Wat Mic Is Best For Acoustic Guitar>> Under 100 ?

The Oktava MC012 can be had for $75 at GC these days, and I like it a little better than the 603. It's a little less grating in the high end on my guitar.

I bought a couple of MXL603Ss a couple of weekends ago. I haven't definitively proven it yet, but I suspect I may have a problem with one of them - I'm getting some random crackling in one channel using the same leads and pre where I've not had it before, so the mic is the suspect at this stage. I hope it's not, because they're not exactly easy to get in Australia and I have about nil chance of getting it exchanged as it was bought at a warehouse sale direct from the distributor, who I may have trouble tracking down.

Why? He didn't say that he wanted a good stage mic. He came to the homerecording board because he wants a good mic for recording. With this in mind, the 603 is the clear winner over the 57. I think the MC012 is the winner over the 603 myself, but I suspect that maybe it just fits my guitar a little better than the 603.
 
My acoustic (Taylor Big Baby) is pretty bright sounding with not a lot of bass. When I mic'd it with a 603S it sounded kind of metallic and bad. I found using an SP B1 made it sound much more balanced. So I guess it depends on your guitar. People who like the 603S probably have more even-sounding (and expensive) guitars, but on my guitar it sounded tinny. I personally like the B1 and ECM8000.

Good point; if its use is limited to recording, I'll agree with you in a heartbeat. I figure that once you have a mic, you'll find it useful for music beyond what you were initially thinking of, and I like the SM57's versatility.

That is good and often overlooked point. It's also the reason I think the C1000 sucks on most acoustics. The strings can make a difference as well. Soon I'll be taking the John Pearse Phospher Bronze off my Webber and putting Elixer Nanos back on. The phosphers are too damn bright, and the B string has that metalic ring that sounds awful recorded.
 
I've had great success using the Oktava MK012's in a stereo pair for micing my Martin HD28 w/ the John Pearse Phosphor Bronze stings. I spent some time at my local GC though making sure I got as close to a matched pair as possible.

The MK012's come with the -10db pad which could be useful for you, and you can indeed find both omni and hyper capsules for them.
 
I posted elsewhere in this thread that I'd bought two MXL603s and had a concern that one of them was faulty - I now believe the problem lay elsewhere in the signal chain, no probs with the mics themselves, so I retract my earlier aspersion with apologies to the good folk at Marshall!
 
no pickups?

I take it that all you folks recommending mikes on guitars (for stage) have not found the pickup combo you like? Or is it that you're as neurotic as I and will not drill a hole in your guitar to accomodate a jack? This is a serious question.
