vocal booth option????

Also get to a fabric store and buy about ten yards of craft felt, your choice of color. Wrap two inch thick panels of fiberglass with the fabric and hang on the walls, you should be able to get about a dozen.

This will get you better performance, both in terms of isolation and absorbtion than anything discussed up to this point. It will be close to your budget too.

Well 'portability' is a relative term. True portability (fold it up between sessions) and even moderate isolation are incompatible. What a lot of people mwan when they say 'portable' is 'dismantle it and take it with me when I move to a new apartment'. Because my Idea used angle brackets it could meet this level of portability.

Yeah, for what I do, I need to be able to fold it up and put it away after each session and that's why what I made works great. If you are in a similar situation where you can't just have a big ass room built in your room, try doing what I did for like $70.
 
anybody mention cloth covered fiberglass???

Something about singing in a tiny booth with fiberglass insulation does not sound like the best idea for my lungs and vocal chords. I worked in insulation for like 6 or 7 months and we always wore ventilation masks. I know it'd covered by fabric, but still... I don't know... It's not something I'd like to gamble with.

I think Strave's solution is an excellent one. I built much the same thing using PVC pipe as the frame. It's NOT an isolation booth, but it does completely knock out unwanted weird reflections. Just add reverb later on to taste.

My PVC version cost under $100. Works like a charm.

yeah. i wouldn't use it for a booth, just to treat the mixing environment... which i thought was one goal for you.
