Slower is very rarely better IMO. Jerry Nolan was a cool drummer. He's dead too you know. The only Dolls still alive are Sylvain and Johansen.

and they rock like motherfuckers

they got earl slick on guitar

earl slick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, here's the latest attempt at the VH 1 sound, a little closer (I think) thanks to Greg sending me some reverb ir's....Lemme know what you guys think, & if you're getting sick of hearing the same old shit, lemme know too....:D

I'm gonna go play golf this morning though. Punk rock! :D

I love this thread. It is nice to see it has held it's own this long. SO AWESOME!

I am gonna try to work on some new tones now. Too much acoustic-y stuff in my diet for me lately!

Yes, that's very very close. If you had told me that's the real VH tone pulled from the original guitar track, I'd probably believe it. Amp sim again? :D

Lol. Acoustics are for campfires, literally, throw them in a fire.

Thanks dude, yeah, another ampsim clip, I did a lot of A/B'ing with the original/Rock Band clip, & it's pretty close. I think I can get it even closer eq-wise too, but it'll take some more time. There's something in the low mid/mids I'm not getting exactly, & it's driving me nuts!!!

On the 'verbs, I used the one you suggested (large chamber? I can't remember really), panned out about 70% L on a send/aux track (100% wet), but I also used another reverb you sent me (wide chamber), but left it panned in the center, & had the volume pretty low compared to the guitar & other 'verb. I'm pretty sure this 'verb is what's helped me get closer to the original, along with some eq'ing after comparing with a spectrum thingie...

hey fellas im in a wheelchair!

i got attacked by dogs last night and i fell down an embankment and broke my arm and messed up my knee real bad

whats next???

sounds cool man

pics fool.
:laughings:Sorry to laugh at ya Groovy, but we need pics or it didn't happen....Thanks for listening to my clip too btw...

Greg: I posted my ampsim clip in the Marshall forum, & a guy (who's a killer player, & an all around good dude) gave me some suggestions about the 'verb....Of course, I tried 'em, but I felt my track originally sounded closer to the VH track....He went on telling me about amps, speakers, mics, mic position, you know, all that shit, so I played along innocently.....

When he asked what amp I was using (his quote was: "more importantly, what amp are you using?"), I dropped the bomb on him....haven't heard anything back from him in the thread, but there are a few people who keep asking about my tone....I think it's funny as hell, these guys (I'm guilty of it too though) are spending thousands on amps, cabs, etc., & getting the same recorded tone (or as close as I'm interested in anyway) is possible with software, which is mostly free....Fuckin' priceless!!! Of course, I wasn't a smartass or anything, & even explained I wasn't trying to fool anyone, but I felt I could get closer to that particular tone with an ampsim....

I haven't tried the 'verbs you sent me on anything but the VH sounds dude, but I really like 'em so far. I have a bunch of other reverbs (vst's), but I think I might go the IR route on my next song. I've just always used the vst's, so I'm gonna give 'em a shot....

Any particular ir's you like (other than the mentioned "wide chamber" on drums) for other stuff??? Thanks again for sending 'em dude....

I think it's time to move on to another tone too, I'm beating a horse's skeleton, I've beat it so long now, it's rotted away, & there's nothing left but the bones...:laughings:I might try an Alice In Chains tone next, I've got a couple of their isolated tracks I can A/B my stuff to.....:)

I hate to break this to ya, but those guys at the marshall forum are fucking idiots. Seriously. I read that place. I read the tech section and there's some decent info in there sometimes, but the rest of the site is like a big overflowing bucket of stupid over there. Those guys have not a clue.

As for reverbs....hmmmm....I don't use much. I like "wide chamber" or "drum room" for drums. I use a touch of wide chamber on guitar leads too. But just a little. That reverb can get really crazy really fast. Sometimes, but rarely, I'll bus the rhythm guitars to a guitar group and put the "guitar room" or "real room" reverb on there. But again, just a touch. I mostly hate reverb unless I'm getting surfy. For vocals I usually use one of the ambience files. I don't like VST reverbs usually, but Glaceverb is a nice one. I use that one a lot on little things like tambourines, shakers, kazoos, etc.

