The New Tone Thread

I'm not a big wah guy though, so don't take my opinions too seriously on that. My use of a wah is more for an over-the-top effect as opposed to making notes sing or anything like that.

I have a Dunlop Crybaby 535Q sitting here on my pedalboard, and to me, it's a fantastic wah. It's got adjustable sweep ranges, an optional boost, and some other shit that I've never even messed with. Lol. It can go from deep and fat to kill you screechy and everything in between. I just have it set in the middle somewhere and rarely actually use it for anything.

Here's a cover song I did using the 535Q. The solo at the end is mild wah retardedness. The guitar and amp is the Les Paul and the JMP.

to me it had less of everything .... there didn't seem to be much sweep going on. It's fat sounding but to my ears it's because there isn't much 'wah' there.
 
Yeah, I'm pretty much the same on the wah thing Greg, I'll use it once in a while, but I've really never used one a lot. The song you posted sounded great, & the wah just "fit" the song really well....

I remember when I was about 17 or so, the bass player in my band (which all of the guys were twice my age...lol) got me into playing slide, & he always pushed the wah on me, saying "you need to learn how to use the wah with the slide"...but I never did really. I will say he got me into slide quite a bit, & I love that, but I've just never been into the wah thing....

Got about an hour before I leave for work, so I've gotta go, this last hour before I have to leave kills me, I fucking hate that place, but it pays the bills & feeds us. It's not so much the place, it's the people who run it, & the way most guys who work there get treated. The supervisors/bosses don't do me like that, becuase they know I'll go apeshit on 'em, but it's sad to see some of those younger guys get shit on, when the guys "over" 'em know they have to put up with that shit because they've got families....bunch of pricks.....

Thanks again for the listens & comments guys, maybe I can do another shoot-out thing with all the shit I have....just something to pass the time yesterday really, but, all this piddling/fucking around is actually helping me improve my sound(s) in the long run....I think.....:laughings:
 
Yeah dude, this past March made me 23 years doing this shit....matter of fact, I'm out the door right now....

I did try mapping my midi keyboard to the wah in Reaper, but hit a snag, & didn't have time to figure it out. I know it can be done though, so that's probably what I'll do tonight, set up the keyboard for the wah thingie in Reaper......I could just use the wah on my X3L, but if I screw up, I can't change it, that's what I really like about these ampsims, I can fix my fuck-ups....

See you guys in about 10-12 hours.....

Bob: I almost bought a PicoValve, but I bought the Blackstar HT-5 instead. It was cheaper for me at the time because the HT-5 I had was a combo, & I would've had to buy a cab/speaker with the PicoValve...I've heard good things & bad things about the PicoValve, but have never tried one myself....My take is it'd be like any of the low watt amps (including my 'lil Marshall, which I like a lot...). The only thing about my 'lil Marshall, it doesn't have much bottom end, but, I'm running it through a single 12" speaker in a home-made ISO box too...

I'm seriously thinking about putting one of my speakers back into my Randall 1x12, because it's a little oversized for a 1x12, & might give me some more "thump/chunk"/low end, & since I've got the place to myself until I leave for work everyday now (my wife went back to work...), I could record without worries....Late at night would still be the ISO or ampsims though...

I'm gonna work on mapping my midi keyboard to the wah pedals tonight, I know it can be done, I almost had it before I left today, but as usual, ran out of time....I do know it'll work though, the last song I finished (well, if you wanna call it that...) I did the volume automation with the fader on my midi keyboard, one track/fader at a time, kinda like one of those Presonus things, but a lot cheaper (my midi keyboard cost me $40 brand new...the Faderport things are about $150-200 IIRC....)...It'd be a lot easier/faster for me to use a knob/fader for the wah/fx than drawing the automation curves in by hand, even if I did have to go over 'em & tweak 'em...

Gonna go grab a shower, shave, something to eat, & play with the daw awhile...probably won't be back until tomorrow....post up some toans guys!!!!!!
 
