The New Tone Thread

That's super awesome man. Congrats! That's all really cool. I'm happy for you. The big JVMs have two OD channels and 3 modes per channel. Do you know which of the big-brother's OD channel the one-watter has? The two-channel JVMs get the four-channel's "OD2" I believe. I'm wondering if the 1-watt gets the same. Also, in that 2x12, do you find that the G12H-30 overpowers the Greenback?

I find with my JVM410 that the channels and modes typically sound better with the gain lower. The JVM is capable of insane amounts of gain. Pretty much every tone I ever use is with the gain around 3 or 4 regardless of channel.

Thanks man! I don't know for sure, but a quick Google and other forums suggest a similarity between the JVM1 OD channel and OD2 Red on a bigger JVM. I also see some talk of a mod to make it the same as the OD1 channel, which I might consider if I want more granularity at lower gain - but for now, I'm happy with the sound I'm getting.

I don't notice either speaker in my 2x12 overpowering the other, I'll stick my head closer when I have another go later. I think I've checked this before and not noticed anything, but I'll have another check later.

Oh wow. OD2 red is HOT! I can see why you'd like it with the gain low. I like mine like that too. My only gripe with the JVM is that it's got so much gain available that most of it is unusable unless you're a shredtastic metal junkie. And really, that's what the amp is for. There are mods to reduce the gain which makes the gain knobs more usable throughout their range. A lot of people also mod their JVM's OD2 channel to be a second OD1 channel. I think it's a pretty easy mod, but I'm not that tech savvy. The only difference between the two is the mid voicing. The big JVM's OD1 channel has a more traditional sound - like a hot-rodded 800. OD1 is a JCM 800's twin brother. OD2 has it's mids centered a little lower for a more modern sound. If a more "classic" OD sound is what you're after, doing that mod to your JVM-1 might be the ticket, if it's doable on those amps. But whatever, rock that shit. Let's hear some clips! :)

Ok, here's a clip - I left the AD drums I played along to in, please forgive my shitty timing and fluffed notes. I don't have time to play around much with the mic positioning, but tried a couple of spots and this was the best one (kind of on the edge of the cap bit of the cone).

I recorded with: Gibson LP Traditional Bridge Pickup -> Marshall JVM1-H -> Greenback/G12H-30 2x12 -> SM57 on Greenback speaker -> Roland Quad Capture stock preamp -> Reaper

JVM1 settings were: -

OD channel
Resonance switch activated
Presence - 4
Bass - 8
Middle - 2
Treble - 4
Volume - 7
Gain - 1!

Haha cool! Very fat. Gain on 1 huh? I can believe it. Tons of gain in the JVMs.

Unreal tone, well done getting that sound with such low gain/highs

I'm still alive & well over here, I spent the night with my parents last night to help my Mom with my Dad (his health is getting so bad, he can't stand on his own, & has to have someone there with him 24/7....last night it was my turn....breaks my heart guys to see him like this, but, he's not gonna be like this much longer I don't think, he's getting ready to "go home", which sucks, but it's better than seeing him suffer like this....)....

So, got the LP yesterday after I left, haven't even plugged it in yet, but here's a couple/few pics:

The finish isn't what I expected from the pics, it seems to be very "flat" compared to the glossy look in the pics on the website, but, I looked it over, & so far so good, no dings, scratches or anything....I strummed around on it for a couple minutes before I took these pics, & it was even still in tune.....

Awesome! I aint gonna lie, I've been waiting for your update! I know what you mean about the finish. I've noticed that some of them have the "vintage" satin kind of finish to them too. Love the speed knobs and chrome pickups though! Plug that bitch in.

Sorry about your dad though. Hang in there man.

Hey Miner - guitar looks great. The finish looks a bit like a Firebird's. Can't wait to hear it.

Sorry to hear about your dad. Mine has Alzheimer's and has just been diagnosed with Parkinson's as well. It's weird when they start to fall apart.

Thanks for the kind words about my Dad guys, he's got lung cancer, was diagnosed about 18 months ago, & the doctors more or less gave him 2 years to live....It ain't easy to say the least, but I'm trying to hang in there, just like he is....

Love the new LP so far, again, I haven't even plugged it in, but I've got the DSL-1's tubes warming up as I type this, so I'll post some clips with the new guitar & new mic in just a little while.....

Greg: You got the plexi, right????? Let's see it dude!!!!!! The old lady said "wow, this one's different than your other guitars, ain't it???"..:laughings:.

I haven't had a chance to listen to your clips guys, but I'll get around to 'em in just a bit....Gonna see what this bitch sounds like through the 'lil Marshall!!!!

