The hallmark of amateur.

Drummers seem to be what makes a song flow or flop. And I am very critical on my own drum parts, like overuse of fills. As far as talent, before I start a project, I listen to the band play, and get a good idea ahead of time. If they suck, I decline the gig. I dont want my name associated with crap, even if it is recorded perfectly.

We're all great in spotting faults and mistakes. How great are we in fixing them;)?

Drummers with no meter. Drummers that can't tune their own instrument. Drummers who NEVER change their heads. Stick collisions. Drummers that play the same fill at the end of every measure (does it sound like I'm a bit harsh on drummers?):D
Oh... and add flanging/swishy cymbals due to poor mic placement.....!

um, what's wrong with behringer?

german engineering can't go wrong, can it?

i've never used any of their gear, i just wanted to know if anyone else felt like their stuff is considered amateur, or whatever.

Try German Reverse Engineering and Chineese Manufacturing. Behringer is pretty bottom barrel. Do a search on the forum and plenty should come up.

Damn! I'd never heard of that thing, and now you tell me it won't work? :(

That would be a valuable feature if perfected, especially if it corrected any performance issues which might give it away as "not Steely Dan."

:D

Mic placement is difficult when self-recording. I get both guitar mics set up just right but then I have to get up to press record. And if it sounds right in the head phones it may be wrong on the monitors.

oh.

hey what's wrong with chinese manufacturing?? heh j/k.

what does 'reverse engineering' mean?

Reverse engineering taking someone elses equipment and trying to design your product based upon the other design. Working from the outside in. I think?

It is as you say it is as far as engineering and maufaturing, but it is still put through the Germans for inspections. I think Behringer makes good "cheap" equipment for those of us that don't have the dough! Imagine this.. you got $1000, you have no rack components. What's better to do... buy one good compressor, or a Behringer compressor, effects unit, headphone amp, and a mixer????

How I stopped making my tracks sound amateur

- I cut down the guitar tracks to a maximum of four, but usually only 2 or 3 at a time. If more are needed, I'll think about as many ways of NOT adding that extra track as possible.

- practiced and practiced my instruments. If I wasn't to good at it, ie singing, keep it simple, but do it well.

- Hardly ever use effects. I never use reverb, except rarely on Guitar. Never on vocals. Just don't need it for my sort of music.

- The *Art* of compression. Getting it right......

- Good monitors. Although I'm sure my Eltax Monitor 3's could still be improved upon.

- Minimise use of EQ. Get it right BEFORE recording.

One of my faults is I do like to use a lot of hard panning...... But wasn't it Bob Hope who once said "theres only centre, hard left or hard right, no in-between." ?

I'll get over it I'm sure. :)
