Is it possible to get a matched pair of AT 2020 mics in the UK, I'm wanting to use them as drum overheads. If you can't suggest anything better than two AT 2020. Do they really need to be matched anyway, cause they're relatively crap mics anyway?

:D

Naiant

Im not sure, but Naiant may ship overseas. Ive really liked the X-Q's ive used. I havnt actually used them as overheads... but ive heard recordings of them and they sound really great for the tiny price. Actually right now im deciding if I want to order a pair of the X-Q's or X-M's for overheads, but I've had no expierence with the X-M's, and they more expensive (still cheaper than the AT2020 though).

Anyway, its worth a check- Naiant's are great for the price.

I've heard the naiants vary a great deal from mic to mic of the same model, if that's true, due to the fact of not being able to demo mics I'd rather prefer go with something more consistent. I know the naiants are a popular choice for budget mics & I was going to buy some off of HR member pandamonk but I went through a few recordings that were made with them & I wasn't too impressed.

AFAIK, Audio-Technica doesn't match mics. The claim is that they're sufficiently consistent that it isn't useful to do so. (I'm not passing judgment by saying that.)

For drum overheads, I'd suggest a pair of Oktava MK-012 mics, but I'm not sure what the prices look like over there on that side of the pond.

Really, you weren't impressed? What recordings? Mine? Well mine are pretty shit! You can come demo these if you want? I think they're pretty good, especially for the price. I use my MSH2s for drum overheads, and it sounds like you're in the room.

X-Qs aren't great for overheads. Their limit is 108dB!

I use the MSH2s, but they also sell X-Ts which are an upgrade of the MSH2Ts. I got flat response ones, before they were discontinued, and a pair of tailored response. I would use the flats for overheads, but i need the money, and they sell for more than MSH2s(I bought in bulk from Jon to sell in the UK).

aw naw

another thread started & I've offended someone already  and it had to be a fellow scot :o;)

pandamonk, in truth I didn't download your audio, I don't download from my pc as I use mobile internet (it costs £££!!!) & while I was talking to you about buying the naiants I was at home. I went specially to the library for the internet and from there to the naiant website & downloaded all the samples & everything sounded dead as a donkey shot in the head with a rpg to me. It may just be my ear, or mabye even both my ears, who nose?

PS I'll swap you the mapex snare for the Naiants :p

about those naiants...

I too am getting some overheads, and if i had more $, i would go w/ the oktava MK- 012's- the recordings ive heard w/ those have sounded more full than others ive checked out.

so not X-Q's? Have you had experience wit X-M's, or could you offer any comparison between those and the X-T's for overheads purposes?

I had that thought, but you said it sounds shit, and i could get a brand new mapex snare for the price of those mics, so hmm, we could do a deal. What type of mapex snare is it again? and what colour?

Yeah but the mapex snare sounds like shit too!! :D

It's a VX 12" x 5" in Wax Aqua-Marine

To be honest, I'm not going to sell it on ebay because the people that would be interested in it would be beginners. The drum in it's current state IMO is not tunable. Which wouldn't be a nice thing to give a beginner!! The batter hoop is able to be tuned, the reso is not due to the hoop being uneven along the snare openings. It would need new snare wires as well as a new hoop. It would probably sound ok after all that, but are you not better just buying one without going through all that hassle? I know - I'm not a good business man but hey, I'm honest. Once I have completed a new kit & the mapex kit is left there standing unused I'll probably tune it to my best ability & sell the whole god damn thing!!

How's about the snare + £15 for two MSH2s?

Ok, but I've still to recieve the acrolite. If the acrolite turns out ok i'll go through with the swap. I am needing mics & if they're not all that great I can at least use them for some lofi experiments. The acrolite may take a week or two to arrive, I'll contact you then. ;)

Ok, look forward to it. The mics are pretty decent imo! I've had experience with a few decent mics(at college) and a couple budget(at home), and i don't remember getting a better sound. Ok, with much more expensive mics, you might, but not at budget level, i don't think.

which college did you go to? I while back I completed a Music & audio tech. hnc at ayr college.

2004 I think, the course changed just after I completed my year so it meant that I would have had to continue the HND straight after or not at all. I wanted a year out. I remember being told at the interview I would be working with Analogue & digital systems but cubase, pro tools, and an O2R is all I remember working with so i was kind of annoyed as analogue was what i was mainly interested in

did you get to mix for battle of the bands for live sound? :D

I got to mix a lot of things. Emm i finished the HND last year, so i must've started in 2005. Just missed u mate. You could've done the HND until 2006. The HNC changed when i was doing the HND. It had went almost completely protools when i was there. Paddy went protools mad! We had the O2R96, and 2 Control24s. For live we used a DM1000 and they bought an Allen & Health but i was ill a lot of the year so never really got to use it.

They had a big analogue desk, but no-one ever used it haha.

The Lecturers that we there when i was there was: Patrick, Michael, Ian(wi his dreds), John, Mhairi, Yvonne, Ewan(Great Laugh), was that it... Ohh and Paul Mcgeechan(Awesome), and another Paul guy, but they joined late. You get any of these

They never had any acoustic treatment which always annoyed me. I kept saying to them, but they didn't listen until Paul Mcgeechan arrived and told them the same thing. Then he wanted to cover the place in MetroFusers, so i told him about realtraps. He got dead interested, but nothing got done while i was there though.

hah, big ewan yeah he was great, had him for all things music business. Patrick was in charge of my year, michael was cool & I had ian aswell. Also Vharri, (spl err) but you probably wouldn't have had her for the HND, I think she really had a thing for me aswell  :D