Sweet Guitar MM.

Hey Greg, we're listening to "Tis the Season for Los Straightjackets over here.

Beautiful guitar man ....... your love for your dad will be in every note you ever play on it.
Gonna be some special music that will come from that one.

Jonny: Nice man, really nice, I almost bought the JVM-1, but went for the DSL-1 instead...to me, they sound really similar, & both have tons of gain (I think the JVM-1 has more, but that's ok, I can use a boost pedal if I need more...)....Sounds good man, post some more!!!!

Bob: Very, very nice thing for you to say man, I've been pretty tore up the past day or two, but that's really cool of you....Not gonna go there as I'm about to get upset again.....Love the LP so far, only thing I don't like are the strings (seems they're just a cheap set they threw on it), & the action is just a little buzzy, but that's nothing a string change & setup won't take care of, which I'm gonna do after I stuff my face in a few minutes...thanks again man!!!!

Ok, here's a shitty clip (& it's long too guys...couldnt help myself :)) this thing plays better than I expected, as mentioned, I need to change the strings & give it a setup for me, but overall, I'm really, really impressed with the new LP....Way brighter than I expected too, dunno if it's the 490's & combination of the wood, but again, it's really bright....Of course, it's gonna take some time to get it "settled" & learn how to set the amp/mic better, but again, I'm fuckin' impressed!!!!! Nice, chunky sounding guitar, with lots of clarity/high end.....So far....I love it!!!!

LP > DSL-1 > V30 > C1 mic (set about where the cap meets the cone, about 4-5" away from the speaker, different placement than I've been using, just for shits-n-giggles...), I'm messing with the gain on the amp throughout the clip, using the SD-1 in places, & switched channels + using the SD-1 toward the end, but the tone controls on the amp are the same.....There are some post-fx (room 'verb & a plate 'verb) to give it a little depth, as the ISO cab is dry as fuck...I'll post a better clip after while, but right now, I've gotta grab a bite to eat, starving out over here...

DSL-1:
Bass: 10
Mid: 5
Treble: 3
Vol:10
Gain (red channel): 3-5
Gain (green channel): 10

wow ..... that sounds great! Really nice note definition too ..... impressive.

Sorry I didn't see your post Sam, so far, I love the new LP....very different from my Ibanez & Strat, but I knew it would be....

My initial impression on the C1 mic is it's about the same as my Samson, but with just a tad more low end, which is a good thing with my low watt amps & ISO cab....I'm gonna set up the other mic boom/mic tomorrow, so I'll finally have a 2-mic setup inside the ISO cab....

Sounds awesome minerman. I agree with LtB, it's very articulate. Sounds really awesome playing those classic sounding riffs. How do you like that big ol heel on it though? It doesn't bother me because I rarely venture up past the 15th fret LOL. But I know some better lead players really hate the heel on an LP.

I do have the Plexi sitting here, but haven't done anything with it yet. Today.....there will be some noise....

Thanks Greg,
To be honest, I've been waiting to see what you thought of the first clip with the LP dude, yes, it's very articulate man, but it's still got chunk too, it's a great guitar man, to be totally honest, after reading some of the horror stories about Gibsons, I was really wondering if it was gonna live up to what I expected it to be, but after a couple days with it, I have to say, it's the best playing & sounding guitar I've had since I started back about 5 years ago.....The heel doesn't really bother me dude, as the Ibanez & Strat I own are both bolt-on guitars, & while they're not all that bad really, the LP doesn't bother me at all, in fact, I find it as comfortable to play as my Ibanez (I just have to get used to the neck, even with it being the 60's profile, it's still much fatter/thicker than the Ibanez), which had become my main guitar for about 2 years or so....Guess that's gonna change now though....:)
Really, really happy with the new LP, it plays & sounds great!!!!

Cool on the plexi Greg, I'd been wondering when you were gonna break it out, but I know some folks are really busy during the holidays....Clips & pics dude, when you get around to 'em, & I hope it lives up to your expectations man...Congrats!!!!

Awesome. I'm truly happy for you. LPs are rock and roll machines! You got the magic combo now - LP into a Marshall. You can't go wrong! One thing I really like about mine is how responsive the pickups and controls are. I'm just a buzzsawing rhythm player mostly and never use these features, but I do really like how rolling the volume and tone knobs really changes the sound but it never gets ugly or unusable. Even with the amp set up for face melting, a light touch yields a light sound. The picking dynamics are great.

I took some pics as I was unboxing it. I'll post em up in a sec....
