You made money though. Most of us local level giggers don't make 600 bucks in one year of gigs. :laughings:
yeah ...... I do surprisingly well ..... this time of year is slow but during the summer I'll pull in around 4 grand a month.

Of course, I work hard ....... but so what? ...... so does miner and you and anyone else that works for a living.

I think musicians that whine about how hard it is to carry their gear and play for four hours are pussies. :D

There was a drumber at a 6 night a week house gig I did during the early 80's who constantly complained about how rough it was and how, if he could just get a good day gig he'd quit in a second.
So he got a nice construction gig as an operator running SkyTracs and generators and such. Easy gig really ..... he lasted a week!

:laughings:

I'll admit that I would not, do not want to be a 6 nights a week drummer. Not with one kit anyway. If it were a steady gig at one respectable venue and I could just leave a kit there that would be totally okay. The pay would have to be really ridiculously good though for me to lug one kit back and forth and set up/tear down every single night. The transport isn't what sucks for me. You gotta do that with any instrument. A long gig isn't a problem either. I have the stamina of ten thousand men. It's the setting up and tearing down. I really hate that part. It's so tedious and monotonous and I absolutely hate it. Part if it is my own doing because I meticulously keep everything broken all the way down and in cases. Most drummers just throw their shit in their trunk and it's mostly good to go. Not me. I take care of my shit, but that makes it take longer to deal with. One of my favorite things about playing guitar live now is the quick setup. I'm loaded in and up and running in 5-10 minutes.

right ..... but you don't hate it 'cause you're a pussy that doesn't want to work hard ..... you hate it just because you hate it , know what I'm saying?

It's not because you're too weak and easily tired out that makes you hate it. It's just a chore you dislike.

If you HAD to because it was how you supported your family you'd do it and wouldn't whine about the work level at all.

I'm just talking these pussies that moan about how hard it is and they're SO tired .........

I understand completely that for many people playing music is fun first and things that aren't fun lessen the experience so why do it?
But that's a different thing than some lazy old fart that brings shitty sounding gear to a gig because it's small and they're too lazy to care.

And really .... 4 grand a month is significant money ..... that's 48k a year ....... I'm betting there's a LOT of jobs out there that are a lot harder even than what I did Sat. that don't pay as much.

Bob, once again, you're living the dream dude....you know, I literally crawl around on my hands & knees to make my living (through mud, water, shit, piss, whatever....honestly & truthfully on that, there are no "porta-potties" in the mine where I work, everybody just pisses where they need to, & if they gotta shit, they do go to the return side of the mine, but, eventually, we'll all be there too, so....not trying to be nasty or anything, just being honest man), have done so for almost 24 years now (March 21st of this year will make me 24 years officially....but I worked for/with my Dad in a mine he ran for almost a year from about age 17 until I turned 18...), & will continue to do so probably until either I'm dead, or I'm not physically able anymore (the latter is what happened to my Dad btw, he had to stop mining because of it, heart trouble (5 heart attacks, open-heart surgery in '01)....and guess what, you make almost as much as I do man....

What I mentioned above is just one thing I have to watch out for while I'm in there too.....the average clearance in the mine I work at is about 48" (I have worked in mines that was only 26-28" believe it or not)...we're in there about 2 miles, so, I'm under the whole mountain, at all times....then, the equipment is moving around in there, 10-15 ton cars whizzing around, 10 ton scoops whizzing around, with people running/operating those that might not be all there (seriously, dumb-asses or strung out on drugs...or both....pretty common in my workplace to be honest...) & can't see you because it's so low...Everything & anything in there can either kill or maim in a heartbeat.....To be honest, I'd much rather crawl through a pile of shit not knowing it, than get ran over & smashed by a shuttlecar or scoop....I know there are dangers in what you do too though, look at all the people who drink & drive, that are around where you travel constantly....Look how many idiots have been shooting up public places in the last few years....Everything you do has some kind of danger level....

