Naw, I won't go there.;)

ya' know........................

I like strange stuff...........................

And this isn't too strange for me.........................

There are things I really like that are even stranger...................

........................................................................BUT...........................

this one seems very mechanical to me. I mean, just because a piece isn't traditional in it's note and chord structure and even time doesn't mean it can't have a feeling to it and I've heard other stuff of yours that did evoke a feeling or even a groove albiet, not a 4/4 groove. :D This one though, sounds like a 'puter programed to produce a series of notes with no human action at all.

Just my reaction........I didn't really find it discordant though. It was kind of a pleasing note interaction, just too mechanical.

Why did they do that?

It's cool I guess. Seems like a better way to make music in a way, no perfecting or planing needed.

Fuggin freak. :)

Listening for the fourth time. No, fifth time, theres something in there that I like but its so its so off center I cant figure out what it is. sixth time.

GOT It

reminds me of the soundtrack on a entomology film from the late 50s. Yeah, thats it, those busy little ants all working feverously in all directions to build more ant stuff!:D :D

Peace
Bill

"I'm gonna have to listen to this a few more times to check for a tonal center......melodic developement........harmonic continuity.............emotional content........hold on... NOPE!"

flat-9: maybe if you jettisoned all those categories, the tune would stand a better chance of actually getting heard by whatever it is in you that likes music. :D I'm including emotional content in my comment, too - music doesn't have an emotional content; people have emotional content, and music triggers it. If you perceived no emotional content in this song, all that says is that it didn't trigger anything in you.

I like the doc's stuff cuz I've been listening to it for years. It doesn't sound unusual any more, it sounds familiar. In fact, if I was looking for something to criticize in this tune, it wouldn't be the tune itself as much as the fact that it sounds very much like other stuff he's done in the past. But you know, that's true of most people who post here - listen to stuff by Crawdad, Sluice, Chrisharris, BSabbath - excellent, interesting high quality stuff, but you can recognize who's doing it straight off because of a signature sound kind of thing. (Hmmm...this is giving me an idea for a new clinic challenge...)

Anyway, give this tune some time. Listen to it on two more occasions - once in a week, and once in two weeks when you've been drinking or something. When you're familiar with it, you won't need cluing in any more - you'll understand it. Maybe even like it.

I'd be up shit creek if I needed some planing! I don't even own a Sears planer! :) (I used to have two- including one nice one)

The "perfecting" is done from a dimensional perspective different from that which is evident from the listener's reference plane.

dobro- don't sweat the characterizations made from such a perspective. Those in search of "tonal center" or "harmonic continuity" would do better to either, as you suggested, scrap the categories or listen to more popular music.

Elton John put it into his "Get Back Honky Cat" tune.

"Like trying to drink whisky from a bottle of wine"

I'm with Lt. Bob....except I like mechanical. It just needs better sounds...(suddenly feels the urge to play Civilization Phase III by Zappa)

And how on earth can you make an all digital effort like this sound that bad? :D Dropouts? Did you mix to tape for 'warmth' or something? Jeez!

:D

Actually I liked the sounds doc uses in this one. Another anti-hit by the doc!

Flat 9 - Dude, I know EXACTLY how you feel, lol...my first post in one of Doc's threads was a herculean attempt to not offend, lol...but like Dobro said, once you sort of know what to expect, then it's just interesting stuff.

I haven't seen him around here lately, but Jamal Buchet's first post in one of Doc's threads was something like...

"Sounds like your cat is just walking across the piano"...

...to which Doc very candidly replied that THAT may have actually occurred, lol...which is probably when I decided that it's okay to not "get it" sometimes.

I don't over-analyze this stuff either... regardless of what he may have had in mind when he was composing, it just doesn't make sense to try to understand it, lol. I think of it kind of like those Avante Garde film clips where there's just a blistering fast succession of unrelated still shots (mostly black and white) with some color shots thrown in for dynamics...they usually have names like "Foraging For Treadlines" or something...they don't last very long usually, or you'd overload and just block it out, but while it's happening, it's interesting.

Why am I trying to win converts for you, doc? You leftist commie HazMat freak? :D :D

Dropouts? Where? Or I should ask, "When?"

I'll quit posting in your thread now.

Perhaps it's the mp3 encoding....did you check the mp3 yourself? Sounds like it lost a few bits... ;)

Great, but too short. Capt. Beefheart, where are you! Seriously, this is very wierd and very good and I only wish there were more of it.

Thanks- Most people can only endure short bursts of this musical form until they have been assimilated!

Good One Chris! Right after the accapella section! :D

On three systems! Just give me the time into the tune where the problems occur. TIA!

Too short,

This tune reminds me of a busy highway, with cars stoping and going, very quickly, and in perfect time.

This one sounds very happy to me.

Great work, great recording!!

Nice. It's no D09d1, though it's definitely reminiscent :D. I love the rhythmic interplay, as usual, but I really wish you'd experiment with some different module sounds. There's a definite signature with the patches you choose, but personally I wanna hear what you'd do with some totally different textures.

On the quality side, this recording isn't quite up to the same level as that opening piece from the CD. But I don't hear the glitches that other people are picking up, so I wonder if it's a player issue. I'm using Winamp 2.666, FWIW.

I'm working on a totally spontaneous creation as I type, but my server is temperamental. They may be up or not tonight or tomorrow. I'll post the upgrade path!

The Upgrade is 2 min something. Long Enough!!!

that's bullshit... throw some notes up in the air and see where they land. I don't need a drink for that.

flat9 made some reasonable comments and you give him some speach like 'wake up and you'll understand chaos'....:D

of course this "music" has a style. randomness in itself is a style then too. But like said earlier...the mechanicalness of this shows [to me]that anyone with access to a sequencer for the first time can come up with results just as gratifying. Now...maybe if this was constructed of loops and samples that were altered to protect the innocent.

:D :D
