Hello all :)
Just wanted to start a discussion about mainstream and independent artists/producers.
My views lie in this video

I'd be interested to hear what people's views are on this subject :)

Cheers,
Jayme

Thanks man, means a lot! But what's your opinion on DIY promotion? Better/worse?

Did you do all the artwork and shooting/editing for the video?
Very nice!

Love the RIP reference to "Tom" (MySPace). :laughings:

We were just having this discussion in another thread here....that DIY, as great as it sounds (especially the part about you keeping all the money), isn't all that lucrative, easy, and as rewarding as some folks think it can be.

Look at it this way....
The DIY/Internet marketing approach has been around for awhile now...and there are MILLIONS of "artists" self-promoting.
How many are "making it" and getting rich over it...or even how many have huge fan-bases from it?

Sure, there are some who have pulled it off going DIY, but for the most part it's the artists who were already heading up the ladder that generate the most "buzz" and following. A total newb" has a VERY long, hard road to music success on any commercial scale, and that's made even more complicated by the fact that "DIY" is now available to those MILLIONS....so the competition is actually greater now than it use to be BEFORE the Internet/DIY marketing came along.....AND....there are NO "filters" any more. Everyone is an "artist" and everyone thinks they should be a star. :D

This has been my experience. I only do it for the personal satisfaction at this stage. Self publishing music online as a means to an end is futile. The internet is literally too big now, too much clutter, and too much background noise making even great independent artists throw their hands up in frustration when trying to get heard.

To further the points already mentioned, I'm simply not going to watch or comment about your video. That's the entire current state of DIY promotion in a nutshell.

By saying that you're not going to comment on it, didn't you comment on it?

LOL!

It's actually quite impressive Greg. More hours likely went into this than I have in a year. Not your style of music, but it is put together really well.

I watched the video. I thought it was good although I had a massive feeling of DeJaVu. (Has it been posted before maybe? or is it the style of video that you've copied?) Seemed somewhat familiar yet different.

As for my opinion on DIY Promotion.....I think it's like pissing in the wind.

Not personally. I've never been to satan's butthole.

I thought the video was good.
DIY marketing isn't really as easy as that, unfortunately. If you really want to make serious money playing music, you'll eventually have to start getting other people involved in distribution, etc. (Assuming you manage to sell 1,000 CDs through online self-promotion, do you really want to fulfill those orders yourself?)

But I like the sentiment of DiY, and the video was impressive. How long did that take you?
