So tell me more about the guitar rig. 69 Plexi - can't go wrong there. What about the cab? Mic? Mic placement?

Your standard older 4x12 cab. Have no idea what speakers were in there. It was just an old ratty marshall cab that was in the room. It was there, sounded good, so I used it. Mic was a 57 on the top left speaker. Drums were maybe 4 ft away with teac pencil condensers for overheads.

Lots of 57s and a single AKG 414 on the other side of the room facing the wall to get the reflections off the wall

With the guitar being so loud it bled into all the other mics.

We used no gobos.

A lot of the 'sim kids' having grown up with that or older sim kids growing up with say a rockman have no idea how to play an amp.

Plenty that can play guitar, and even play it real well. But electric guitar is a two part instrument. Guitar AND amp. A loud amp is a thing of joy but one has to learn it as if it was it's own instrument.

Where to stand, how to turn. When to move in, when to step back. It's like taming a dragon. It will bite you in the ass and set your head on fire until tamed.

A lot never learn that because they don't have to.

Just my thoughts.

Goddamn, couldn't agree more. Most of them have no idea how a real amp sounds or acts. I've talked about fighting the amp, how it pushes back at you, how you can push back at it, etc. That's one of my greatest joys in playing with real amps. It's not just playing the guitar, you play the amp too. It's like a living, breathing, organic thing. Sim people have no fucking idea.

I've let other guitar players play my live setups. It never lasts long with most. For them it just starts going into feedback, they hand back the guitar. Lol.

I'll tell them they have to 'tame' it and i get blank stares. It literally scares some.

One came up on Craigslist around here a while back and I almost bought from what you and Lt Bob had said. Of course, I hardly use a flanger (and I already have a 30+ year old Boss BF-2 that does what I need it to) and outside of a Wah and drive (Blues driver, Tube Screamer or Jekyll and Hyde) I don't really use anything else anymore. But all of that depends on the gig and the band I'm playing with at the time.

the coolest thing (to me) about a Ross is the ability to just manually flange it to whereever you want and leave it there, sorta like a 'cocked' wah.
There's some pretty damned cool sounds that you can't get any other way and they're not really flanging because it doesn't 'move'.

My Mesa Blue Angel sounds nice at lower volumes with pedals but so does every other amp on the planet.
But when I can get it up to a good volume level it just 'sings' in a way that you can't get any other way and it always makes me turn around several times in amazement at my own amp .... that's the best

Yes! That is the best. I love soundchecks because my amp is up loud and I get to fuck around loudly in a big empty room pretty much by myself.

I know exactly what you're getting at with having to play the amp as much as your guitar. For years I recorded exclusively with sims, then got a new amp just before I started playing in a new band. My playing was actually pretty shy for quite a while when I was in that band. I've got used to playing through an amp again now. Its not even that loud an amp, but when I'm recording in my fairly small room, its fairly loud in the room and really does react to your playing. I won't be recording sims again any time soon. They are a useful practice/recording tool though.

So far, so good, seems like a zippy machine, but won't be able to tell until I test it with one of my projects....

It wasn't that bad with my bookmarks, I use chrome, & all I had to do was log in...On the install, I've got about 6-8 discs left to go (out of about 25-30...), then I'll pop the cover off the side of the new pc, slap a hard drive in, copy what I need, then repeat...I should have it all done in a couple more hours....maybe....

I gotta admit, this pc seems a lot faster than my old one, even when it was new. I guess the Intel vs. AMD thing does have some merit for some things...

My extra 1tb hdd & external docking station didn't show up today, it'll be here tomorrow, but it'll probably be just as fast putting the hdd's into the pc...Usb 3.0 is supposed to be really fast, but I have no real experience with it, so I can't say first hand...

I've been installing drum samples for the last hour or so, maybe longer...

In case you missed it, I sold my DSL to fund the new pc, so I'm Marshall-less right now. But I did trade something that goes "BANG" for a little EVH LBX 15w amp, so I'm not amp-less....Should have some clips up tomorrow, so far the little thing rips for gain-y rock tones.....