The pay/$$$ you make is a lot more than I expected to be honest though....I average $1000-$1200/week, before taxes, after taxes, well, take about 30% of that away before I even see it....But, I do get monthly bonuses ($100/week, paid at the end of every month, usually it's $400, but sometimes it's $500, if it's a long month....but if I'm late or miss a day, I lose the $100 for that week....late or miss again in the same month, & I lose it all for that month), production bonus ever other week (which maxes out at $300 per half/2-week period, same thing as the monthly bonus, kinda....late or miss, you lose half....late or miss x2, you lose it all for the month...), & we have pretty decent insurance (which is a blessing....my wife's had 3 surgeries in the past 2 years, very fortunate to have insurance) which all tallied up does come out to more than 48k a year, last year, I made 80k before taxes, so, if you're making 48k with no tax cuts, playing music that's your love & passion, my hat's off to you man, again, you're living the dream....

Back when I was in bands, the average pay per member, per night was about $50....On "big" shows/gigs, we'd make more, like a New Year's thing or something (I remember New Year's Eve of 2000 turning into '01) I made $300 that night, but, that was just that one night a year....We'd play the county fair every year, & that paid pretty good, IIRC it was like $150/night, & we did 3 nights that week, but, those 2 gigs were only once a year, the rest of the year we made $50 a night per member...So again, if you're making that much $$$ playing music, my hat's off to ya dude, I know I keep saying "you're living the dream", and you are, but I also know that you're busting your ass doing it too......I'm actually pretty surprised by how much you make to be honest, and again, my hat's off to ya dude, I could only dream of doing what you do for a living.....Very, very cool man, & you should be fuckin' proud.....

Greg: Thanks so much dude, I know I've been a big pain in the ass asking all this shit, but it's gonna help me improve on the drum shit in the long run.....I do have some real drums on my hard-drive that I mixed for a band about 3 years ago, but I ended up replacing basically 100% of the shells, left the oh's & hi-hats simply because I couldn't replace 'em good enough to suit me (it would have been way too much time & work for what I was making for mixing the 5 song EP).....In short, the playing performance was really good, but the recording was pretty terrible to be honest...

Cool man, if I don't hear anything by the time I leave for work (1 pm here), I'll send you a pm when I head out the door....No hurry at all, I'm just really curious to hear your raw drums, & how much bleed you've got before any editing or processing of any kind.....Thanks dude!!!!!!!

Yeah 48k a year is significant money from playing music in today's landscape. And I know for a fact there are no original material members of bands making money like that.

And yeah I'd do it in a second if it were to support my family and you're right, setup/teardown is just a chore I dislike. It's not tiring or hard or anything. I'm definitely not one to bring smaller or shitty gear to a gig because it's easier to deal with. It's not laziness. I do it, it's just my least favorite part of gigging. Even at home, my drums are sitting here in their cases because I just don't feel like setting them up because I hate it so much. Lol. I play the shit out of them once they are set up, I just need to get there. And I'm owing people some tracks, so I need to get my ass in gear.

Greg ...... yes, that's exactly what I meant. I respect the hell out of you man and I know for sure there's no wussy in the Greg.
And yeah, those guys that only want to play their original stuff and sneer at anyone that plays covers don't make squat. If I had it in my mind that I would only do my original stuff I'd have a day job and just record until I got tired of it and just didn't bother anymore and be all bitter that the music world didn't recognize my greatness!
:laughings:
I see that all the time ....... and they usually never become really good players. Down in the trenches is where you can really learn how to play if you care to.

minerman ....... well, I don't actually make 48k here in Florida .... more like 30k because the winter months are slow here. But I do make 4,000 to 4,500 during my busy months.
In Louisiana where there's a music scene I could do that all year long but Florida is a shithole.

