VF80 Play button COLLAPSED!!!!!

Anyone had this happen??? The button suddenly wouuldn't perform the desired function, and I had to push it firmly to get it to play/record. It finally just collapsed, and I nearly followed along. I am in the middle of 2 very important projects right now, and I am devistated. I know I can send it in, but it takes 3-4 weeks for repair...blah..blah...blah....I can still play/record, but I can barely reach the button, because its down so far....I am pissed.....

had one cave in on my mr8, lucky it was the third day i had it and mf replaced it, can you save your files to computer to keep them safe till you get it back?
 
I hear you, my button is getting more and more difficult to push, and it feels like it is about to cave!
 
Definitely sounds like an issue that Fostex should address since so many people are having problems with them. My buttons on the MR8 are still holding up well, but I may not use mine as much as other people do.
 
Pitch Button

I can relate- My pitch button was knocked in by a falling microphone, on the third day I got it, I now use an altered pencil stub when I need the pitch function... a major pain but there is no way I can go without the machine for 3-4 weeks (minimal).... I am tempted to try and fabricate some sort of longer button to attach somehow to the actual button on the board, the outer button is just a pad... they wear out quite quickly actually, the only drawback thus far..... Also I heard FYI be really careful that the contrast knob for the LED doesn't get hit too hard, or else the entire display will go out, and it's like 300 bucks to fix.....
 
I guess I am surprised that with such a durable machine, that the play button would have problems....I've actually thought about buying another unit, and pulling my burner from the old one, just to keep moving on my projects, but then again, is this gonna happen again after 2 years???? Should I be looking at another brand, that hasnt had these problems??

The "transport" buttons on the VF80 are probably the only weaker spot on an otherwise extremely solid product. One thing to consider though is that it doesn't take too much pressure to activate the Rec/Play functions. I'd just be extra careful when you get the machine back. I don't believe there's a more solid operating system than the VF80/160 out there. No need to optimise, defrag, etc. Still, on the VF80, it'd be a little better if more support structure was built under the Rec/Play buttons...

Perhaps the good side is, if you send it in to Fostex, they can make sure it's all up to spec, and load in any newer software upgrades?
 
Yup. I was starting to have the same problem with my vf08
before I sold it. I'd push on the buttons and nothing,
somtimes they would work and somtimes they wouldn't.
For mine it was the play button and the set up button.
Annoying for sure.

It seems the moral of this thread is, be careful with fostex products for three (3) days after recieving.

play button

mine quit working but i don't know what you mean by "collapsed" , anyway, I sprayed some P.B. Blaster(it's like WD-40 but stronger and with a lubricant) in there and it started working again. also, a lubricated electronic spray like you would spray in your guitar input would probly work. Cheaper and easier than sending it off and it is still working after several months.

p. s. Go ahead and spend the $200 and get a Tascam US-122 and go 24 bit man. the VF80 sucks major ASS!!!!

sounds like your dont have much experience,

collapsed, to cave in, fall through, indent....

by the way pb plasted has chemicals that will destroy many types of plastic, the button pads are encased nodes, nothing to lubricate.....
 
I don't claim to know what P.B. Blaster is, but anything that is like WD40 is not going near my stuff!!!!

i use it to get bolts loose on a motor im rebuilding, after you spray it, it really desloves rust, but it warns right on the can not to get it on gaskets, or any kind of plastic....dohoooo
 
I'd have to say that fostex has serious issues with their buttons...

I just noticed last night that my play button (MR8) takes a considerable amount of extra force to activate than it used to, and more than any of the other buttons...

I'll be treading as lightly as I can on them from now on...
