I have the L20 and am running out of channels already.. typical jam session I have 2 electric gtrs, a bass, I like to leave 1 track open for overdubs later (lead or another rythm), then there could be 10 drum mics (snare, kick in and out, four toms, hats, ride and a pair of overheads.. this can certainly be reduced if necessary, like nix the hat and ride and only use overheads for all cymbals, or only mic inside the kick and so on but I have them all set up for when I record my drums on my own).. then we could have from 2 to 4 vocals. I don't want to use any mics in 17/18 or 19/20 since we may use a stereo pair for some mp3 backing track or keyboards.
I also have been wanting a smaller Livetrak for when we jam elsewhere.. my L20 is always plugged in and stationary so I'm not gonna lug it out of the basement, but I figured the L12 I could record 3 or 4 vocals and then have the other 4-5 channels to get the amps and drums with less mics.. maybe just have a few around the room for that. So it's already a good idea to have a 2nd albeit smaller Zoom digital mixer/recorder. But back at my place, the behemoth I've been considering, if it can be done without causing some crazy loop or feedback system.. if I could say plug all the vocals or four vocals and maybe a few gtrs and bass.. have a pair of monitors (or the mains?) patched into a pair of inputs on the L20.. I'd have to make sure they're all gain staged fairly well and EQ'd ok, before sending that to the L20.. the record all that. I'm fairly sure that in itself would work.
But here's the question.. say I want to record whatever I've got going into the L12 while I'm recording on the L20.. and in order to be able to do some overdubs on the L12 later, I want the main mix from the L20 to come into the L12 but not go back out back to the L20.. so I either have that L20 input muted, or send the channels from the L12 over to the 20 using a pair of monitors and set it so only the original tracks from the L12 go over.. meanwhile on the L20, if I can have only the tracks there (not the ones sent over by the L12) set to go to the L12 via a pair of monitor channels that don't send the L12 input back.. does any of that make sense and seem feasible? I plan on testing the theory out soon when I can find the time.. I know its ok for sure if it's just one way.. one mixer sending a bunch of tracks mixed down to a stereo pair and over to the other mixer.. just not sure if it would let me do some back and forthing with it all. To test it out at the moment I only have an analog mixer from the past.. and even if it does't work, I could still really use the L12 to use for when I'm recording at one of the other other guy's places.
