Ok, got the new speakers installed in the cab, I thought I'd have to re-solder part of it, but actually, one of the jacks I wired up already had what I needed....That's good, kinda plug/play after getting the speakers mounted in the cab....

First impressions:

G12-65: Love it so far, it's like my Greenback, but with smoother highs....Seems the mids are just right for me...So far, I like this speaker best out of 'em all....

G12H: Very bright speaker, but with it's own voice, kinda like my Greenback (with the high end it's got), but at a different frequency, if that makes any sense...

Overall, the cab doesn't sound like shit in the room like I thought it would, I can say with the 4-speaker mix, I don't think I'd have any problems cutting through a band mix due to all the mids this thing throws out....lol...

Again, so far, I'm liking the '65 better of the two speakers I got yesterday, but that may change after I've had some time with 'em....

So, here's a couple clips with the new speakers & the new mic:

Signal chain:

LP > G12-65/G12H > e609 > daw (no eq, no reverb, just the raw tracks)

I used the same exact settings on the amp for both clips too, just moved the mic to where I thought it sounded best (of course, the mic position could be a lot better, this is just a quick-n-dirty clip thing....)...

Celestion G12-65 - e609

Celestion G12H - e609

Lemme know what you guys think...I actually called in today, I feel like utter shit, think I'm coming down with the flu....First time I've called in sick all year, & the last time I missed a day at all is when my Dad passed away....

Lemme know what you guys think about the clips, I'm pretty happy with the new gear so far....:).

They both sound good. The 65 sounds just about like it should. The G12H30 will sweeten up as it breaks in. It's a heavy magnet, very efficient speaker, so it's gonna seem spiky for a while with very tight bass. Run some volume through those things to loosen em up.

Thanks Greg....

I really like the 65 a lot, for me, it's got the right balance of bass/mid/treble, & it's not harsh at all....I'm sure it'll get even better as it breaks in....I bet a 4x12 loaded with these speakers would kick ass...

I like the G12H too, but it's really bright...Like you said, it'll settle down after it's been used for a while, & should sound even better....

To me, neither of 'em sound bad, just a little different & that's exactly what I was after, so, this has been a pretty good day or two for me, other than I feel like utter shit right now...

I might tear into the strat in a little while, it shouldn't take too long to swap pickguards, IIRC, there'll be like 2-3 solder connections (grounds), but that's about it really....

I told ya the 65 is a good speaker. :D

A good chunk of that hairy sound you like was probably done through G12-65s. That was the main JCM 800 era speaker for 1960 cabs.

You know, I was really on the fence with this speaker, because I'd heard/read the re-issue (which is what I bought), didn't measure up to the original....To be honest, I'd have to hear the difference in person because to me, this speaker just sounds great right out of the gate...I'm sure the old ones have that "mojo" from being played/drove hard for hours on end, & they're really well broken in...But again, I'd have to hear it in person....

I've yet to try it with the DSL100, but with the Chupacabra, it just sounds great, & doesn't seem "fussy" about getting the mic placement dialed in like other speakers...

I'm really glad I picked the Celestion G12-65 re-issue instead of the WGS version....Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the WGS sounds good too, but I'm very, very happy with the 65 so far...

Kinda on the fence with the G12H, it's not that I don't like it, I just like the 65 a lot more right now, but I'm sure that'll change as I get 'em both broken in, & get used to 'em...

I really like the e609 mic too, only issue I've had with it so far, is my mic clips wouldn't fit it, it's much smaller than a '57, but I did find one that holds it in place fairly well, so I'm gonna have to order a couple more mic clips (I need another one for my condensors anyway, I had 2, but can't find the old one....must be put away somewhere & I can't remember where I put it...)...

I just wish I didn't feel like shit, because my "bastard" 4x12 is pretty much complete now (for recording anyway), I've only had the amp fired up once today because I actually have been asleep & feel like I've been hit with a fuckin' truck tonight...

As ya'll know I frequently post shit not tone related so here comes some.

The view from my gig:
I've started playing here a lotta Sundays ..... I likes it. :)

I look around and there's boats all around me.

Also ...... wifey works for that car mag and part of her job is to go to races and talk with the vendors.

Couple weeks back I went with her to Daytona Speedway for a 24 hour vintage car race.
To my surpise the badges she had got us full access!
I mean FULL freakin' access! We walked anywhere we wanted ..... out thru the pits ..... right on the wall .... thru the garages ...... any-freakin' WHERE!!! It was awesome!
I got a ton of pics of seriously awesome cars but here's a couple .... one's a look down a small part of the garages. The other is me leaning over the pit wall looking at a car that had just come in for something.

:):)

Cool Bob....
The pic with the boats reminds me of my trip to Myrtle Beach this summer....I listened to a band for an hour or so on the night of the 4th, they had about the same PA, they were kind of a reggae/rock band....Pretty decent...I remember the guitar player had a little combo amp, with a shit-ton of pedals, playing a PRS guitar...he broke a string in the middle of one song, but had another one on by the end of that song...thought to myself "that dude need another guitar", but hey, been there, done that, I felt his pain....lol...

