57 on top and i5 on bottom. really like the results there, but i think everyones right, both great mics and its just a taste issue in my opinion. the 57 is always a go to mic, but i think the i5 is becoming one for me!:)

I think it TOTALLY depends on your source. My snare drum sounds like CRAP (it probably sounds like crap anyway) with an i5, but a 57 tends to capture more of this specific snares favorable character.

i5 versus SM57

As part of my degree I did experiments investigating exactly this and after a long time I found........not that much difference, quality wise at least. It is true that they sound completely different but that depends on what you prefer, just personal taste. My personal taste was for the i5, however, I seem to find that when the "standard" microphone comes up against an Audix then I prefer the Audix but that's just me. For example, I would choose a D6 over the AKG D112 when close micing a kick drum. The only way to truly decide between them is just to rent/borrow/find one of each, try them out and see which one you prefer.

If you have the money get both and then if you're ever in the situation where you need the "sound" that the other mic gives then you're sorted, but life is rarely that kind.

My personal taste - the i5 - you'll just have to try both for yourself.

Let's see.....which mic is better? The i5 or the SM57??

My answer is Ford. Hands down.

:D:D:D:D

Sm57 all the way for me. . .But there are certainly many other good mics out there that will do similar things. It's just (like everyone else said) a matter of personal preference.

I have used both and gotten good results with both. I agree with a previous poster, that the i5 seems to handle rear rejection a little better. Other than that, it's about a tie. I prefer the MD-421II :p

Has to be the SM57 as the best microphone!
For you don't see two i5s up on the podium when the President is giving a speech now do you?

I think they just put that up in front of the president because they're not bothered to use something else. I doubt they're testing other mics to see which one he sounds better on :D

True president after president has been set up the same way with 57s.
But when it come to public speaking and I have to provide sound reinforcement I'll put out as many 57s that are needed (sometimes as many as eight in a large panel debate) with stellar results.
You wouldn't think it but but they sound great and perform great in this application.
The off axis response is incredible you don't have to have the dam microphone right up to the speaker mouth as you do with many other microphones.
With no feedback even if the 57 is two feet away from the person I'm able to raise the volume up so all in the house can hear the person just fine.

Yeah it is a fantastic mic, no doubt about that. I think the judges use it on American Idol too ?

If you looked at the freq curves of sm57 and I-5 you will see that the SM57
actually has more low freq range than the 57, and it has more high end clarity as well. But if I roll off the high some I can get it to sound close to
a 57 only more bottom (for close guitar cab mic'ing) and when I use it on a snare it has more pop on the top end. I find I can do more with it than a 57. I also use D6, and D2 from Audix and used
a condenser for some overheads that was a nice sounding mic also. I think it was an ADX51.

:laughings::laughings::laughings:Really? I have no TV in my house. I have 7 children and I try to have there mind not melt like ice cream on a summers day watching the boob tube.
