whats the deal with warmoth/fender?

Rubbish, as I said before plenty of people ask for custum headstocks with no logo. Here's one I finished just recently. The only thing the guy changed was to have the truss rod cover in rosewood. I haven't got a pic of that. His design, his Idea, no logo.

That Fender logo should not go on anything but a Fender. Period and a correct period fender for the decal style at that, anything else is piracy and copy rite fraud. Tell me if you record a Clapton solo on it does that make you Clapton?

Don't like the design of the truss cover, too pointy... The rest is stunning...

Nice marquetry. That, along with inlay, are two things I avoid as much as possible. No matter how tight I get them, I always feel it should be better. Most of the time, I just send inlay stuff out to Larry Robinson, cause, well, his work is amazing and he can do it in about 1/10th the time it would take me to get results which were not nearly as good as his.

Larry did this butterfly for a guy I know, and only charged him $350. That's on a heal cap, and all of about an inch long. If I tried, it wouldn't look nearly that good, and I'd have to charge $750 or more. Why try to compete when you can't possibly, you know?

It may not have a logo, but this headstock is anything but "blank" or plain. Wow.... she's a beaut'.
Haven't see you 'round much Mutt.... where ya been, you ole sweet talker? :)

Muttley, I would LOVE to see some more pictures of your work, if you don't mind. That's beautiful, man.

Generally speaking I don't post examples of my work here. I only posted this as an example that a logo is essentially just an add an IMHO opinion is only important to those that want to show they have a "so and so" guitar. A guitar is a guitar and if it works for you then it's brand or name count for nothing.

I come here to learn about recording and because a lot of good info was here I started putting a bit back and just kept doing so..:)

I reality there isn't too much special about that headstock, after 30 years you do get an eye for detail and good lines. To me thats what that design has. It was a combination of the guys original idea and me putting it on paper and then making the thing. The body it sits on was inspired by the lines you see on a shark, hence the fin like shape to the headstock. He or I didn't want to go too crazy on the amount of "shark" type stuff, just hint at it. This one was fun to build. As a last taster here's a pic of the body. After that I'm going back to be the usual annoying little know it all that I can be round here..:D

Veneer and inlay work I'm quite happy with partly because years ago most of my apprenticeship as a cabinet maker was done at Rolls Royce and then BA corperate jets. I trained on doing all the fancy burr panels with post formed edges and then building highly specialised aircraft furniture in the same vein at BA. The job I most often pass on are finishing of sunbursts because I know a guy who does simply the best work I've ever seen. I can do them but as you know we are are always ultra critical of our own work (we have to be) he just seems to get the look I want without the hassle. He retires in a few years and I have no idea what I'm going to do then. Even though he has shown me how many many times.:o

I've got a butterfly inlay to do in the next week or so. Hope I can nail the detail like that one.

Nice proportions on that. The f-holes are a bit bigger than tradition, overall, aren't they? The look nice.

Oh I've been about just had lots of work on. I now drop in late most nights as workshop time is getting the better of me. There hasn't really been many luthier type threads recently either. You guys can easily handle the rest..:D

That kind of depends on what F holes you take as an example. The traditional older style Gibson et al, yes. In recent years the trend has been to use larger more open f holes. I think it kind of started with D'aquisto but we are all doing it now. From a voicing point of view I find to a point, the wider and further apart the more the sound opens up. At a certain point it just goes muddy. This has the added issue of being two part holes. That is a general observation though, as you know we can only point in the right direction the rest is down to, well the rest really.:)

When doing something like that one I used parallel bracing to compensate for any muddy sound and left the top quite thick in the centre to help the balance. It came out great. It was a very nice piece of German spruce as well so it should get warmer. Acoustically it holds it's own. I'm going to be building another one based on the same sort of design for him soon.

The winter was pretty rough, but it was also cold as shit so we are swamped with humidity repairs right now (it's getting hard to find a place to stand these days, what with all the cases). Dad and I tend to feel the economy more, as high end custom guitars are without question a discretionary item, but the repair folks just keep chugging along. If your guitar is broken, you gotta fix it whatever the economy. The week dollar is sure making wood expensive though. I'd give a lot right now to have the purchasing strength of your money.

I have been buying up some maple from Canada and the US. Our pound doesn't do that well elsewhere and I can't sell back across the pond at present but that about it really. Most of my sales are to Europe.

I have quite a few publicity pics and brochures that I send out on request or hand out at shows and festivals etc. I don't really post them online because I hang out here and like to keep myself to myself. Just my choice really. If you PM me I'll drop a few over if your really interested.

Hey, that makes sense to me... I won't ask you to give up your privacy to settle some idle curiosity, since the way the dollar's tanking right now, I'm not about to pony up for an imported custom axe any time soon. :/

That said, that body is a worthy mate for that headstock. Goddamn, dude, you have an eye for lines...