Nice pics dude, like I keep saying dude, you're living the dream...I know it's a hard life, but still, it beats crawling around in a fuckin' hole in the ground for a living like I do..:).

Yeah, I couldn't do what you do ..... that's frightening shit to go down into the ground like that.

Nice picks Boob. :)

I played a few shows at the legendary Balinese Room overhanging the Gulf in Galveston, Tx. It was a loooooong haul all the way out to the end of the building, which was essentially a huge pier, and the stage area was way at the back right over the water. I took a fishing pole one time to fish before and after the gig but they wouldn't let me. Hurricane Ike turned that famous place into driftwood in 08. :(

Minerman, did your 609 not come with a clip? Mine did. I thought they all did. It's a skinnier kind of clip.

Feel like a dumb-fuck, but I found my mic clip in the bottom of the box it came in....Just shows how shitty I've felt the past couple days....Still feel pretty bad, but I've gotta suck it up & go on to work today, can't really afford to miss another day...

Thought I was gonna have to buy another insert so the mic clip will fit my stands, but the small brass insert threaded right out, so I'm good to go....lol...

And, here's a clip with the '57 & e609 on the G12-65....full blend, both tracks/mics are the same level...Being an 80's hair metal guy, I put some effects on this one, actually used some of the fx from Guitar Rig, along with some room & plate reverb....Lovin' this new speaker, lemme know what you guys think....

Again, lemme know what you guys think, I might've stumbled onto "my" speaker with "my" amp....:).

Oh yeah, we're getting ready to pass 400 pages in this thread guys, hard to believe it's still goin'....This is the one thread I check, post in, at least on a daily basis, usually more....Great thread!!!

And here's some more of my fuckin' around, this time with some volume....Same mic position, same blend, just some volume....I did mess with the gain knobs & the treble though....

You can hear the amp/speakers "flub" when it's in plexi mode, might be the bass/resonance I've got dialed in, but to me, it does have a vintage kinda vibe when in this mode....While it's great for old-school sounds, I still like the 80's mode best....

Lemme know what you guys think, gotta start getting ready for work in a few minutes....Still feel like utter shit, but gotta go anyway, can't afford to miss another day...

It's the one thread I still read every day. I don't have time for recording right now, it seems, but I'm still following what you guys are up to in here.

Minermanowar...they all sound pretty good to me. Two things....I think the 80s mode sounds a little too mid scooped. Get some mids in there.

And Plexi mode is a little flubby, but you got the bass and master vol working against you there. On mine, and this is pretty common with most Plexi-style amps, the louder you go, the less bass you need to dial in. This is actually pretty common on many amps. But it's pretty common with Plexi players to roll their bass all the way off when playing it very loud. Obviously use your ears, but give it a try and see what yours sounds like in Plexi mode cranked up with the bass and resonance rolled down low.

Thanks Gerg,
The mids were on about 3 for all these clips, so I probably do need to bump 'em up, especially to get these tones to cut through in a mix...Or, I could put one mic on the '65, & the other on the G12H....

Seems my Chupacabra does a pretty good job at the plexi thing IMO, I'm still learning how to dial in certain sounds, & to be honest, I don't use the "regular" plexi mode all that much because it's so fuckin' loud...lol...I mainly use the 80's & modern modes because they've got more gain, & don't rattle the windows as much....hahaha

I had a clip I was gonna post but didn't, it was in plexi mode, but I had the bright 2 switch flipped left, which adds gain, highs, & high-mids...I'll have to try that tomorrow, as it's too late tonight to even think about firing the amps up....

I'm still partial to the G12-65 speaker, although I was listening to "Powerage" tonight on the way home, & I think I could get close to those tones with the G12H speaker....maybe...

Long fuckin' night, so I'm gonna hit the shower & the bed...

There is a very good chance AC/DC used heavy magnet speakers. The "H" speaker......the Blackbacks, Graybacks. There's a distinct searing brightness and cut to AC/DC's early guitar sounds. I'm not a student of their gear or anything so I'm not sure. But it sounds that way, and those kinds of cabs were readily available in that time period.

If you get a chance, I'd like to hear your Chupa in Plexi mode, through the G12H30s, with lower gain, resonance, and bass. See how it does. Bang out some big open chords. Mine will rip your face off with cut and brightness. I like it.

Ok, here's a shitty clip with the G12H, didn't have much time, so this kinda sucks, but you can really tell the difference in this speaker & the '65...Using the 2-mic thing ('57 & e609, the '57 for the "meat", & the 609 for the highs....need to tweak the mic position, but I ran out of time...)...

I've got the 609 track at -4db, & the '57 at -8 in the daw, to me, this blend sounded the best, but of course, I need to tweak the mic positions & the amp, I'm literally out of time today....

No eq or post-processing in the daw of any kind, just the raw tracks....

G12H blended mics

For some reason today, the whole cab seems like it's piercingly bright, might be where I'm still sick with the flu/crud/whatever, but it's really, really bright today, might just be me too....

Lemme know what you think, gotta run...

I liked the Plexi WAY better than the 80's.

In fact I'd go so far as to say I disliked the 80's. Thin and wussy sounding to me.

The blended is pretty bright ...... the basic sound is nice though ..... just too much highs.
