Cheers, Ray. still working on retracking stuff, but wanna start some new stuff soon. Struggling with the singing at the moment. Basically, I'm shit at it and finding it frustrating, cos it's taking much longer to get it done than recording guitar parts.

I gotta do some catching up. Been a crazy weekend.
You have a good gig?

I've got an upside to my frustrating singing this weekend. I went back to working on a riff I was struggling with - just couldn't get it to sound big and heavy - my usual technique of adding another riff over it, wide panning it and sitting it back a bit worked:

I think I'm getting the sound I want on this one finally although any tips to improve it would be gratefully recieved. I also need to do some more work on how to mix it to clarify it a bit more so any tips here would be helpful too!

The gig sucked. I hate daytime gigs. Hate them. We should have canceled this thing a looong time ago because there was always uncertainty whether or not the other guitar player could even do it due to his work schedule. I've been telling them for weeks now "just cancel this stupid gig". Turns out, he couldn't do it, they never canceled, and I was the lone guitard player. Which was fine, actually. Everyone that knows us as a band says we should stay that way. Lol. But I didn't like the unprofessionalism of the whole event, and our own involvement, so it sucked. And of course, and as always at this venue, the soundguy sucked. It must be the room because I know soundguyss are terrible, but not a single one of them can handle this room,The one and only good thing that happened was that I got to meet and hang out with two of my musical heroes live and in person.

JDOD....nice riff.
liv_rong....I like the delayed guitar. It makes it sound like a lot more is going on on the playing than actually is

OK Greg, I'll bite - which two?
I suppose playing within those circumstances - and man I hate uncertainty - at least paid off with the meet 'n' greet.

I've been invisible to recording for way too long. Never mind the lack of creativity, but from June of 2015 to November of 2015 I was "moving" or more accurately, trying to sell my house. That means my studio gear was all packed up so the house looked more "presentable."

Fast forward to February of 2016 and we've moved into a new house. A four story row house with a potential studio on the fourth floor. For the past three months we've unpacked and perfected almost all of the house. All that remains is my studio...

This thread has kept me motivated. And this week I will start unpacking and assembling my studio. I'm stoked to make some connections and post some tones. Stay tuned... :)

Just to contrast the last one, this is one that's loud and distorted:

Aside from just beeing a cool riff, that actually sounds pretty decent too. Is that just the mic on the camera.

Are you wearing a kilt?

Lol no I'm wearing pajama pants. And it's interesting I get better overdriven tones with my phone than with a mic on a cab. It's a combination of not taking the time to find the right spot and just sucking in general. This is just an iPhone 6s.

Welcome back! I was wondering where you have been.

Sounds pretty good, man.

For the past few months I have been recording what I think are cool ideas with my phones camera. I dont set anything up, Im just using it as a tool to remember what I am playing and also to listen back when Im not in the moment so I can better flesh out stuff and if its even worth it. This first one is from today, I tuned my Dot Studio to Drop C and have been messing a bit with it.

This one is real nice. Good tone and delay for it.

This one I'm not liking as much. I can't get past the sound of pick hitting strings. It's one of my pet peeves. And I generally dislike those drop-tuned mallcore riffs. But the tone seems pretty appropriate for the style. And that is one sweet ass Goldtop. :D

This one's real good to me. You're definitely making improvements. I do't have any problem with the clarity in the mix. Maybe the guitars could use a little more low end for riffs like that.

Handsome Dick Manitoba and Daniel Rey (again). I'd met Mr Rey before, but this was a first for Handsome Dick and he was awesome. :)

High praise, indeed! Cheers mate. Gonna finish re-tracking this bastard next weekend. While continuing my singing procrastination... when I know that the basic problem is that I don't practice my singing anywhere near as much as I play the fucking guitar.

Handsome DM - that is cool. Is he as hairy as he's depicted?

Haha, I don't know. He was total NYC though. He looked exactly like you'd imagine an old NY street thug would look....and this was his travel clothes. He wasn't even dressed in his rock and roll clothes yet. He just rolled out of the van and I happened to be there. He was yelling at his guys about doing laundry. Lol. The club we played has a washer and dryer in the backstage area, so he was excited about that. Anyway, I just went right up to him and said "Handsome Dick Manitoba". He spun around and and greeted me, I introduced myself, we shot the shit for a few minutes, I told him how I admired his work and everything he's done for my kind of music, and he couldn't have been more gracious and polite. I mean, this guy was there. He's an original. I didn't wanna keep him too long, though I got the impression he would have chatted with me all day since I actually was aware of his history and not just some autograph seeker. But I let him get back to his laundry and just went on about my day.

I just looked him (and the other guy you mentioned up) they seem to have been involved in everything in the New York scene.

Yup.

My Daniel Rey encounter was cool. I didn't even know he was there. I knew he'd played with Handsome Dick in the past, but I mostly know of him from his work with the Ramones. So I'm on stage getting ready to play, my new Custom is on the stand, and I hear a voice behind me "what year is that Custom?". I spin around to answer and it's Daniel fucking Rey. Mind blown for the second time that day. I'm not even a musical hero worship kind of guy, and here's two musical heroes in one building. So we talk about my guitar, I let him play it, and then it was time for me to go on and he stayed and watched, so that was cool.

That's cool, to actually get to play for some of your musical heroes... hmm, celebrity audiences... I played a gig last year with famous UK nature documentary presenter Bill Oddie in the audience (Bubba will know who I'm talking about... if David Attenborough is a Les Paul Custom, Bill Oddie is a Chibson with the bridge in the wrong place and cheap single coils under the humbucker pickup covers.
