The BEST EVER Live Recording

Oh yeah... Rainbow - Rainbow On Stage... There's another...
 
I gotta agree with:

- Deep Purple - Made in Japan
- Rainbow - On Stage
- Yanni - Live at the Acropolis

There's this band from Argentina called "Rata Blanca", their live CD "Poder Vivo" (Live power) sound un-fucking-believable!!!
I know there wasn't any overdubs 'cause it was going to be recorded at a show, but they didn't like the takes, so they recorded another show for a double CD, but there was a noise leaking into many of the songs so they only used the songs that sounded good and ended up being a single CD. I know the guitar player/band leader, he is very orthodox in this subject and would never overdub a live album...

Yessongs.. YOU COULDN't BE MORE DEAD ON ABOUT THE QUALITY!!! They are my favorite band (don't hate me for it people) and I really wish I could hear it all in full effect... Damn dvd costed so much.. I didn't expect lofi picture and sound....ARGH!!!

P.S. I made an audio cd of it anyway ;)

I have both the Yessongs DvD and the double Album, wich offcourse was released way before the Dvd.
It might be in my head but I think the dvd made it sounding way worse than the album.
Pluss dropping songs such as Heart of the sunrise and prepetrual change from the set is a huge crime as well.
I couldent belive my ears when I first heard them pulling through that blending of to melodies in the end, with the fast funky riff and on to the slow power chords of the outro.

That album really is on my topshelf when it comes to preformance, + king crimsons first live album.

Jeff Buckley, Live at Sin-e. I don't think there is too much processing going on there. Just a little reverb on the vocals. It is truly live, mistakes and all. It is a tribute to his amazing talent and willingness to take chances. If you've never heard "Be Your Husband" you should check it out.
I also thought Kiss Alive was pretty cool back in the day. Another good one was Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous.

I heard they sucked live!

NoFx's "I heard they suck live" is a great recording. It really captures the live show and is great quality...and very funny.
 
live recordings

You guys got to check out Jeff Buckley's Mystery White Boy record. You won't find an overdub on it. I used to mix foh at The Vic Theatre Chicago. One day QueensRyche came rolling into town we set up the backline, lighting, and soundrig. First Song there engineer put on was a buckley track called Last Goodbye and I was like dam motherfucker that sounds titties. Ol boy said it came straight of his left right 1/3 octave eq. Thus the same sound that was going to the speaker system. He didn't mix any crowd mics in or anything. He did this every show as most foh guys do to keep themselves honest. If your in to Buckley try to find that engineer he has way more recordings that he didn't give to the record company. :eek:

Forget "live album", Live at Leeds is one of my favourite albums PERIOD. It is far and away the Who's best albums.

Neil Young's Time Fades Away is also a great live album. But then again, he took a "live" approach to studio recordings (as opposed to artists discussed above who took a "studio" approach to live recordings), so we could really count Tonight's the Night, On the Beach, or even Harvest.

Wilco's new live album "Kicking Television" sounds great and im 99% sure there are no overdubs. Since they now have 6 people in the touring band they can get a really full sound live.

I go for The Beatles Live at the Star Club Hamburg. Poor quality but those 20 or so tracks are packed with energy and that comes across well.

Or The Who (High Numbers) live at The Marquee 1964
