speaking of dBees... it gives me headache
I've found THIS as basic blah.
Now I know that Rocket Launching is 180dB SPL :D
I wonder how would we record without Alex Bell.

Here is what I believe should be the case, and please crit me if I'm wrong. According to the Mackie manual, and I believe this to be true in my limited experience, start with the source of the music, get as pure a signal as you can through playing to miking to input channels (board pre or outboard). Get the purest signal you can to the board, through the board, out to the hard disk, MSR tape machine in this case. Now yes there are two output options per channel on the 24.8, one is channel direct out, the other is to send to the triple 8 buss section. The latter has the pad option, the prior does not. Maybe I am just being limited by my recorder. Guess I can buss if that is the only option to pad the signal, and it seems like it is. Just seems to me like one more "burearcratic branch" to go through before getting the solution to the final storing destination. Of course it is coming back through a shitload of bureaucracy, so if that is what it takes, then no love lost. Just to understand, and I'll call Mackie if not, there is no db control over direct outs, only if you send to the 8 buss?

first of I don't see how you are being 'limited' by your recorder? :) I really think you are kind of going "crazy" with no reason...heh heh ...Say, your recorder is works 'correctly', meaning that there's no issues with the machine...then nothing really going wrong in your case...well, unless I miss something completely.
Direct outs: - the fader is the control. What's in the channel after the fader (or what ever ...see the mixer's I/O channel Architecture to make sure) - is what you get "in" dir.out of that channel.
Here's what you have (in general)... as recording session set-up... I mean, when you'll get your bridge. Whether you use subgroups or chnl's dir.outs or combination of both to send signal(s) to MSR, you'll connect MSR's outputs with tape/return(s) of the board (or mixB), set tape returns channels' operating level to match your recorder (-10dBV ...push the switch down). Then you switch the bridge to TAPE ...so it 'sees' what's coming into tape returns. In this setup your bridge meters should act the same way as your MSR meters. So , - as you move the fader of a channel - you adjust record level on your recorder for the track, which is assigned (connected with) to that channel and you see on your bridge what actually "is happening" on your recorder. Now, again, this is if your really want to set it up this way...'cos you don't have to. ...or say, you don't really need to do this (monitoring your recording on your desk..that is, during recording session).
well, I don't know if I miss something here.... that's the way I understand this whole thing :p
