Tascam 48 needs help.

Maybe making a "mini pallet" type wooden frame at the top & bottom inside the outer box might be a useful idea to use, it could be strong enough IF the package was kept vertical during shipping? Or maybe just pack all four sides as well in the above way?

The most important thing is that it doesn't get shipped the "typical" way but rather that a pallet truck / forklift can only transport it. If the above 48 recorder was additionally placed and strapped onto a pallet / skid shipping platform then it would have stood a much, much greater chance of being delivered without a problem. Obviously prior to being placed on a skid, it would have needed to be packed well inside of a box. But knowing it'll go freight and only a pallet truck or forklift will touch it, makes for a much safer ride. In fact, if items continue to be sent without this method, a person is really asking for problems. But then we already know this ;)

So Rufer,
Have you had a chance to open it up? I anxiously await the verdict on the insides.

I opened it up and all is now right in the world. Thanks to all who helped. Nothing was broken inside. The PCBs are all still solid.

The problem was, and forgive me if I word this wrong, the reel table assembly was pushed too close to the motor on the shaft causing the reel table to get caught on the bar behind it. I was able to adjust it and now its free and working as it should.

The problem that remains is, none of the vU lights will illuminate. They do measure input signal and even the red clipping lights light. But the ordinary illumination is not working. I'll have to ask the seller if it was always like this.

Thanks again.

Matt

Matt, good that you got it going. What you had found is further evidence of a strictly shipping / packing related issue, the 48 not being protected from violent vibrations, multiple impacts etc..... Follow the cable, very closely, which attaches to the VU meters and check if something came undone there as well. All VU meter lights not working is unusual, unless a main connection was terminated to all of them, whether on the PCB or the connector or wires. Check again very carefully. If you have the service manual, follow the connections.

Good work, Matt... that's a fairly common shipping related condition. If a package lands on the top of the box the reel tables get pushed in.

I actually had a joker ship a Tascam 22-2 reel-to-reel face down in the box with only a thin piece of foam as padding. The reel retainer pins were bent over like nails and the tables were pushed back all the way… what a mess. :(

I hope this ends up being your only major problem. Those VU lamps eventually burn out, but if all eight of them are out I would check fuses and trace the main circuit supplying current for the lights.

:)

Glad you were able to fix the 48, that's a common problem, be sure to adjust the reel-table correctly, check from the side with tape loaded so there is no rubbing against the reel-flange on Play function.

Thanks. While I got the reel tables fixed, I brought the machine in for a good base-line servicing. I want to know that I'm starting with the machine in the best condition it can be. I figure I can take my time and learn how to allign it myself when that time comes.

Has anyone racked a 48? How many rack spaces does it take up?
I'm thinking of going with an angled-top rack. Would the depth of the deck preclude me from racking equipment below the deck where the angle stops? Maybe it depends on the depth of said equipment?

Thanks again.

Matt
