How about Graham Parker & the Rumour's The Parkerilla &/or Live At The Marble Arch? the former is a tour de force with a touch of polish & the latter, a promo gig to try to get signed, I think, is rough & rady but grand.
Then again
5 Live Stiffs really is a recording of events.

Led Zep

The Song Remains the same Live album at MSG

Also Thin Lizzy

Live and dangerous.

Chicago - Chicago at Carnegie Hall
The Who - Live at Leeds

those are my two favorites

ooh what a blast from 06!
since my last reply i have recorded at least 20 live shows that capture not only the bands performance and effort, but the party that ensued at the same time and all the memories and new friendships. that kind of stuff is priceless..

Quoted for truth. His rendition of Purple Haze and Sunshine of your Love...mindblowing. :)

I'd also like to throw in Medeski Martain and Wood's "Tonic". Done totally accoustic recorded with a single stereo mic. Has to be heard to be belived.

I also have a soft spot for:
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Live Art
Phish - A Live One

"Tonic" was one stereo mic? l Wow. Wish I still had that one. ( the recording I mean... but the mic would be cool, too! )

Ooooo! Oooooo! I got one!

"Friday Night in San Fransisco" McLaughlin, Delucia, DiMiola.

Live recording is also about capturing a great performance.

Allman brother live at filmore east

Pink floyd - The wall Live from Earls court

Bob dylan manchester free trade hall 1966 (marked as the albert hall)

Theres also a Duke Ellington live in england somewhere that blew my mind...cant remember what album, but most of his live recordings are splendid.

'The Gorge' by Dave Matthews Band. Really, everything they do live is amazing, 'Listener Supported' is awesome too. But the Gorge has such good acoustics and on the DVD they say its their favorite venue.

the tragically hip "live between us" is a great album from over here in canada.

oh, and marley's "no woman no cry" (live) is one of my favourite songs of all time...even the feedback sounds good! not sure if a song counts or what the original concert sounded like overall.

No question for me. Diana Kraull Live from Paris. The sound is incredible.

not a live album as such..............but a live song on an album with an assortment of live stuff..............anyone rate Tool - Pushit (Live)? this is the version of pushit that they re-wrote for the live Aenema tour. I think Maynard's voice sounds superb on it, anyone else?

There was some discussion re live recording in the MP3 Mix Clinic with some interesting ideas re capturing the moment - "an artifact" as opposed to creating something - "a piece of recorded music".

What do you consider the best "major label release" live audio recording?

I only use "major" so that there'll be a wider range of people likely to have heard & therefore be able to enter commentary on, any particular recording.

To start the ball rolling I offer the LP mix/master of the Concert for Bangladesh - particularly While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

I recently bought the DVD & much prefer the plastic version.

Made in Japan - Deep Purple

I really like the way Rush in Rio sounds. Kind of has that "sitting in the 12th row" sound and feel to it.

So I think my list would be:

Rush in Rio
Iron Maiden - Rock in Rio
Pink Floyd - Pulse
The Eagles - Live in Melbourne

There are a lot actually. I think Dream Theater's "SCORE" sounds pretty freakin good, too.

That's my 2 cents.
