Recently I've developed deer-in-the-headlights syndrome when I'm by myself and the record button is on in my DAW - what the hell?
 
Lol. I think we all get that. You listen back to the simplest rhythm part and you think "oh no, am I really that shit"
 
Lol. Not me. Recording time is when I do my best work. I can flawlessly blast through tracks in one take pretty much any time I want. I aint that good live though.

I've never really had the crickets, but I've played plenty of gigs where there's literally no one there. Remember The Balinese Room in Galveston? I used to play there a lot, and one time we had a gig there and there was no one in there. No one. Just us and the soundguy, and even he left halfway through our set. It was pitifully hilarious.

And back in my psychobilly days no one would book us so we had to crash open mic nights to play gigs sometimes. We got booted out of Dan Electro's Guitar Bar many times. That's a blues place and we went over like a lead balloon. We were convinced we could win over the blues crowd. Never even came close. :laughings:

I can usually do pretty good recording-wise, but I'm probably over-picky about my tracks, so much so that just the slightest little thing anybody else wouldn't hear or notice, I'll keep at it until I think it's good enough....That's probably a big reason I haven't finished any of these fuckin' songs over here....that & I've been living on a crazy train from hell the past year or so....:facepalm:.It's been so long since I've played live, dunno how I'd do really....Back in the day I used to do pretty good though, even if I do say so myself.....

Been there, done that on the gig with nobody there guys....Many, many times actually....I will say the last band I was in usually had a pretty decent crowd about anywhere we played, but the bands before that....terrible....


I'm off for 5 big fuckin' days over here....I'm gonna try my best to break those new speakers in while I'm off...:D.

I never came back & told you guys what I think of the new mic...On it's own, for amp'd guitar tracks, it's just meh...about like the other condenser mics I've got...But, blended with the 609 or '57, it adds some weight & girth to the guitar sounds....But, about like I thought, it can't handle high SPL's, so I'll probably stick to my dynamic mics for my guitar tracks....It's about like the others, I can't get the Chupa past about 2-3 on the master before it clips, even with the pre-amp gain all the way down....It's probably a better acoustic guitar/vocal mic than the other 2 condensers I have, so, I'm ok with it....the POD X3L was gathering dust anyway, so it's no biggie....

Gonna hit the fuckin' bed....

I wish I would have caught those - the Monkease managed to soil the last ever blues jam at that place (kind of bummed they canceled it). We actually had some positive vibes from the crowd, but the management.... picture someone hissing through a gritted-teeth-i'm-going-to-kill-you smile.

After some self-phycho-analysis, I think my recording problem is that I geeked out too much on my equipment over the last few years (think of the oft quoted "If you can't make a good recording with that [fill in the blank], it ain't the [fill in the blank]...") - I need to move on. Maybe I should smash a nice microphone with a sledge hammer.

that'll happen ..... you get so caught up in "getting just the right gear ... THEN I'll sound like I want" and it never ends .... there's always one more piece you need.
You quit focusing on the music and put your creative energy into picking gear ...... but past a certain point, more gear and testing will NOT make you any better and sometimes it makes you worse ..... it's really important to be able to say, "That's good enough."
You can flat-out overdo the gear thing and lose sight of the reason you got started buying gear in the first place.

Too many choices can be paralyzing ......... I have an amazing record collection ...... 6000+ LPs .... I almost never listen to them and part of the reason is I'll go and start looking and there's so many my eyes glaze over and I just put on Sirius.

So at some point you have to just throw a mic on something and get to work.

I'm very guilty of this, I've been going bonkers buying up gear all this year, but, I'm pretty well done for a while, I've got some great equipment/gear over the past few months, & I'm gonna finish up the "album"...I'm actually recording some guitar tracks today for a couple of the songs, so maybe it won't be too much longer......:laughings:.

You guys just summed up my entire last year...it seems that I have more gear than sense. But damn I love gear. I actually wrapped the Audix i5 that I bought. I'm gonna open it in front of everybody too. To me, from me? I shouldn't have! I just wanted to get me a little something to show that I was thinking of me. I'm so thoughtful. And it's just what I wanted! I'll have to send me a thank you card.

To all, a good night. May you all receive the piece of gear that will finally complete your collection (yeah right) :D
 
Ugh. I have a brutal hangover. Was downing port out of a decanter last night. Going surfing in a bit to clear my head
 
Xmas - it essentially over for me/ 18 people turned up, only one fell over, (my old man was watching his beer instead of the stairs & fell UP a few - only spilt a little beer though).
The roasted potatoes, pumpkin, onions, garlic, lamb, chicken, pork and ham went down well but the sweet potatoes didn't seem to be to everyone's taste.
Vanilla ice-cream &/or passionfruit sorbet with mixed berry sauce was consumed with glee as were the jelly babies.
I recount these things because I was up at 6.50am to begin cooking.
Surprisingly the Mr Hanky Christmas Special wasn't too popular.
Most of the left overs went home with my mother -in-law and parents (all pensioners so hard up against the dollar),
It ended up being scorchingly hot (32c) so no one wanted to sit out on the verandah.
Beer consumed by those not designated and the weather changed dramatically at 5.30 with a BIG thunderstorm and lots of rain.
A nice change from the bush fire warning across the last few years.
I hope you all survive your day.
I look forward to a quiet Boxing Day and fiddling about with the mic, headphones & interface the wife bought me.
Here's hoping I get to plug in and play loudly!

I've always thought Christmas night is a good night to gig. I've done a few myself back in the day. People are so sick of sitting around with family forced upon them, they are ready to go out and let loose a little.

Me, I'm gonna go see "The Interview" today. North korea can suck my American balls.
 
I look forward to a review of INterview - now that Sony have done the ARTHOUSE thing.
 
lol ..... I love how Musician's Friend has these various sales, like the warehouse sale right now, and the prices are always about the same as their regular prices. :D

Don't get me wrong .... I like 'em and buy everything from them but they often trumpet an upcoming sale as unbelievable and it's the same prices.

Sometimes their stupid deal is good though and I just ordered a Hardwire Delay for 60 bucks.

Exactly. I've caught them raising prices on things, then reducing them back to their "sale" price for the STOTD. But I like them mainly because I live in KC, and their shipping warehouse is just a few miles from here. I've ordered things one day and received them at 10:00 the next morning. Perfect for the instant gratification thing every once in a while!
