If you were to get a couple of mics for micing drums yet versitile for other apps, what would it be, the new(er) Audix I-5 or stick with the good old SM57? And if anyone could care to elaborate that would be swell, because I don't know much about there differences. Still learning, thanks

The I-5 is a nice mic does just a good of a job but gives a differant color. Its going to be one of those what do you like best and you want go wrong with eather. Audix does make some of the best vocal and drums (ie. OM5 and D series)

depends on what your application is. If it's snare, i would chose almost anything other than a 57.

Opinions: Everyone has one

....I like 57's for snare and big boobs on women. Some guys prefer butts.

There is no correct answer to the question.

I prefer the M201 on snare and I don't like big boobs, though I've got big hands I prefer the smaller boobies.

Butts are okay as well, unless they're big. :D

you should be shot for a shameless sir mix alot quote

No-one is gonna vote for that Audix cos they haven't used it.

There are others I would look at in that price range anyway, without stepping up the price to what Han recommended.

dalziel. for drums , the best drum sound i ever heard was a pair of crown pzm's over the kit in xy, with kik and snare triggered to a sampler.
but prolly the room had something to do with it as well.
also vgood drum tuning.
crown pzm's are expensive but can be used in lots of applications.
peace.

why has no one used it? ive heard from some people who said they tried it micing a snare, and said it was every bit as good as the 57s, i think that was just because they wanted a change though. im not too sure...

how much for each crown pzm, and what major online music store would have it? altough, i dont really want to sample such a great snare and bass drum i invested in. its just wastefull aint it?

jdalziel - the sm57 is one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) selling mics of all time. Everyone's used them ... so your poll is gonna come out way in favour of the Shure because so few people have used the Audix.

It's the reason you still see so many sm58s in live venues - the engineer will tell you, "It's the industry standard" but really they've never tried any of the new standards.

The i5 sounds NOTHING like a SM57. I own one. It's got huge flabby bass, plasticky highs, kinda sucked in the upper mids. In other words....useless.

We got mic forum to discuss mics!!!!!

Here we better talk about boobs and butts... :p :D

i dnt understand, y have an SM57 in the competition when an sm57 beta is better....???

If you can't get a snare to sound good with an sm57, it's not the mic's fault:D

Also, there is nothing better about a beta 57 than an sm57. Just different.

The 57 is the industry standard for many reasons. It is however often "overused" because thats what people have been taught to use. That does not make it any less usefull though.

Well, this thread is a little old....but, I'd opt for a 57 (matter of fact I've opted for a few of them). I've never had a problem with a 57 on a snare nor have I ever had a problem with a 57 on a guitar amp. Just have to experiment and get the results you want. Xstatic hit it on the head (no pun intended) about the 57/snare combo.

IMO, the reason that many ppl HATE sm57's is because, especially on drums, it reproduces the sound pretty faithfully. Sure, there is a little mids added, but wat you hear is what ur going to get. If you have shitty drums or cant tune, ur gona HATE the sm57. Its kinda like my Titleist 905 golf driver. It dosnt change the way you hit it. It is a reletivly forgiving driver, but it is gona do what you do. If you swing badly, its gona be a shit shot!

BTW, I LOVE sm57's. On my drums ans the way that i tune them, the snare always fits in the mix nicly wen i use one. Unfortunatley, my sm57 is not im my hands right now (long story, a friend has it, KINDA!), so I either dont use a snare mic of a cheap Digital Reference dynamic mic. SOO BAD!
