What did you think of that other one I posted? I think that's a Gretsch - I've always thought the shape is cool but don't like the pickguard.
The commie guitar? I think that's an ES-135. I think the floating tailpiece means 135, but I'm not 100% sure on Gibson's ES guitars.

I didn't know the bloke from Nickelback at a sig Les Paul - surely he's only worthy of an Epi!
Lol. It's really not bad. I'm not a big fan of flame tops, but they did a nice job with the stain/finish on his.

That's looks alright - but it also looks like a PRS.

I've just checked the other one, yeah. Its a 135. That one I posted was Neal X from "Legendary" London New Wave grounp Sigue Sigue Sputnik! I saw him play recently as Marc Almond's guitarist - he's taken the communist flag off it now. Although a communist flag would be hilarious for a punk musician from Texas...

The punk community would not mind a soviet logo. They'd think nothing of it down here. Texas punks are the same as anywhere punks. You might have some trouble with it at a blues or country bar though. The confederate flag would be the opposite. The hicks would love it, the punks would hate it.

Greg, thanks for the tip on the '57. Good to know that there is the same misleading similar pickup in that line as the BB. Else I may have accidentally bought the wrong ones like I did with my BB set. Shoulda examined those pics more closely before i bought these!

Bob, one of the last major remnants of my long-standing GAS is for an ES-335. The main flavor that I'm missing is a semi-hollow with PAF-style pickups. It's hard not to envision it in classic Gibson fader cherry. But I bet that an Amber or light color could do some major favors for the right maple top. One good thing about being broke is that I now have zero desire to go peruse Reverb for used 335's :)

Keep us updated, I'd love to see it in progress.

My Les Paul had those real hot 500T or 498T....whatever ...I can't remember the exact number. Anyway, I hated them and I replaced them with "Seymore Duncan 1959" humbuckers. I love those pickups! they are the alnico 2, like the original burst buckers. if you see a used set come up on ebay you should give them a shot. You won't regret it.

I had a Duncan '59 in the neck of my tele. It sounded great, particularly when coil split.

Yeah those SD 59s are great. If I ever swap out the pickups in my Custom, I'd probably go with those or the Pearly Gates.

Well, my tele had a Pearly Gates in the bridge. It had a bit of a tendancy to mush out and lack clarity/note separation. Which I don't get with the JB.

I don't understand how you get the total opposite results from everyone else in the world. :laughings:

SSSPUTNIK - now there was a short lived, hyper hyped, not very good band. Though, to be honest, that was the point of the exercise.

I know. I have got a lot better at dialing an amp in since then which may have something to do with it.

Those FMT telecasters are pretty common, you should easily be able to find one to check if you like the pickup combo. They're mahogany too so should sound similar to a Les paul

I don't know about all that. A Teles build and scale length kind of put me off even for a pickup comparison. But I've heard enough Pearly Gates and 59s in the real world to know that I'd be pretty happy with either of them. They're pretty much right what I look for in pickups. Probably the 59 moreso. I'd only consider them for the Custom because I can get them in white. Gibson doesn't make any white bobbin pickups.

Here's one: https://reverb.com/uk/item/1937432-...2UI-fHtrcNqkbeOf3_5YnymYbnrmsZUeCYaAgag8P8HAQ they seem to be holding their value pretty well, I think I let mine go for just under 400 quid though 'cos I just wanted to get rid of it.

Dunno why, I just never got on with the PG for heavy more metal sounding guitar parts, was fine for more sludgy grunge.

That Tom Delonge has a Dirty Fingers in it. That's a blazing hot pickup. Super high output ceramic humbucker.

I'm sad enough to be listening to pickup comparisons on the SD website... really. Its amazing what you'll listen to when you're checking foundation recommendations!

The crunched JB is definitely a sound I'm familiar with:
JB | Seymour Duncan
The crunched Pearly Gates sounds nothing like I remember it:
Pearly Gates – Bridge | Seymour Duncan
I remember mine being quite dark; that one is quite bright.

You better not put white SD 1959's in your cherry burst custom greg....
You may get the urge to router it for a middle pup and "Ace" it.
:)

That's how I know them to sound. Those clips are pretty accurate to me. Perhaps your Tele's Pearly Gate was "dark" because of the vol/tone pots. Maybe it was made with single coil friendly 250k pots, which would make a humbucker sound darker than usual.

Haha, busted. It would look very Ace and that's what I'd go for. But I'd never route it out. Maybe just get the white bridge pickup and put a smoker in the neck position. :D

Could be, that guitar had coil splits and both the pickups sounded great split, but a bit dull normally. I remember thinking that I wouldn't get a Pearly Gates again - even though a lot of the reviews raved about them.

Well you like what you like. Maybe your ears just don't get along with one. But I've never heard of anyone call them dark or muddy. I think most people that don't like them don't like their low-ish output. There are so many options now though that there's something for everyone.

Back in the 70s the Super Distortion was THE hot pickup. I think they sound mostly like ass, but at the time they were the shit. People were throwing their original PAFs and T-Tops in the garbage for those things. Now they rummage through the garbage hoping those PAFs are still in there.
