And I've made a couple of friends here that I'll have for years even if the internet breaks tomorrow, LOL. yeah, that's a good thing.

Hmmm.... that sounds like a topic for a "happy song". :)

Yesterday all my backups seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay.
Oh, I believe in yesterday

Suddenly there’s not half the files there used to be
But I thought I had them on CD.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Where did my data go?
I don’t know, I just can’t say.
I pressed something wrong
And the files just went away -ay -ay –ay.

Yesterday all my deadlines seemed so far away
Now I’ll be working here all night and day.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

The problem with listening to your own music is that you project what you want to hear on it. The best thing to do is to just put it away for a while and come back to it. When Ed and a few others told me that the low end was too much on my last effort, I at first thought "nah, they just don't know what I'm going for"....but I decided to wait a couple weeks and listen again, and holy smokes, they were right...what was I thinking? The resulting mix has maybe a little less character, but a less ANNOYING character. :) It is important that you don't change something until you can hear why it needs to be changed I think...otherwise you don't really learn anything.

That about sums it up folks. Thanks for coming :)

I am probably a "first impression" snob. If something isn't right it usually doesn't take long to hear. I will do my best to listen to the entire tune. There is a lot of stuff I have DL'd and played for family and friends because it's usually outstanding writing, playing, or recording that must be heard!!

Since I am a verified beginner at the recording part, my comments tend to be general unless I can specify something and offer a solution. As time has progressed, I have been able to "hear" more of the things other people point out in songs, including why they are important. This is probably the greatest plus I have aquired from this clinic. There are usually comments from very experienced people that have made me rethink my mixes, and even writing. Comparing my mix to a proCD is one thing, but comparing it to stuff that was done with similiar gear is a big help.

I confess that if I can't say something positive, I usually mind my own business. I know this doesn't help whomever has posted but there are usually plenty of people to point out flaws.
When your knowledge is limited, it can be intimidating to try and give specific advice.

Your idea is very smart dobro. Not only are you able to get solid advice from someone you are familiar with, you also have the chance to help each other and save a few dollars while improving your mix.

When this happens it would be nice to share a before/after version and share the ideas and results of the co-production.

Well there's the formal part of the forum, "the mix is that, it needs more this" as well, in a lot of ways it's like a jam; he plays some guitar, then you play one of yours, then she sings a few etc...not that I'm speaking from much personal participation other than listening.

I've dl'ed a fair amount from here. There's been 5 or 10 (maybe a few more) songs from here that I went through a phase of listening to quite frequently.

"Suddenly there’s not half the files there used to be

Nice one, Ian.

Chris - gotcha, thanks.

Slack - gotcha 2, thanks.

There's something else going on here too. This place is turning into a community, not just of people who hang together and exchange ideas and give each other shit and make jokes, but as a pool of taste and talent. There are big opportunities just starting to get explored here, and serious limitations haven't even begun to appear on the horizon yet. Instead of having a producer, I put a song up here and get a dozen or more different impressions that span a whole range of listening ability. What a free for all. What an opportunity.

I've listened to Many Years From Now about 100 times. Its one of my favorite songs from here or anywhere--both the original and the B. Sabbath produced versions.

hey Mr.C, actually 'many years from now' was the song mixmkr did with Erland.. My collab was 'hope my eyes meet you.'

I'm not sure I understand what the question is in this thread, but if it is 'how many times do I listen to something before I comment?' my answer is it depends.. If it's something I don't like, I'll listen once and type as it's playing.. If it's something I like, I'll listen several times before opening my big mouth..

As far as why I post here, that's easy.. I want the best sounding recordings I can get, and people around me just say things like 'sounds great' or some other type of watered down response.. I want to be able to send someone (non musician) a song in an email, and know that it sounds good when they get it..

Also, I want to leave behind a great sounding CD or two when I die..

It's all a man can really ask for...

I've learned to hear sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many things in a different light through this site. hear things...light...oh well it makes sense to me...

Dobro- great comments.

Sam- When you get the quality of sound that you do, you're not always going to get the help you're looking for.

god bless the internet. i do have a serious bandwidth limitation though..........but only until next friday when I get DSL! then i won't have to skip so many posts. enough about that, dobro i have noticed that we are starting to get some metrics and standards in this clan. it's like i rely on triple M to pick out cliches and wavering pitch, mixmkr and Sluice to figure out exactly which frequency is troubling, chrisharris to tell everyone how much he sucks even though he always has spot on bass frequency comments, crawdad to give up the golden nugget of information that you're missing, and everyone to tell you how much your canned drums sound like canned drums.

so far i've noticed the following standards of style in this place
1. anything but real drums is going to sound short of real drums
2. autotune = bad
3. too much reverb gets people digging in their heels on either side of the argument.
4. doubled guitars are very acceptable.
5. doubled vocal singing the same melody is very hard to pull off without negative feedback.
6. vocals usually need to be more up front than you think.
7. everyone wants to own a taylor guitar
8. i still don't know what 'shredding' means but it's either good or bad.
9. everyone winds up owning a piece of studio projects gear at some point in their stay here.