However the last couple of summers from June 1st to Sept 15 I've done around 95 solo gigs plus a couple with bands. At 150-200 per solo gig plus anywhere from 40-100 in tips I do pretty good. If I could get that much work the rest of the year I'd do it in a heartbeat. It'd be tiring sure ....... but look at how tiring your job is.
That's why I laugh at players who whine about their work ....... guys like you do real work.
I've seen quite a few shows about mining and it looks hard and scarey as shit. I'm not sure I'd even want to go into a mine ........ I'm not comfortable with being confined like that.
You have a seriously hard and, to me, frightening job.

And yes, I do know and am grateful for having been able to spend my whole life doing this thing I love so much.
:)

Bob: Again dude, I know you bust your ass, but you're living the dream....for me anyway....I told the wife we were packing up & moving to Florida so I could play music for a living....LOL....She said she's ready....LOL.....I can see us now, loaded up, driving down the interstate with all my little gear, her clothes, makeup, & all the high-maintenance shit she has to have, with all of our cats in tow with us....LOL....I'd love to do what you do man, but in reality, it ain't gonna happen...

On the mining thing, it's just a way of life for me man, it's in my blood, I'm a 3rd generation miner (probably 4th or 5th truth be known), & it's all I've ever really done....It is "hairy" sometimes, but, I gotta do what I gotta do, just like everyone else....

Again, you should be proud man, I know I would be...My hat's off to ya Bob...

Greg: Don't forget to Dropbox those raw tracks sometime today man, & I'm gonna send you 3 tracks before I leave (in about an hour) for you to listen & evaluate if/when you get time....I see you mentioned you owe some guys some tracks, so I'm figuring you'll be busy, just do those couple/few little things for me when you get time, & I'll take it from there dude....I really, really appreciate all your help/input on this, hopefully, all of it will show in my songs when I get 'em done.....Thanks again....

miner .... we've got all the cats you'll ever need waiting for you!

Are you anywhere near Kentucky?

What really gets me are the bands that "tour" in their van from city to city and make no money. WTF are you idiots doing? They're losing money is what they're doing. I get it, every band thinks their "tour" is this glamorous rite of passage, life on the road, blah blah blah, and they think they will make hoards of fans everywhere they go. Guess what dummies, the reality is that you are playing to empty clubs and no one will remember you when you're gone. The reality is you eat maybe one taco a day and spend your nights in a fucking van. The reality is you'll be very lucky to just break even. I know it's this way. I talk to touring bands all the time. I was in one of these touring bands a long time ago. It doesn't change. Only the big huge mega acts have life good on the road. The little guys that book these idiotic "tours" to spread out and create a following are staying broke and going nowhere.

man .. I SO agree with all of this.

First off ..... calling a little swing thru a few cities a 'tour' is pretentious and shows you don't know what the word tour means.

I see bands doing 4 or 5 shows and callingl it a 'tour' and it's not.

Staying out on the road for months is a tour and even then, unless it's big time, I wouldn't call it touring. I'd call it 'being on the road'.

I do realize language and terminology changes over time but calling a brief 2 city swing a tour immediately starts my inner laughter roaring as I try to hide my reaction. :laughings:

By that standard I was 'on tour' from around 1972 'till the mid 80's. :D

If you stay out for at least a month and travel thru at least 7 or 8 states I'll accept the term tour even though, to me, it's still not a tour unless you're a moderately successful band that's in demand.

Bob: Well, those cats ain't our "babies" dude, we've got a few that we've raised from birth, our oldest being almost 14 years old....just wouldn't be the same dude....yeah, they're aggravating sometimes, & yeah, a lot of people don't like 'em, but, again, they're like a part of the family...LOL...

Google Dryden, VA dude, I can be in Harlan, KY in about 30 mins from here....I grew up in a little town called St. Charles, VA, which is right on the VA/KY border....I can walk to the top of the mountain behind my parents house & see the lights from Harlan...

Greg: I've fucked around & ran outta time on uploading those tracks dude, so I'm just gonna wait on that part....if/when you get time, just Dropbox your raw tracks sometime dude, no biggie either way, just trying to get my fake drums to sound more real...

It's been a great, unexpected vacation guys, but I'm out the door in a few minutes, back to work....See you all in about 10-12 hours...

