The New Tone Thread

My home town in wales there's fuck all sort of band scene so the only people I played with growing up were people I taught to play!

There's more going on in Bristol though so I will probably form or join another band in the next couple of years. My main goal at the moment is finishing off the tracks I'm working on and improving my singing.

This ^ IMHO, is what it's all about dude...

Way back when I first started gigging, my buddies who were "rockers" would make fun of me because I was playing a lot of music they (and honestly I) didn't like (we were high school kids btw). They'd say "But man, you're playing so & so's music...blah blah blah"...Then I'd tell 'em "Well, you're right, but there were 2-300 people there dancing, hollering & listening to me play that shit, while partying down, having a good time. Did your Mommy & Daddy applaud you when you played Crazy Train to your cassette deck Saturday night???"

I was playing live, to an audience, not in my bedroom, & I always made that point to those fuckers, which shut 'em up pretty quickly...And guess what, quite a few of those "rockers" were out there doing the same thing a few years later, when they realized there's nowhere local to play unless you play what these rednecks around these parts wanna hear...

Where I live is waaaay different than where most of you guys live btw, waaaay different....
 
Yeah, mate. When you showed me where it was on a map it did really look like the arse end of nowhere.

I'm the same way .... when I walk into a room I take it over ..... I'm what's happening.

And I've never, ever had anyone comment that I'm playing a suck-gig or so and so's music.
I play well enough that I defy anyone to not notice.

All I ever get is "can I have your child?"

I'm with you guys. By the time I stopped gigging, I hated it. I always hated rehearsing, even though I was always the most prepared guy in the band when it came to playing on stage. I hated moving equipment. I hated the drunk assholes. I hated the idiots I played with who had the mentality of in-experienced 12 year olds. I hated it all by the end.

But one thing I always had was "Watch me fuckers. This is how it's done". Whether I was singing up front, drumming, or singing while drumming, I performed with the charisma of Elvis and the attitude of David Lee Roth, without the spandex and with a better voice. :D

I think that's the true performer in us. Not everyone has that. I always have, as you guys do.

I had a moment like that recently. The one cover we play in my guitar-gig band is Ace of Spades. The rest are originals. But I always do something stupid for my solo on Ace of Spades. So at this one place, from the stage perspective, there's the stage, the monitor wedges, about a 2 foot security gap, and then a wall in front of the crowd to keep them backed away from the monitors. It's the width of a two-by-four. So for my solo I jumped over the monitors and landed perfectly on top of this wall. For me it was only like a small jump up but it was a miracle I kept my balance on top of this wall in my drunken state. But from the crowd's floor level this wall is like waist-to-chest high on them. So right at my landing spot were these girls, and then bam, there I am standing on top of this wall right in front of them blazing away and they were looking up at me and it was quite obvious that their vaginas got drenched. That's rock and roll.

I'm happily married though, so no shenanigans took place afterwards.

The guys that were giving me shit were bedroom warriors who didn't have a clue Bob...I thought it was pretty funny & ironic that just a couple years later, those same guys were asking me to help them get gigs where my band played...

What I don't miss are the drunks that you can't do anything with except be just a total asshole to in order to get rid of 'em, some of 'em were funny, but after so many, it just gets old. I do miss the excitement & rush I got playing live in front of people though. There's nothing like it in the world to me, & I miss the fuck out of it...

My ex-wife used to get so pissed at me when she'd go to a gig with me (which was rare) over nothing really...If she'd saw me do something like that, she'd had a stroke....which seeing her reaction would be almost as good as the feeling I got from playing live....:D

I didn't do it on purpose. I hadn't even noticed these girls before that. They just happened to be where I landed. They must have just come forward for that one song or something.
 
Well, me and my band play classic British punk. It's not technical, it's about attitude, convincing delivery, attention to period detail and honesty to your material, which is easy if you lived through it and it's the music you love.

The most common feedback we get is "Fuckinell... the best band we've had on here".

Half the time, the audience don't know all the songs - they get carried along by the enthusiasm. Nobody wants to watch some absolute Aspie disappearing up their own arse playing Phrygian mode at two million notes per second over a beguine rhythm section. They suck.

I would love to see your band. Yall play stuff I like. I should put a US punk cover band together and we could tour the world spreading the gospel.

Yeah, I really good combined Nirvana/Soundgarden/AIC and Pearl Jam cover band would be great!
 
Lol. Besides Nirvana, the rest of those bands are just cheesy buttrock without the hairspray and spandex.

Listening back to Ten by Pearl Jam it is quite cheesy, the later stuff isn't though - it doesn't have such an 80s hangover in its production.
I think AIC originally intended to be more of a Hair Metal band before they went more durgy in the 90s.

I always think of Soundgarden as more of a 70s style Led Zep/Black Sabbath style band than 80s butt-rock.

haha, I know - Greg can't resist dissing the grunge! I think he gives it grudging respect for killing off sales of Spandex though.

They are literally all the same band. AIC, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, the same bands, the same songs, different singers. The vocal stylings are the only thing that sets them apart from each other, and even that is mostly the same stupid 90s "bwarrrrrrrr" male vocal style. And the only thing that set them apart from 80s cheese rock is instead of spandex, the 90s guys wore docs and flannel. Instead of vocally screeching high, they grumbled low.
