By the way, I spoke to my friend building the cable and he said that he will be using 22 gauge cable. But he also said that when the cable gets here, he will find out whether or not he made life hard on himself or not with his cable choice. Didnt have time for him to elaborate, but I am curious.

PS. I read back and saw that you obtained another block of 4 channels for spare parts.
Would you want to sell me a plastic fader knob, and another knob that will fit on the "Solo" pot, all the way on the right of the machine? Let me know, bro. Thanks!

Hi everybody!
I am new to the forum and this is my first post.
Congrats to sweetbeats for the tascam m-520.
I have bought my M-512 one year ago and i love it for its warm sound, very good for crunchy 12bit productions.
some of the bulbs were not working so i ordered some spare ones at triplex-service.de. they are the official tascam spare parts seller over here in germany.
the bulbs come without the "pseudo-fuse-kinda-lookin'-holder-thingy" and have to be soldered.
you will have lots of fun with this mixer!
currently i am searching for one of those 4-channel-strips like you have bought sweetbeats. any suggestions where i can get those?
and, another thing i am searching for are those optional bigger side panels as seen on the white/black picture.... that would be great....!

What are you wanting to do with the 4-channel input block...just for spares?

but wouldnt it be easier to just change the whole 4 channel strip "as is"?
some weeks ago a 520 went away for 80 bucks!!!
it was good enough for spare parts and it had the optional bigger side-panels i was searching for!
but the guy didnt want to ship to europe!!!

Define "unreliable"...maybe there are tips/trick that could get those channels to offer more solid performance.
Outside of that I have a spare master section and two spare 4-channel input sections. I found them simply by doing periodic searches on the internet.
If needed, I may be able to pare a couple channel cards, but I won't know for quite awhile until after I've gone through my M520.
We'll need to just stay in touch if you want to go that route.

channel 5 and 7 won't play any sound until i rotate the red trim button all the way to the right. then the sound "breaks in" and i can return the trim to the normal (middle) position. sometimes its enough to send a massive kickdrum through these channels and they work.
but in the next session they will fail again, and so on.

The only "topboard" (the wood casing around the sides and top) I have ever seen was with an M520 that went for $150USD awhile back. Not common at all and I wouldn't expect that you would find one without the console to go with it, and I'm guessing it is even less common on the M512. Sorry to be discouraging, but I will certainly keep a lookout for one.
winz950, I would seriously try cleaning the connections on those channels first. Can you unscrew the channel 5 ~ 8 module and rotate it upside-down? I'm going through every multipin connector on my channel cards and mainboard with deoxit...I posted my procedure in an earlier post...you may simply have some oxidized connections that require a strong voltage stream to get continuity...try it...let me know if there is anything I'm saying that doesn't make sense due to whatever language barrier is present okay?

Do you have some deoxit already?
I'm not trying to push you to do something that you are uncomfortable doing. Have you ever done anything like what I am saying?
If you do go ahead with it, just keep it simple and start with one of the channels.
Would it help if I put up a video of what I'm talking about?

i will order deoxit these days, but i have seen that there is plenty of various deoxits. which one do ou use? any special product nr.?
once i opened up the "hood" (the screw under the vu meters) and saw those million connections and got kind of "how am i gonna put all these connections back together, once i dissamble everything?"
yes, a tutorial would help! not only me i think!
so you had to remove all poti caps, eq caps, etc. to remove the face panel from the channels, right?
maybe i should just beginn with cleaning the RCA jacks.
did you clean them also in the inside?

Actually, the reason I bought two of the female connectors from the place in the UK was to give one to you.
Right now I have one male (from Tascam) and two female connectors (from the UK) with hoods for all.
I am in the midst of correspondence with the folks in the UK and it looks as though they don't have in stock but have located the male connectors and can get them at about $10 my cost each. I'm going to order 3 with hoods and one more female connector with a hood. In total with shipping that will be about $50. I'm then going to return the one male connector and hood to Tascam which cost $35.
If all works out I'll have a set for me, one for you, and a spare. I've located the proper cable locally here...22AWG 20-conductor stranded non-shielded cable. I'm going to buy enough to build 3 cables. The wire is relatively cheap.
so I'll know more probably Monday and I'll keep you posted.

The type of DeoxIT I am using, based on a past recommendation, is the FaderLube.
Winz, start small. Just start with one channel. Maybe #5. Just remove one connector at a time and work in the DeoxIT. If you are just cleaning up the connections you don't even need to remove knob caps or the dress panel. Just tilt the meter bridge back like you did, remove the two screws at the top of the channel 5 ~ 8 module, and then remove the trim strip just above the wrist rest. You'll expose the bottom two screws for the channel module. Remove those and, with a little careful maneuvering, you should be able to tip the channel module up and actually turn it upside-down to get to the multipin connections on the channel card.
I won't have time to shoot and video and put it up until early next week, but I'll get to it as soon as I can, okay?

I wanted to get the whole set, but they are about $8 each!
