That's funny ... now I know you have better ears than me but I chose the Alesis M1 actives over the 8.2 actives. I guess neither of them is what you have or used to have, but still interesting. I thought there was detail missing from the 8.2As and somehow they sounded a bit 'plasticky' (I tested again some of the actually plastic Genelec 8030As to make sure I wasn't imagining it!!).

Perhaps the amps put in the monitors has made the difference ... or maybe I'm at odds with everyone for no good reason (wouldn't be the first time :))?

I'm starting to wonder if the 5" and subs are better than the 8" alone?
I may have thought the BX5 sounded like poop...but then realizing today,
they had more mid and highs than say the BX8, so with a sub...maybe better
seperation?

so noisedude, i agree..is it me? I've been amazed at the polls on the B-Truths too!
and at GC the Salesman and me both kinda looked at each other, "like cool!"
when the Alesis were turned on....very strangz, indeeed.

Even with nearfields I think we're seriously into the importance of room acoustics here. Add to that the imprecision of ported cabinets, although the W'dales are better than the Active Alesis (I had identical ones to you noisedude) there is still a lot going on at the low end I can't hear properly. The only answer is proper bass trapping and a sub.

Nik there is no evidence whatsoever that your ears are not better than mine :) Can't believe you preferred the Alesis though, but it is interesting that on the UK Sound on Sound bbs (where judging by the MP3 postings there is as much ability / talent / experience as on this bbs) they are nowhere near as unpopular.

The bass is VERY flabby on the Alesis M1As, but we shoved socks in the bass ports and isolated the speakers from the surface they're sat on and they're much better now.

The M1As got a great SOS review from Paul White ... all I know is that I could hear stuff on the Alesis set that I couldn't hear on the Wharfedales or the Blue Sky Media Desk (which also got a sycophantic review in SOS!!). Also, I was able to get hold of some as new ones for £150 ... which I suppose may have influenced my thinking on the matter ... :)

Just trying to think about my testing procedure ... I had a bunch of different stuff that I gave a good listen on the HR824s at uni, so I knew what a more expensive set sounded like. Then I set up the M1As, the 8.2As, the Media Desk 2.1 set, the M-Audio SP5s (or whatever they're called), Yamaha NS3 (I think?) and the Genelec 8030As (I think).

Me and two of the guys in Sound Control worked our way through the tester tracks whilst another guy swapped over the sets for us. The Genelecs were subjectively the best by a distance, but two of us put the M1As second, and the guy who was selling me the M1As had them pegged with the M-Audios when we put them with a Genelec sub.

The Blue Sky set (£500, so theoretically should be significantly better) were just rubbish ... poor imaging and no detail ... a lifeless sound. But this was in a big open room - in a smaller room the Media Desk may have come into their own a little (as they're designed for home studio use).

So there you have it ... evidence that either the whole world is mad ... or it's me. :)

hmmm

just thought id let you guys know that i sent the deepwater fellow money for a pair of these on dec 5th and have yet to recieve them. he contacted me saying he revieve my cash and they were going out, then i got an email reply saying he was out of stock, then i got a reply saying he lost my address. that was a while ago and he has since stop replying to my emails all together it seems. seems shady to me.

Nice to know this considering I was trying to get a hold of to purchase some.

hmmmm... well that sucks, mr. rich.

Here's my opinion on some of the speakers. If you are going M-audio, I would recommend BX5's + sub. I have the BX8's, but I wish I had done the 5's and sub. Would probably help hear the lows more than the BX8's alone.
With the M1A1's, I think the porting makes the room very important. I had to mix on them at school in a long but very narrow room, and it was very difficult.
That's all I know.

My replies to your emails keep bouncing back. I'll happly refund your money. Everyone on here who has ordered from has gotten their monitors and I've even shipped replacements for some that have been damaged in shipping and a few warranty replacements.

Nothing Shady I promise.

If you PM me your address I'll 2nd day air you a refund check tomorrow morning.

I am confused Deepwater, why were they never shipped to him in the first place?

I think Deepwater doesn't ship them himself; he tells Wharfedale's USA branch to do it directly. So he wouldn't necessarily know when they've been shipped. That would be my guess.

I'm still waiting on mine and got nervous after a week of no contact, but deepwater contacted me again and I'm reasonably confident. If they're not here in a week or two, you can bet I'll start raising a stink around here. For now I'd say he seems trustworthy, especially with the number of people here who have gone through him. It sounds like he's a little overloaded with orders though.

Dealer price on a pair of 8.2A's is (I believe) about $200 USD. I have a heck of a time wrapping my head around how they can possibly afford half-decent drivers, a cab, and an amp for $100 a speaker... plus R&D, labour, and a little profit. $50 in parts? If these are any good at all they must have gotten REALLY lucky stumbling upon a cheap configuration that works. We'll see though. I'm planning on doing a pretty extensive review and comparison to YSM1P's once mine arrive.

DEEP WATER could you send me information on a 8.2 active pair and shipping to New York

I've been having some problems with my Sales rep not forwarding my orders to Wharfedale on my last two orders so things have been taking longer. From now own I'm working direct with an in house sales rep at Wharfedale

I sent Deep some money via paypal. He sent me tracking numbers 2 or 3 days later. I can easily track my shipment on fedex.com. He's been real cool. I will post a complete A/B comparison of the W's compared to my alesis mk2 monitor 1 actives after saturday (after they arrive). Deep's been cool so far to me. Nothing shady.

My Warfies took longer to get here than expected, partly because FedEx delivered them to the wrong house. This is the second time FedEx has screwed up. The last time was plane tickets.

Otherwise, things went smooth and they arrived in mint condition. Thanks again, deep.

anyone having problems with the led lights? one of them on mine flickers and changes brightness constantly..it's becoming really distracting.

The ones on mine are so bright they reflect off my glasses and hurt my old man eyes. So I covered them with electricians tape.

heard the 8.2A today and was impressed but just want to get the genelec 8030a, after hearing them i was blown away how such a small monitor has such a huge sound.......but the wharfedale's for the price were impressive, i see why so many people have bought them here!
