. Maybe a couple of C414 mics for alternative overheads.

For my money Id go with KSM32 mics instead...they are the new go to instrument mics for a reason.

If I was going to ever go with just one mic...it would certainly be multipattern like a KSM44...AT4050...or C414...my fave of the three is the KSM44...much sweeter than the C414.

As much as the C414 has proven a staple / work horse, I'm not a fan of the AKG website. There's not enough hours in a single day to navigate that site over dialup. So the techie in me says not in my lifetime. Just getting to the specs on that microphone on akg.com is week long project in and of itself. For a weeks pay, I'll get something else.

AT4050 is probably my next singular mic. Although I prefer matched pairs. There's just something about a stereo image and the depth that it adds that makes everything just sound better. I guess that means that I'm not a fan of AM radio... :(

The AT4050 is a solid utility mic...and AT has tight tolerences...you are more likely to just buy 2 off the shelf and have both of them be a good stereo pair...its a good choice.

Sure. If you're spending 30 grand on mics, might as well throw a couple of those in, too. :D

Well if you look at who has switched from the C414 to the KSM32 for that useage...it makes perfect sense...Eddie Kramer says it even beats his u47s for micing instruments and overheads especially...the Steely Dan record was done using the KSM32 on instruments exclusively...these are guys who can have anything.

What would be a better improvement for my actual Mic Locer (AT4050, NTK, SM7b,2 MXL 603s,2 SM58) Blue Baby Bottle or AKC214?? Any other??

AKG214?...either would be strictly for instruments...you would be doing a bit better with a KSM32.

Need Help!

I have a $280 Budget because i sold the 3035 (it sounds similar but no better than my 4050) and a MXL4000 That i receive as a gift a few weeks ago.

I was considering:

1 KSM32
1 Octava MK-319,2 AKG C2000b
1 AKG C214
1 Blue Bluebird

are those good improvements for my mic Cabinet or should i save a little more and buy a KSM44,AKG C414 or AT4047.(I always buy Used)

the Bluebird hasnt been anyones favorite mic...its pretty though...the 214 hasnt been getting the wow factor here it should for what it is...might be because it still isnt as affordable as it could be...Im not a fan of the 319 because buying a mic that has to be modded before it is usable isnt a good decision...and the AKG2000b is a decent mic, but it isnt an improvement here.

Id look at the KSM32 for instruments and some vocals...the AT4047 would probubly become your favorite vocal mic...and its great on instruments but you cant pile on tracks like you would with the KSM32.

I might sell my AT3035 pair in favor of another KSM32 to make a stereo pair of those...but I have my eye on an AT4033 on my craigslist right now.

Thanks!

So would you recommend the 4033 over the KSM32?

Perhaps. But it is the only way to get "that" particular sound which stands apart from anything else due to the unique capsule design (mostly) and minimalist single FET -> transformer circuit (secondarily).

Actually, not all 319's were created equal. Russian quality control being what it is, two of them can sound completely different. I've got one that's box stock that I wouldn't want to mod because it might change to a perfectly good mic...that isn't that mic. It really shines on female voices.-Richie

Well there you go...It might be pretty good after the mod...but why doesnt the manufacturer pick up on the fact that everyone wants a modded version and make those changes and charge more for it?...like Im sure that Octava is aware of these mods...its like the same with the Mxl2001...without a mod everybody thinks its unusable.
When I sold my 319 to a guy...I told him about you...he had mentioned getting a mod for it.

Dont you ever do mods for mics people seem to like?...like a Studio Projects C1 or an Mxl v67...or maybe even a KSM27 or SM27...if you can make a bad mic good...couldnt you make a good one great?

They all seem to have thier strengths...it still was never really used here...just wasnt up to the task of beating out other mics in my locker...but I did sell it for 4 times what I paid for it.

oh yeah, lots! Including the C1, v67, Apex 460, MXL 603 et al. I think I've got mods for about 15 specific models that are considered OK out of the box but can be improved. And then my MJE-K47 mod suite for tube and FET mics is broadly applicable to a lot more K67-type capsule mics.

Regarding those two mics, it comes down to this - do you find the stock capsule in them to be excessively bright and / or "eshy". If you're happy with the sound leave them alone. If you'd rather have a more mid-range forward sound with less sibilance, a capsule swap to the MJE-K47 and some component upgrades will get you there.

I Increased my budget and Grabbed a 4047 for $400 I am waiting for it!

I have an old MK319 that if I had it modded it would turn it into something its not. Since its perfect now it wouldnt make sense. I aslo had another one from roughly the same era that I felt lucky to get my $99 back for it.

As to ONE mic for everything........there are a few......a very few.

Something that mics of that caliber have that a lot of these other great but utilitarian mics dont have.....I dont know what to call it, but when you hear it you know its there.

I have a decent collection of utilitarian mics and one of 'those' others. I would use it on every source and every track and never worry about the build-up of any particular 'sound'.