If you want a copycat tone challenge, try your hand at some early Johnny Ramone sounds. I have yet to hear anyone anywhere successfully copy his tone. I'm as big a Johnny fanboy as they come, and I sure can't do it. I really think it may be impossible. On paper it should be very easy - single coil guitar, blaring Marshall, downstrumming power chords. Basic stuff, right? Nope. Somehow, some way, he did it in a way that just sounds totally unique.

Dude, they are idiots everywhere really, I'm not taking up for the guys at the Marshall forum (there are a handful guys there that are cool, & are helpful all the time....there's a few guys there, if I ever saw them in real life, I'd choke 'em until their eyes popped out of their heads...:)), but really, there are idiots everywhere....

One of the guys I'm talking about is a pure prick. I was asking about NOS tubes for my DSL, & he made a smartass comment like "The tubes are clearly labeled with numbers, can't you read?" or something to that effect. I was asking for brand suggestions (IE: a Tung-Sol might sound different than a JJ for example)...I didn't say anything smartass back, but if I saw that guy around here, I'd probably give him a good 'ol fashioned country-boy ass whoopin' as he's did that to a lot of guys there....He's just disrespectful as hell...You know, I'm all for joking & fucking with people, but I always try to do it in a nice way, he's just a prick...Plus, I just don't like the way that fucker looks...:laughings:

Still haven't heard back from "that" guy, he may have a gig or something tonight. I know he's in a band, but I consider him a "cork sniffer" myself, as his answer to all tone questions really ends up being "just spend $$$ on better gear" or the "throw money at it" approach....while that may be (& probably is to a point) true, some of us just can't go out & spend thousands of $$$ on gear....

As for reverbs....hmmmm....I don't use much. I like "wide chamber" or "drum room" for drums. I use a touch of wide chamber on guitar leads too. But just a little. I usually use 3 different 'verbs: room, plate, & hall, but only a little of each, & it really depends on what kind of song. But, like the last song I did, I was going for the 80's thing, so I used a lot of all of 'em....The room thing really helps individual instruments I think, gives 'em a little "depth" IMO....Most of the time, I use the plate 'verbs more than the halls too, but again, it just depends on the song....

For my drums, I use the 3 'verbs I mentioned, but usually never use anything except room on the kick, & very little....On the rest of the drums (snare, hats, oh's), I'll use quite a bit (usually plate) to make 'em sound like they've been recorded in the same room as the other instruments (or I try to anyway...)

I used Glaceverb a couple/few years ago, & it was pretty good. I've been using Valhalla's Room 'verb a lot lately, it's pretty cheap, & surprisingly good (to me anyway)....I've also got a bunch of vst 'verbs so, I should be covered really, but, I've always wanted to try those Lexicon 'verbs (the really expensive vst's), but just can't see paying more for a plug-in than I paid for my computer to run it on....

Hmmm......well, I'm really not looking for a copycat challenge, & to be honest, I'm really not into the Ramones or the punk thing, I just thought it would be cool for me to try & get a Jerry Cantrell-ish tone, since I thought I got pretty close to the VH thing....Plus, I've got 2-3 of the Rock Band things of AIC's songs, & it would be easy for me to dial in the sound with the isolated guitars....

I remember you talking about Johnny's tone in this thread IIRC, but to be honest, I've never really listened to the Ramones much, if any, other than what I've heard on the radio or if one of their songs was on a movie (I remember "Blitzkrieg Bop" on a movie years ago, National Lampoon's Vacation I think...)...

I could send you the Ramones song I have in OGG format, just open a new project in Reaper, drag-n-drop the OGG file, & there you go....Lemme know dude, I could send that one, or any (or all) of the 300+ songs I have like it....
