What is that?

Looks like it might be "sticky shed syndrome"...older Ampex 456 tape.

Try it with a new tape or a newer reel of 456 manufactured after 1995.

Cheers! :)

So you think it could just be the tape I am using? I will give that a try. Any advice on where I could get some 1/2" tape?

I'm not sure of where to buy new tape in your area of the world. I have a local retailer who sells RMG/Emtec tape. They are an old fashioned brick and mortar store but they do have a website: http://www.tele-tech.ca/

SM-911 is a bias compliant +6 tape, same as 456.

Cheers! :)

Yes,...

I agree up front that it's likely the tape,... Ampex 456, which in most cases has gone sticky and in minor cases causes very high and uneven friction.

However, after replacing with new tape, if it continues bear in mind there are forward and reverse reel tension adjustments on the 38. After having some transport related problems some 10-15 years ago, I went through the reel tension adjustments with excellent results making a huge difference. It's my opinion that many of these similarly aged units will require the tension adjustments, and being out of spec will exacerbate any sticky shed problem and head wear overall. Note the reel tension adjusments takes a precision spring scale, see manual.

Start with the tape first, Bro, then proceed from there!
:spank::eek:;)