Well, I got my midi keyboard mapped to the ampsims for my wah pedals....AT3's automation/midi thing is pretty stupid to be honest, GR5 is straightforward & simple....Not that I'm gonna be using the wah all the time, but it'll be nice to record the envelope automation using a slider/knob instead of drawing the curves in by hand.....Like I mentioned yesterday, I'll probably have to go in & tweak the automation points a little here/there, but it should be much faster & easier than the way I'd been doing it.....


No time for tones today, slept a little longer than I usually do, long night at work, & I'm out the door in about 5 mins again.....I do have a 3 day weekend coming, so a couple/few more shifts, & I get a day or two off to lay on my ass.....:D
 
You know what's easier than all that? Plugging a guitar into a wah and then plugging that into an amp. :D

Absoulutely right on the money dude(s), but honestly, the wah(s) I have are in the POD, & IMHO, the software sims sound better. Maybe it's just me, I dunno.....Plus, if I fuck up (using the wah), I can re-do it, with the same performance/take that I've already recorded....Of course, lots of practice would solve this issue too....:facepalm:

That's great Groovy, what'd they give you, Loratabs, Percocets, Oxycontin, Morphine or what??? If you really wanna float, crush about 4-5 of 'em up, & snort 'em...Or if you wanna go all out on a float-binge, crush 'em, put 'em in a spoon w/a little water, cook 'em & shoot 'em like smack...Just kidding dude, glad you feel better, but be warned, those "feel good" pills can grab you by the boo-boo before you know what's going on, just a little friendly advice from someone who's saw first hand the destruction that shit can do.....It's been an epidemic here where I live, people dying from that shit...2 out of 3 people who apply for jobs around here can't pass the required drug screen, & if they do, usually by the time they get a paycheck, they're whacked outta their heads, & end up getting the boot anyway...

I have a nephew who's been on that shit (mentioned above, snorting/shooting/IV'ing) for the better part of 10 years, & he looks like a walking dead man. Lost all his teeth, can't hold a job, been in rehab countless times, is about 6' tall, & weighs about 90 lbs (he used to be a great football player, health as a horse, about 200 lbs of ass kicking running back...), has Hep C, his ex-wife won't even let him see his kids (& I really don't blame her), been in jail numerous times, he's picked a great fuckin' way to spend his life...Went through all that shit (& is still going through it btw), because pills made/make him feel good...And, btw, he started out taking those things because he got hurt playing football, & spiraled out of control....

Rant over, but you'd better watch though all shit aside, & yes, you're right if you think I don't like that shit.......

Since you feel so good, crank up your rig & post us some fuckin' tones dude.....You have the DSL-15, right??? I wanna hear it, as I almost bought that amp, but got the 1w version instead...
 
the best way to get good tone is to do drugs ..... seriously, that's why I'm where I am today wherever that is ....... really, I'm not sure ..... someone help me outta this ditch.

I said good tone .... didn't say squat about playing ability..... I played my first gig for money when you were 2 years old ...... I was joking anyway ...... I'm positive I've woodshedded far more than you and we've yet to hear anything from you except rambling nonsensical uselessness.

On the tone chase thing, I'm looking at those JOYO pedals pretty hard the last few days. I know they're copies/knock-off's, but from what I've read, they do a pretty good job on sounding like the pedals they clone. Anyone here tried any of 'em, & in particular, the Carl Martin Plexi-Tone clone???

nah ....... not if it sounds good outta the box.
I just don't care about that sorta thing too much. I'll be too busy gigging with it.

Now .... it's single ended so it's gonna use up tubes relatively quickly so I'll probably be replacing the power tube maybe yearly and at that point I'm likely to use a different tube just for the hell of it .......maybe a 6550 but then whatever I try'll stay in there 'till it needs replacing unless it sucks.
But it'd have to be pretty bad for me to care.
And really ..... if it sounds good with whatever is in there when I get it why wouldn't I just put another one in?

Personally I find the obsession with tiny differences of tone not useful for what I do.
Perhaps if I ever really do any recording I might care but even then I'd tend more towards amp-rolling if I wanted a different tone as in 'roll in another amp'.
