pretty cool!In other news, I did a gig last night and our very own antichef came out to see it. How awesome is that?
I used the Hallmark 60 Custom, the Plexi RI, and the 1960A. My ears are still ringing.
Steve: You ever make a decision on an interface??? Just wondering man, keep me informed, & I'll do what I can to help....
I think Steve did a great job on the amp, even better, he handled the situation a lot better than I would've....
Ok, another T-75 tone, going for some old-school stuff....same mic positions as yesterday, really liking that mic behind the speaker...
LP > X3L (Rat emualtion) > DSL > T-75 > '57 & C1
Set the "Rat" pedal to just slightly boost the amp (you can hear the clean part toward the end....)
DSL:
1w mode
Green channel
Bass: 10
Mid: 4
Treble: 7
Deep: On
Tone Shift: Off
Vol: 10
Gain: 10
Excuse the piss-poor shitty playing, just a quick-n-dirty tone test.....as usual, ran out of time....gotta run....
Here is a first test run on the new sparrow.
I used the same amp model as i did for the last tone i posted only tweaked as best i could. Spoiler Alert: i have been jammin all night so this may sound good to me now after fiddling with it all night, but i will probably barf a little bit when i hear it tomorrow. Who knows.
I think quite possibly my bridge p/up may need to go down into its home a bit? it sounds pretty bottom heavy for a bridge only position?
It plays like a freakin dream, it feels really solid. Pretty sure i can feel every chord resonating up to my elbows. The g-string stays in tune so much better than on my Epi or My Gibson the strings are a little further apart and i am liking it actually quite a bit more than i had thought i would, though it is clear i need to accommodate for that until i get a feel for it. So far the only thing i can objectively find fault with is that i am not used to the full bottom end on it that my ears are picking up. Too many years of "stock" p/ups ? Or maybe tinker with the height of the p/up. Difficult to judge with out a proper amp.
Clip is a riff from a Hot Water Music song.
Steve: Cool man, keep us updated on your journey dude, & remember, we're here to help....Hope you can get a little out of the interface I sent to help you with the $$$...
Ok, here's a shitty clip just fuckin' around today, had the monitors up loud so I could get some feedback....
LP > SD-1 > DSL-1 > T-75 > '57 & C1
I didn't even tune the guitar & you can hear it went waaay out at the end, but, fuck it, just killing time before work.....
One of my favorite albums of all time man, "2112" was a big influence on me musically as a youth....First time I heard it, I was 13, & had ditched school (my first year of high school, told Mom I was sick that day...I had some kick-ass pot I'd bought the day before, so I stayed home, got stoned, & listened to Rush..LOL), had the house to myself & was able to turn their stereo up loud (Mom & Dad had a killer home stereo when I was at home...I used to give 'em a hard time saying "you know you guys are gonna ruin that stereo system playing that shitty country music on it, right???"..LOL....I had a dual cassette boom box my parents had bought me for Christmas the same year, & had made a copy of a buddy's tape....I still remember that day like it was yesterday dude, that's been 30 years ago now, it was pretty close to this time of year too....wow, time does fly by...Attention all planets of the Solar Federation, we have assumed control.
Thanks man, you know, all the times I've listened to that album, this is actually the first time I've ever tried to play anything off it??? Sure, the album influenced me to be a guitar player, but again, I'd never tried to play any of it...I'm sure you can tell by the shitty playing....Ha good song choice there. I like it, you captured it great, but there's something about that X3 thing that I'm not crazy about. It adds kind of like a blanket over the whole thing. It's not dark or muddy or anything, it just has like this midrange compression on it or something. The last little bits without the "Rat" sound much more open and dynamic to me.
Plexi???? Wow dude, thanks...LOL...If I had the space to have one, I'd buy a Plexi, to me, they're the amp from Marshall....all my heroes used one, but, there's no way I could use one here right now....I'd thought about getting the 1w version, but, I'm gonna hold off for a little while & see what the future brings....we may be buying another house before too long, just have to play the waiting game & see....Thanks again...This one's pretty cool. Nice creative way to get some feedback. Lol. This has an angry cranked Plexi kind of sound to it.
