I actually think tab is a better system for notating guitar parts than standard sheet music.

You certainly shouldn't be ashamed of using tab.

Yeah, I think I could have worded that better! :D I'm not ashamed of using tab; it is a great tool. All I'm saying is that when people start out with using tabs, they most likely never learn what notes they are playing, and, in general, musicianship suffers. I just think not enough guitar players these days have a solid base in music theory and things like that.

But I suppose that is just my take on things. Whatever you use that gets the job done! The result is the same: music! (hopefully :p )

Tab is brilliant for learning to play tunes that you want to learn. The only thing tab doesn't depict is the note values, however when learning from tab and playing along to the tune you can pick that up!

I usually think of it as thin string - high tone - high on the tab.

Depending on how many other instruments you're playing with, if you get good at tuning by ear, that can be just about as good as using a tuner.

If you get good at tuning by ear, it is infinatly better than using a tuner, but the reasons are a bit beyond the scope of this thread.

Needless to say, I use a tuning fork and my ear, and I tune to a chord. I would advise you to do the same. If you want to see some of my reasoning, use the search button.