.
then you should consider coming to jamfest in Sept. ....... a bunch of board members (some older ones that don't hang here anymore ..... some current and some from another board) get together right near Ashville Kaintucky where they have a really nice covered stage built in a valley.
It's basically a 3 day pop festival with no audience ..... just players and families. Everyone brings their gear ..... we stick it ALL up there ... :D .... and can play till 5 in the morning if we wish.
No one around and not even phone reception last time I was there.
The musicianship level ranges from low moderate to high moderate level players so it's at a very comfortable level for players who don't get to 'sit in' very often.
And I basically play with everyone up there the entire time!
I can't even eat 'cause I'll take a break and whoever's up will go, "Where's Steve?" So I get my calories from Capt. Morgan ............. :D

It's really awesome ..... greg's gonna tell you it's horrible but that's just 'cause he'd like to come hang with me but it's a bit too far! :)

I've been to 3 ....... an extremely cool thing. Plenty of room for camping if you wish ..... lots of great food being cooked on site and even a porta potty.
Personally I get a cheap hotel room about 20 minutes away 'cause I ain't no camper but a lot of the guys camp out ..... nice and cheap.

Anyway ...... when I get an opportunity I'll PM ya' some info and pics. I think we're doing it Sept 26-28 this year but I'll have to dbl check.

I went to two of BBQJoe's westfests in AZ, 2008 & 2009, and they were both fun as shit. That was mostly the A&A crew and I haven't been to that site in years so I have no idea if it still happens. I don't think I'd be welcome at another one. Those guys don't like me too much. Lol. The Jamfest in Ky is equally far, but that isn't my crowd. I'm not online friendly with most of those people. :laughings:

Westfest was less about the music though and more about just hanging out in the desert. We played some music, but mostly we stayed away from BBQJoe playing Mustang Sally over and over. And that horrendous "I got a little change in my pocket going jingalingaling" whatever that song was. Joe played that shit non stop. Ugh. And do not, under any circumstances, eat his vile ass food. I don't care how hungry you get. Do not eat at Joe's. We learned our lesson the first year. The second year we drove up the road to the Wikieup Trading Post and ate there. :laughings:

Yeah, Joe's chops are kinda limited. He has a certain number of songs he can do and that's about it.

As for Eat At Joe's ...... he's closing his restaurant right now as we speak.
I'm a little surprised to hear his food sucks but that may explain why his restaurant hasn't done well.

And you're right ...... the fests are more about hanging with each other. Last year apparently they got out some machine guns and had a shoot the shit outta things day away from the stage area.
Personally I like playing more than anything else so I stay there. Isn't that odd considering how much I play?
I'm not sure if I love music or it's an OCD disorder.

The second year I went I saw a close out on those little glow-in-the-dark bracelets and necklaces. The ones where you break the inner vial and shake them?
I brought about 60 of them and we put them on dogs and people and kids and shit ..... you could see all these little green glows running around in the dark ..... it was way cool.

I like silly things like that ...... I'm easily entertained.
The first year I went one evening there was a HUGE cloud of fireflies. I've never seen anything like it ...... they were a closely spaced cloud from about 4 or 5 feet up to maybe 10 feet high and it totally filled the clearing extending into the trees ....... it was one of the most awesome things I've ever seen.

"Oh look .......... a shiny!"

:D

Wow, that sucks about Joe. The guy is an inbred retard and his food is shit awful, but I certainly don't wish that on him. I don't know for sure, but I do believe he gave it an honest 100% effort. I guess literally being in the middle of nowhere isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

yeah, he has some desert property that he calls Fort Joe and he and the wife are withdrawing to there. They may do some traveling ...... he's not sure.
He had the restaurant for 9 years and the stress was killing him ...... he got kinda militia-compound angry for a while so he's prolly better off without the place.

He was always a little unhinged and psychotic. And he has no teeth. How the fuck do you trust a guy with no teeth? It's not the 1800s anymore. Brush your fucking teeth, Joe!
