There's something else going on here too. This place is turning into a community, not just of people who hang together and exchange ideas and give each other shit and make jokes, but as a pool of taste and talent. There are big opportunities just starting to get explored here, and serious limitations haven't even begun to appear on the horizon yet. Instead of having a producer, I put a song up here and get a dozen or more different impressions that span a whole range of listening ability. What a free for all. What an opportunity.
god bless the internet. i do have a serious bandwidth limitation though..........but only until next friday when I get DSL! then i won't have to skip so many posts. enough about that, dobro i have noticed that we are starting to get some metrics and standards in this clan. it's like i rely on triple M to pick out cliches and wavering pitch, mixmkr and Sluice to figure out exactly which frequency is troubling, chrisharris to tell everyone how much he sucks even though he always has spot on bass frequency comments, crawdad to give up the golden nugget of information that you're missing, and everyone to tell you how much your canned drums sound like canned drums.
so far i've noticed the following standards of style in this place
1. anything but real drums is going to sound short of real drums
2. autotune = bad
3. too much reverb gets people digging in their heels on either side of the argument.
4. doubled guitars are very acceptable.
5. doubled vocal singing the same melody is very hard to pull off without negative feedback.
6. vocals usually need to be more up front than you think.
7. everyone wants to own a taylor guitar
8. i still don't know what 'shredding' means but it's either good or bad.
9. everyone winds up owning a piece of studio projects gear at some point in their stay here.
