Sounds good dude.

That's one thing that drives me nuts about Orange - they make great amps and then they put large chunks of plastic right in front of the speaker - as opposed to off to the side like virtually everyone else. I took them off my Orange rocker verb 50 combo. Looks like you mic'd around it.

Thanks man! Yeah that fucking badge is a bitch but luckily its dead center of the speaker so not much of a problem for me. Actually turns out to be a good guide for me to know where I like the mic.

I feel like someone beat me up .....

Funnily enough, I feel like some beat me up too. Epic weekend though and I clearly have a lot of Tone Thread to catch up on!

Greg, what can you tell me about a band called Face To Face? I was listening to them in my mates car on the way home earlier. They're pretty good. First new thing I've heard in ages that I've wanted a copy of.

I don't know, I'm not a fan. They're like mild bro-punk. Lol.

Haha, fair enough. I thought they sounded pretty good. Like slightly more pissed off than normal Bad Religion

Uh, I don't think they're pissed off about anything. Maybe because Hot Topic ran out of fingerless gloves or something like that. :D

Yeah but how'd it go?
went like all my gigs go ....... people liked me and I got paid ...... the getting paid is the important part ....
... the 'people liking you thing' gets you back for another check.

actually, I'm having significant hand problems ..... I'm starting to have trouble holding a pick .... and gripping the pick the tight way you do to get pinch harmonics makes my right hand cramp and drop the pick.
That's kinda a drag ...... but a couple shots works better than any pain med so as long as they sell booze I'll get by. .... until my liver gives out anyway.
:D

Lol. I used to know a guy that had nerve damage in his hand but he still played guitar. He couldn't hold a normal pick very well, so he used one of those thumb picks but still kind of held it like a regular pick. Worked good for him. Maybe you could try that?

He did die though, so there's that.

hahahahahaha ..... there IS always that. ..... OMG that's funny!
:laughings:

ummmmm ..... I'm not sure what I'm gonna do although the thumbpick's not a bad idea .... hadn't thought of that so thanks ..... but I also have the pain thing to figure out ...... to this point when I've had spells of hand pain, I'd just get all serious with my hands and wear braces at night .... use a paraffin tank for heat treatment ..... various smelly cremes .... etc. That always solved the problem mostly which is good enough.
I will do all that, of course ...... but this seems to feel different this time ..... but I could also be senile and paranoid about it.

So I hope it does like before ..... but it takes a couple weeks and the bastards hurt like hell in the meantime.
I'm a big string bender and that sideways movement of the fingers sends a jolt of pain .... the kind that makes you jump ..... lol, it's really distracting!

I have certainly spent some time thinking about this ...... I HAVE to play ...... not just for money but because playing defines me as a person ....... I played my first gigs 53 years ago when I was 12 ...... I'm on my first record when I was 12 ..... and now it's been a daily thing, either gigging or practicing/recording for 47 years since I went full-time in '69.
My wife tells people 'Steve IS music' and I am.
And despite the struggles recently to find my muse, I am still obsessed by it .... you know what I'll do after a lot of gigs? ..... go sit-in with someone somewhere. :laughings: insanity!
It's THE thing I was born for and I'm truly unsure what would happen if I ever couldn't play.

So I have looked into all the possible treatments and have planned out an escalating litany of things I will do up to and including consulting with my high school bud and fellow musician who became a well regarded specialist with hand surgery.

I'm not there yet ..... hopefully I won't get there ever ..... but I'm prepared ....... have I told you I HAVE to play?
I do.

:)

Here's a Seek and Destroy clip with the JCM 800.

For me, I like this better than the Splawn clips. But admittedly I'm just a sucker for this amp's sound. I like the tighter brighter grind in this amp.

So what I did was set it the same as the Splawn. All EQ controls at noon. Same mic, speaker, mic position. Nothing moved from the last clips. The only difference is the amp. The 800 doesn't have anywhere near the gain the Splawn has, so I dimed the gain and pushed the front end with a Tube Screamer set as a clean boost just to get it in the ballpark.

Gibson Les Paul Traditional - Burstbucker 3 bridge pickup
Marshall JCM 800 2203
All EQ and presence at 12:00
Preamp vol - 10
Master vol - 5
Tube Screamer clean boost
Marshall 1960A 4x12 - Celestion Greenbacks
Shure SM57 on axis, on grill, just outside dustcap

SAD JCM800

Note - this was WAY louder than the Splawn at the same master vol settings. Goddamn this amp is loud.
No EQ or FX in DAW

That sounds really thick. Bet that was loud as fuck in the room.

Haha, yeah I know. You have to play. I actually find your situation very fascinating and I often wonder what I'll be like if I get to your age. I admire the fact that you've made this your career and you just keep plowing through it. It's not my career but I can only hope that I'll still have the skills and desire to be able to play the way I play later in life. But there is fishing and football, so maybe I'll be okay. :D

Anyway, go to a doc and see what they say about your hand. Maybe it's something they can give you some sweet ass pills for. :D

Yeah it was pretty loud. I think watt-for-watt this JCM 800 is the loudest amp I have. Even louder than the Plexis. Or it at least seems louder. It's got so much balls and punch, but it's very focused about it. It really hits you hard. Very aggressive.

A super top notch jazz flautist in Oz, Don Burrows, had grief with his hands for the last 30 years and he tried all sorts of stuff but the thing that worked for him was soaking his hands in a tub of fairly hot water for 10 mins before playing. Pretty annoyingly inconvenient but it git him by.
The thumb pick is something I resort to every now & then when my finger & thumb won't grip hard enough - I also moved to a bigger pick with a textured grip area to assist. In the mid 90's I'd got so bad that I couldn't hold a cup of coffee without it slipping from my grip but things slowly improved. Now it's my left hand's turn!
Lt Bob, look into all the options as I'm sure you already have - be careful of the snake oil though - the pharmaceutical companies are relabelling aspirin etc as if it's specially treats specific symptoms & charge more for it.
A bassis in a VERY famous Oz band of the early 70's is reputed to have mashed his hand in a car accident and when told he wouldn't be able to do much with it had the hand bones set in the pick holding position & played on. Apocryphal no doubt but for a gigging musco he probably wouldn't have had much choice.

I am sort of unusual in that respect.
The vast majority of players my age I know don't love it anymore.
They arrive late .... take lots of breaks .... watch the clock all nite and quit early.
I arrive early ...... don't take breaks and play late.

I am blessed to still love what I do ..... not everyone can say that.
A friend recently told me he envied me because I ALWAYS knew what I wanted to do ..... no doubts .... no questioning .... it made life easy in a lot of ways except the money thing and even there I chose the musicians' path ..... girlfriends with money and/or a wife who earned enough to keep me solvent!
:D

well, Les Paul absolutely had a messed up arm/hand and had it set in a playing position so it may well be true.

And yeah, I'm aware of snake oil ..... I'm a super skeptic and have a fairly strong science background and I never post about this on FB so I won't have the usual suspects telling me that 15gms a day of Peruvian penis oil will fix my hands and make me irresistible to women.

I already am irresistible to women anyways!

Bob: Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your hand, don't let it go too long...If you think you might need to see a doc, please do so man...
