Im thinking about puting together my own studio what do u think would be the beter choice. should i get alesis home studio pack or should get something like the tascam 788 8 track portastudio are adats geting phased out

ADATs are hardly being phased out...

...they are an excellent piece of gear. If you go that route - I'd go with the XT20 over the LX20 though........

Hard Disc recorders such as the 788 and models by Roland and Yamaha offer increased editing capabilities and the ability to store multiple takes on the sams track ("virtual tracks") but they have a steeper learning curve than tape based systems. It is also usually necessary to purchase some type of back up system such as a CD burner or Zip drive to archive the data on the hard disc once it is full.

What I've always thought of as "the thing" with those all-in-one harddisk recorders, is that it might be so that you end up paying for a lot of features that you'll never use. With an ADAT, you get just that. You get what you pay for.

Just a thought.
