to anyone who wants some but the fee will be fairly steep... :D

There's a place on Duke st. in Alexandria that sells it (I'm actually from that area myself originally). I don't know the name or phone # of the place, but there's actually a lot of places that have in it VA from doing some talking to people and reading. Check the home theater forums, soundandvisionmag.com or avsforum.com... one of those places actually has a thread where everone list exactly where they got their OC 703.. I remember seeing the one in Alex. because it caught my attention being I was from the area. But there were a lot of place in D.C. and VA from what I remember reading. If I come back across it I'll post the link. It also list other cities and states also, you just kinda gotta sift through some of the posts... GL

just a mention - acoustic ceiling tiles are often made out of rigid fiberglass.
peel off the vinyl facing and stack them up - voila!, 703-equivalent panels.
available every-frickin-where.
cheers

This wont help but if it makes you feel any better, the suppliers down here in western North Carolina don't know what 703 is either. Foam, celulose, rolls of pink or yellow stuff are easy to find, rigid fiberglass is a whole different thing.

I spoke with SPI in Greensboro. They said that they can special order 703, but it is quite expensive. They recommended rockwool, which has nearly identical acoustic properties. I'm probably going to get that. I don't remember exactly what they quoted me, as it was a few months ago, but it wasn't outrageous. They have a location in Charlotte, too.

Thanks for the posts.

I won't have to compress my own insullation after all. :D

I went to the Cornings site, found a distributor in my area, called them and they ordered the 703 for me. No big deal at all. I got 6-2'x4'x2" pieces for about $90. Did you try finding a distributor using this page?

Yes, actually I did call them. I spoke with a salesperson at OC. She said that since I wasn't a commercial customer she couldn't tell me where to find it. ??? I even said "all I want to know is who sells it in my area so I can find it and buy it." Still she wouldn't help me out. I called back later and disguised my voice and lied to them. I said "Yes, I'm a contractor." They referred me to a place in Frederick, MD. But they didn't have it either.

So, that is why I decided to vent on this form instead. I swear, this forum has answered all of life's vexing questions for me. :D

I guess I should have mentioned in my previous thread that I actually purchased JM 817 from McCormick Insulation, and it was as easy as making one phone call to place the order and one car trip to pick up the merchandise. The people at McCormick were pleasant, helpful, and completely unconcerned that I only wanted two bundles of 817. (Nine sheets in each).

Call 'em, Jack.

Update:

Bingo. Thanks HapiCmpur. I called McCormick and they have it, with foil backing for $2.27/sq. ft. That works out to just a little more than OC 703, from the ATS Acoustics site. However, the shipping from ATS is steep: $35 for 2 6-packs of 24x48x2". So, i'm going with Johns Manville 817.

It will be a 2 hour trip, but worth it.

If you're looking for a substitute for 703, try JM 814 - not 817.

Really? How are 814 and 817 different?

Bryan's got a point. JM817 is twice as dense as both JM814 and OC703. JM 817 is more comparable to OC705. Below I've copied some of the relevant absorption coefficients from Bobgolds.com. The first three are for 2" thick sheets at 3 pcf density, and the next three are for 2" thick sheets at 6 pcf density. (I believe "FRK" signifies foil backing in OC lingo.)

OC703, plain 2" (51mm) on wall 3.0 pcf (48 kg/m3) 0.17 0.86 1.14 1.07 1.02 0.98 1.00

OC703, FRK 2" (51mm) on wall 3.0 pcf (48 kg/m3) 0.63 0.56 0.95 0.79 0.60 0.35 0.75

JM814 2" (51mm) 3pcf (48kg/m3) 0.24 1.00 1.11 1.08 1.06 1.05 1.05

OC705, plain 2" (51mm) on wall 6.0 pcf (96 kg/m3) 0.16 0.71 1.02 1.01 0.99 0.99 0.95

OC705, FRK 2" (51mm) on wall 6.0 pcf (96 kg/m3) 0.60 0.50 0.63 0.82 0.45 0.34 0.60

JM817 2" (51mm) 6pcf (96kg/m3) 0.38 0.93 1.10 1.07 1.07 1.07 1.05

Hope this helps. If you're in the mood for more comparison shopping, go here: http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm.

Outstanding, HapiCampr!
But, if I'm understanding this right, the 814 and 817 really are close in their absorption. So close are the specs that the margin of error itself probably makes the differences moot. Yes?

Also, its rather hilarious how they explain that a sample can have an absorption of more than 1.00 (100%)! That went over my head for sure. :D

Also, I'm confused on one other thing:

Would these tests be run with the FRK to the wall, or facing out? I read somewhere that bass traps are best with the foil faced outward. I would think that whether you place the foil to the wall or faced out would affect the results; that is, if you are using it for mids and highs. The usual application of these if for highs and mids. At least, that is what I need them for.

You're going to want to get a second opinion on this, but I'm pretty sure the foil goes toward the wall in most applications. If the foil faces out into the room, most sound waves will bounce off of it (back into the room) instead of getting absorbed by the fiberglass.

In my case, I didn't get the foil backing. I mounted each of my panels with an air gap of several inches between them and the wall, thinking that this would increase absorption by catching soundwaves sneaking around behind the panel and also by trapping some of the stronger waves that managed to push through the panel, bounce off the wall, and come back into the panel. Foil on either side would reflect those waves away from the fiberglass and back into my room. This makes sense intuitively (to me, anyway), but that doesn't mean that it works that way in the real world.

You'll probably want to do a little more research on the foil issue. You might consider starting a new thread with foil in the title. Some of the guys with knowledge on this subject might be skipping this thread because they don't have anything to say about where to buy OC703.

For reflection dutes, pull the foil off or at least face it to the wall. For bass control, depends on if you want pretty much just bass/low mids or full broadband.

If you want broadband, again, pull the foil. If just bass, have the foil face out into the room.

I'd recommend the 703 or 814 for a couple of reasons...

- it's half the cost
- in reflection duties with shallow angles of reflection, some things can actually skip off denser materials
- see #1 - for 75% of the money, you can get 50% more thickness (6" of 703/814 for 25% less than 4" of 705/817) and it will perform better.

I got mine from ATS Acoustics. The website.

I just ordered 2 boxes based off of your recommendation. Ordered it yesterday, got it today. Very pleased! I had been messing around trying to get a local supplier to order the CertainTeed brand equivalent. They weren't calling me back, so I was glad to find ATS. It was probably about $15-20 more than if I would have gotten my local supplier to get off his ass. However, the amount of time I would have spent chasing it down was worth the extra cost.

Update: Just got my 2 boxes of 24x48x2 703 non-foil, from bpape (Sensible Sound Solutions). It took only a few days to deliver.

I'm a happy camper. The saga is over!

So, I highly recommend Bryan's outfit, Sensible Sound Solutions.

THE END.
