You know, Tracktion's fine for me right now. A newer Cubase is coming at some point before the summer I think, but VST 5.0 is a cantankerous beast whereas Tracktion is all on one screen.

Pro Tools Free .... doesn't that have an eight track limit? What do you record after you've done your drums then?
The only way I could see using it would be to do a stereo drum track... but even with that, I am using between 14 and 20 tracks for some of my songs... 8 tracks is pretty limiting...

Eight tracks doesn't even get me through an intro! Seriously - piano, acoustic, electric, some sound effects, that's eight tracks already!

If it works the same way as full Pro Tools I'll download it though because I will be getting my hands on a full-on Pro Tools rig at uni next year (the same one that Blue Bear has been saving up to buy!!!!).

Oh, yeah!

After that, you better post some stuff... If I am still here to listen to it...

I don't know what's going to happen once I retire from the Navy...

It'll be wasted, I'm sure.

When do you retire then? And do you really have no idea what comes next?
That's a nice desk, for sure!

I retire in August. I only say that I don't know what comes next as far as my music is concerned, because I am going to be merchant mariner.... I will still be sailing much of my time...

Well, gotta run... I have to feed my kid before she breaks something!

My kid's not breaking things yet thank god! When he's hungry he just wimpers....kind of cute really; but I know the time is fast approaching! LOL

Good thing that little red beast of yours is portable ;) (But is it waterproof?)

Hmmm.... I'm getting hungry now for some reason...

*smash*

Great, now I've got that XTC song stuck in my head.

You know the one, right?

" 'Cause dad's a judge and knows exactly
What the job of judging's all about"

No Thugs in Our House...

Somehow, that DOES NOT sound like I had imagined retirement to be...

Norm - I got you!!

I went up to my folks' and ordered XP and a shiney new hard drive with 8mb cache ... I'm gonna be flying SURELY this time ... and if I'm not, then I quit recording.

I'm fast running out of excuses ... Windows should be here start of next week.

Well, in the case of military retirement, it's not really retirement at all. You just shift gears and start your second career. And since I have been sailing for more than 14 years of the last 20, it's in my blood.

But the Mr-8 is portable. I don't think I have to worry about it being waterproof, since most of the ships I will be on are large...

Sweet! :D :D :D

I am happy for you again!

Windows XP is way more reliable, and with the new hard drive.. your setup will kick ass! :D

Hmmm ... if one only has one drive with an 8mb cache, does one use it for the OS, or for the data drive?

I may be wrong, but I think the cache is for the OS to help it run smoother...

Actually, more cache will be good for anything. It is just an area, like RAM, that stuff can be stored in before it needs to move, and use resources that are not as fast. More cache=good. With only one drive having the 8mb, tough call. It may do more good as the system drive, as almost everything will need to be processed there anyway. But...

Not always a clear answer, as most know when it comes to pc's. I'm lucky to have 2 drives, both fast with 8 mb cache. I don't have to make a choice.