For the life of me, I can't dial that "honk" out of the X3L dude, I've tried everything I can think of, but it's still there...I'd considered getting rid of the X3L, & getting something else, as to be honest, there are only a handful of the fx that are useable with one amp for me, but using it with 2 amps, could be a stereo thing, and/or, a different patch for each side/amp....I really only keep that thing to be able to run my Line 6 vst's in Reaper (I need it connected via USB as a dongle or the vst's won't work....there's a new version of 'em that don't require the "dongle" to be connected, but I've read a lot of people have had lots of issues, so, if it ain't broke), the vst's are pretty nice in Reaper to be honest, using the mix knob (on each plugin) & the mix button/knob in Reaper's gui (at the top of each plug-in), they can sound quite nice with my recorded tracks IMO...
Are you talking about a Line 6 X3 Live?
Yep, I've had that thing for about 4-5 years now, & while some of the fx are ok with my amps, it just sucks the tone out of 'em....
Dunno if he'd want me to say anything or not, but Steve bought the Pre-Sonus interface today, & is looking for a laptop...Shouldn't be too much longer that we'll be able to hear a proper recording of his amp....I bet that thing is a killer, & I'm actually really curious to hear what it really does sound like....
I was just coming here to say that, man. Not only did I get it, I got the limited "gold" edition! lol!
I don't think I can install it on my computer because I only have XP and not XP SP3??? I'm going to just go ahead and look for a used laptop with at least 2 GB of RAM (hopefully 4GB) and windows 7. It's compatible with Vista, but I've heard too many horror stories. Yeah, we'll see how it goes...
Shan, all your clips say "track is currently not available".![]()
hah - my ears are still ringing too. The band was killer and the hallmark/plexi sounded amazing. It's too bad the group on this board is so geographically dispersedIn other news, I did a gig last night and our very own antichef came out to see it. How awesome is that?

I wouldn't even try to avoid using EQ or gain staging on that X3 or any other hardware modeler because: the way to think of a POD or similar type thing is to think of it as an amp. You wouldn't hesitate to turn the treble knob on a Fender Deluxe if you were using one ......... same thing with a POD or X3 or anything like that. Get the sound the best you can before going to Reaper just like you would with an amp. Actually, if I were using a virtual amp in a sim I'd still EQ it the best I could before tracking. In an ideal world it might save me having to use an EQ plug in during mixing.I am not sure what the settings are like on the x3 Live but on my X3 i have this little eq thing and for the longest time i hated using it onboard, i liked the idea of cutting freq's in reaper better myself, .
Post and Discuss Guitar Tones!
Here's my first contribution.
This is not intended as a great guitar tone (it's not);
I'm just pointing out an amp / technique characteristic that I was attending to today in the interest
of perhaps discussing some of the elements of what makes up (or perhaps ruins) a good tone.
I used the same tone settings throughout the sample, however I struck the strings harder as the track evolved.
The notes at the beginning end up being pretty clean, where there is considerable breakup in the chords at the end.
A lot of amp sims demonstrate that playing the guitar with the guitar's volume turned down halfway results in clean notes,
and pleasing distortion is introduced when the guitar is turned up full.
This tone example demonstrates that a sensitive amp will also respond favorably based just on picking intensity.
I had the guitar volume turned up full for the duration of the recording.
Pardon my poor playing, this is just to illustrate the effect:

Please post some of yout tone samples and discuss, if you like.
Here are my three guitars lined out through the same "amp" The Gibson and Epiphone have older strings on them then the Sparrow does as i had it restrung yesterday so that may translate a little more crisply perhaps.
All of the recordings were done with only the bridge P-up. I played the same reduntant chord/riff structures to just paint some pictures accurately i guess. Apologies for the redundancy and lack of creativity.
I have them shared from soundcloud privately let me know if that is an issue?
Amp(sim): Hiwatt Dr-103 > 1968 4x12 Marshall Basketweave w/ Greenbacks (the number 25 is mentioned in the description? Mean anything to anyone??) Mic sim is a SM57 on axis and i have with a 53% room bleed. Also the tiniest bit of reverb on there too.
Epiphone Les Paul Std. (MiCHN), Trans Amber Flame Top, Stock (Alnico Classic ?) Humbuckers
Gibson Les Paul Junior Special (MiUSA) Deep Red, w/ Bridge and Neck Single Coil P90's
Sparrow Rat Rod Boss Black (MiCAN) w/ Kent Armstong Humbucker Pickups.
