Wish I had the space for a cab like that! Might be an idea to build a cab into my amp shelf. Not sure the neighbours would approve though.

Greg,
my Marshall cabinet is a VS412 LEAD 4x12 8ohm.

These photos aren't my cab but same model etc. Mine's in rather better cosmetic condition.
Chipboard box!!!

Ah yeah. A Valvestate cab. They're not the worst, but they're smaller than 1960s and, as you've noticed, they're not the best wood. Swapping out those speakers wouldn't be a bad idea if you ever wanna improve it. Those G12L speakers are pretty light-duty, literally. The "L" means "light magnet". They flub out pretty bad when pushed with something serious....like your Superbass! Give credit to those speakers for not giving up on life under that monster Marshall head you have. Those cabs were designed to be paired with Valvestate heads, which have solid state power sections. But with a lower powered tube amp, those speakers can sound decent. That's just personal preference. Some people love them. They are pretty Greenback-ish when you're not pounding them with high wattage. I knew a guy that ran an AC30 through a VS cab as an extension cab, and it sounded not bad.

Greg, thanks. OK, I'll keep an eye out for speaker/s. Short list of what I ought to get if I replace one or more please.
JDOD,
That's the smallest of my cabs. I have a massive single cone 200 watt Etone box for bass and an almost twice as big 2 x 15 (I think) cab I used to use for a slave amp. then there's a Peavey combo with 1x10" I bought for 20 bucks and the classic tiny Pignose which, when I want it clean, I put through the aux in the Peavey.

I bet that big one sounds fat as fuck!

Quick question about gates. Never really bother with them but I did on the weekend cos I was recording mellower stuff with more space in the arrangement. I generally end up tracking at about -12 to -6.

Reaper tells me that my noise when I'm not playing, just the hiss from my amp/mic is at about -42. I set a gate at -40 and it seemed to work fine, eliminates the hiss and doesn't seem to clip the ends off any notes.

Is there any more to gating than this? Just finding a level that eliminates hiss while leaving your notes alone.

Are there any drawbacks to gating that I might not be aware of?

You need a fast attack - that means the gate opens instantaneously when it gets a signal. This preserves the transient of the note, the sound of the pick etc. Set the decay (how fast the gate closes) fairly slow so it doesn't chop off any long, decaying notes. The Hold knob sets the minimum time the gate will be held open before the decay control kicks in. You'd need to experiment with that, but a medium setting ought to work for most stuff.

Greg, thanks for the update. I think I'm just going to wait. I know I'll get lucky as there is always stuff floating around. If I'm just going to replace the speakers anyway, I'll just reload an old Kustom 4x12 cab I have laying around that I had taken the speakers out of for a couple of 2x12's (which are much easier to lug around). As I'm in no rush (or any particular need, really) I'll just keep my eyes open.

roll pleated?

Sadly, no. It was one of those stupid moments we have as kids, though. I worked my ass off all summer (I was 16 or so at the time, around 1985) to save some money to buy an amp. Get there and I have a choice between a late 60's silver face Fender Twin for $220 or a Kustom Lead III 120watt 2 channel solid state head with a 4x12 cab for the same price. Youth being what it is (and I remember a few people telling me Twins didn't handle pedals well, which is BS btw) a half stack was an easy sell. The Kustom had more "watts", more speakers, a distortion channel, reverb, the works. I think the last time I used that pos was in high school. I stripped the speakers out of the cab and put in some 60's Jensen knockoff speakers and used that with my '66 Bassman for a while.

Here I made yall a video!

For some reason, it won't play, it's like it's paused dude.....I even checked it on the YT page & same thing...

Something on my end, re-started my computer & it works....I hope to fuck this fuckin' thing ain't takin' a shit on me....

where'd ya' get the bobblehead?

Ok, so here's a clip I made using the new EVH rig, with 4 different guitars, bass & drums...I will say there are some effects, but I didn't eq any of the guitar tracks, just slapped some reverb & other cheesy 80's stuff on 'em....If you guys want, I can post the solo'd guitars...

All guitars except the clean-ish were tracked with the red channel, for the clean-ish, I used the blue channel & rolled the volume back on the guitar...

This is also a test for some new fake drums I've been working on...Lemme know what you guys think about 'em....

Signal chain:
SG>EVH LBX>EVH 4x12>i5

Amp settings:
Low power mode (supposedly around 4w)
Red channel (all except the clean gtr)
Resonance: 2-3
Bass: 8
Mids: 5
Treble: 7-8
Presence: 7-8
Gain: 2-3
Volume: 3

Cheese Eventually Turns To Shit

I gotta say, I love this little amp. The volume is kinda like an old-school Marshall, when it hits about "2" or so on the dial, it's about as loud as it's gonna get, & it just gets dirtier & pushes the tubes harder as you turn it up...

I think that sounds pretty dang good. I do miss the headroom of your other amps though. I can tell the difference. Those guitars are thick and heavy but they lack the punch and dynamics your big watt clips had.

The snare is way loud in that clip. That might be interfering with everything around it. I don't usually concern myself with snare/guitar relationships, but it might be doing something in that little mix with the snare being so out front. Cymbals sound pretty good. :D

China! My wife sent some pics of me to a friend of ours, and he had it custom made. It was a Christmas present, but every time I see him we forget to bring the presents, so I just got it the other day. Christmas in June! Pretty cool right? It fucking looks just like me! :D

Thanks Greg, I can tell a difference too, but just to be totally honest, this little amp is a lot better fit for me at the moment because of the noise. This was a pretty low-volume clip too, it was on 1/4 power, around 2-3 on the vol dial...Don't get me wrong, this little thing is pretty loud, but it's nothing compared to the big amps I had....Eventually I'll go back to those kind of amps, I just can't do it for a little while...

I do tend to get carried away with instrument levels, but the overall drum level was a little high on purpose...(that's my excuse anyway)...;)

Do you think the low-end is flubby on these clips, like when I tried to use the resonance on my big amps??? The reason I ask is the resonance was pretty low in this clip, & it adds a ton of bottom if I need it...

I'll make some more comparison clips tomorrow with different volume & tonestack levels...

BTW, I'm really liking this new cab too, I'll have to do a comparison between the 2 different Greenbacks I have now too....:D

That's pretty nifty MM.
The snare is very 80s out front font.
The drums, generally, sound good good.
