@ray - that seems to be pretty common on the tube of you. Your analogy is sufficiently nasty as to be highly memorable :-)

so are there any tombs or what? i went through 4 pages and no tombs.

Edited - My mistake, Chuck, sorry, I misread what you posted.

Randall RV112GB Guitar Speaker Cabinet at AMS

I almost bought this, but decided on the Heritage 30. Eventually, I'll have a Greenback cab too.....

You might wanna try Avatar cabs too Sam, they have some pretty good deals, & you can get whatever speaker you want loaded for ya........

So the Heritage 30 is not a greenback?
That's what I needed.

Celestion Heritage Series G12M and G12H "Greenback" Reissue Speakers Reviewed

Thanks, I think I'm going to look for a straight Greenback Cab.
I've got an Alnico in my 15w Vox and I would like an extension speaker to get some different
voicing and tone. It looks to me like the straight greenback is going to provide the biggest contrast to
what I already have. It won't even be as loud which may help for around the house.

I'm not sure about this amp yet. For one thing, I'm having a hard time dialing it in.
For another, I've got to be further out front of it to not hear so much the quack coming from the back of the cabinet.
Fo another, I can't play it loud in my house long enough to try to dial it in.
For another, I think the speaker has a long way to go to break in.
For another, I'm not sure Vox is the amp I was really looking for, now that I am really looking at the stuff
I like to listen to, I'm seeing lots of Marshall Stacks.

OTOH, I have been able to coax some really sweet raw punk amp tone out of it, so I think it still has potential.
I want to hear it with a greenback.
A place that I play Kung Fu at lets me have a key, so I think I may take it down there on Sunday and crank it up.

.

Ahhh yes my son, come to the dark side.

Sounds like you're about where I was about a year ago. I used Marshall halfstack in my recordings, but it wasn't mine and it was a pain to haul gear to the band space just to record guitar tracks. So I started looking for alternatives. I always and already knew that Marshall has the sound for me, but I tried to find it with smaller, different amps. Long story short..and you know this....I now have my own 100w Marshall halfstack plus an additional 2x12 cab. Yeah, it's big and loud and overkill for home recording, but if you wanna sound like a big loud Marshall, use a big loud Marshall.

The vid is funny. He spend more time explaining his set up than playing. Yet when he does play it's as underewhelming as a Big Mac straight from the microwave.

Yes, indeed.
I am looking at amps and keep coming across the EVH stuff.
I realize now that there is a whole subgroup of guitar players struggling to exactly ape his tone.
I came across this Japanese site that has this whacky drawing of his pedal board with explanation.
Unless he has secret wires running under the board to throw off the spies, it doesn't even make sense.

Eddie Van Halen's Guitar Sound in the 1st album

I have no interest in aping some other guitar player's tone.

Even the Class 5's look like only a temporary fix.
What do you think Greg?
I do have a lot better chance of sneaking a 5w Marshall in the house than a half stack.

I don't like the Class 5, but check it for yourself. I think they sound weak and kind of muddy. For just a hundred or so more you can find used DSL or JCM900 combos all day long on Craigslist or Ebay.

There's a used DSL100 head sitting at my closest GC for 599. I might haggle em down a hundred and buy it just to have.

Here's some new tone.....

This is my first serious go-round with the new delay pedal. This JCM900 will easily do rock tones all day long, so I wanted to dial it back and see how "surfy" I could get it. I like it!

So here we go....degay test

Strat bridge p/u > JCM900 w/ TC Electronics Flashback Delay in the efx loop > 1960a 4x12 w/ Celestion G12T-75's > SM57 halfway to edge > Reaper > No EQ or processing in Reaper
Presence - 3
Bass - 5
Mid - 6
Treb - 6
Preamp gain - 2
Sensitivity gain - 0
Master Vol - 3

I went to the local shop today, played the Class 5 combo and it followed me home.
They also had a Vox 1x12 greenback cab that got in the car too.
I worked them for 15% off both and got out the door under $700 total.

nice ..... congrats ............... now let's hear it!!

Discuss tones.
Post some tones up, if you like.
But please don't poop in the tone thread.

Are you SERIOUS dude? That was the whole reason I posted. 4 pages and no tone. The whole reason I loved the original tone thread. The whole reason I posted my tones there. The reason I bothered to participate. You had no problems with goofy youtube clips, funny madcap gifs, jokes, playing corner, talking about artists you love, who you don't. Gear you wanted to buy, might buy, had already bought. POT - KETTLE - BLACK. You want to bust my balls - fine, go ahead.

Congrats on the amp sambo. Sounds cool. Look forward to hearing it.

Now you beeyatches check my tone.

Chuck,
I misread your posts, my bad, sorry about that.

Greg,
I'm at work, so I'm going to wait till I get home to some better speakers tonight and listen to it proper.
I can't wait. ;)

Cool Sam, that's weird, I almost pulled the trigger on the EVH cab, but decided to buy the Randall cab I linked for you.....I think the Greenback will be a better speaker for me right now. I still plan on buying another cab with a V30 eventually, but for now, it's a Greenback.......

Let us hear the little Marshall ran through the Greenback dude, I may pick up one of those heads before too long.....That's my plan anyway, I've got the ball rolling (finally) with the cab, another month or so, & I'll pick out a head for it.....But for now, I'll just use my Blackstar, as it sounds ok, & the Greenback cab should be a huge improvement.......

One more shift & I get 9 days off......

Enough surf in that tone for me to get bored & wax?
Good surf sound Greg. Psychosurbilly rules!

It's real good Greg, it sounds great through my monitors, but a little thin (tinny?) in my headphones, maybe more bass.
I went with a Hardwire DL-8 for my delay, but I do have the Hall of Fame Reverb, TC Electronics makes nice stuff.
I'm always listening for how people use their delay, you've done a good job there.
Sounds like there is a new song in the works...

That's great that you get some time off.

The little amp is discontinued, and I live in cramped quarters, so it was meant to be...
It sounds great! If I ever get some more living space, maybe a room to put my stuff in (it's all in my small living room right now)
I would like to get a big Marshall. I really do like the way they sound.

The greenback will afford a lot of different options between the vox 15 amp and the marshall 5.
I went with the 12m greenback because it looks like it is the most different from the alnico.
It didn't sound great in the store (I plugged it into the Class 5 and a Vox 4 watt head and I found it
a bit flabby in the 3 minutes I played around with it) but it is going to help me learn a lot about different speakers and tone.

I think it will sound great when I get it dialed.
I hope to get some tones recorded this weekend, I'm taking everything to a space
where I can crank it up. I think I'll bring my laptop and mic too.

This amp and speaker stuff is the fun part.

Thanks Ray and Sam. I've still got more dialing in to do. I'm pretty happy with that result though for shits and grins. I just came up with that little riff on the spot, so maybe I'll turn it into something.

A big amen to that, and this coming form a HUGE Eddie fanboi. I know the "signature" series guitars with artists' names on them are usually a step or two up from stock, but same principle...I want the Dale O'Brien guitar and gear setup, not some other famous guy's signature guitar or amp; that's old news and already been done.

Nice. I can't remember if your 900 model has hi and low sensitivity inputs, but you're still getting a little growl on the chords. Low sens. input would clean that up if you have it. The delay sounds really good. Surf is one of my favorite musical styles, one that never seems to grow old on me no matter how many times I listen. :rockin:
