Hi guys,

Quick question. I recorded some drums on track 1 and guitar on track two on a Tascam 38. During overdub I could hear the drums to track the guitar. But when I played it back on a different tascam 38, track 1 did'nt play. The vu meter didn't register sound either. I put it back on a the 38 I recorded with and the drums were there. Is this a head alignment issue?

I should note

that track two came out loud and clear on both decks!

Could be an alignment problem, but you say track two is fine... Perhaps channel one is simply not functioning on the second 38. It happens. You could take it apart and check out the board for channel 1.

How loud was the bleed-through of drums to the guitar [2nd track]? Some bleed is normal but it gets worse as you push the meters way into the red, especially for stuff like drums and on 'narrower' track machines, without dbx.

Also, avieth is right that the 2nd machine may not have a functioning 1st channel. Don't worry about the 2nd machine for now.

boy I am red. . . .

it turned out to be a jack and patch bay problem. My new question is why doesn't the VU function when the jack isn't working?

The bad jack is probably shorting out the channel. If you run into this again, you could take the tape, FF it onto the take up reel then place the take up reel in the supply position and track 1 would show up on track 8 playing backwards. :D
