That's not all, 'cause I still have the TASCAM M30 and 244 boxed up, not to mention my LXP-1 and DBX 118 / Microlimiter etc... ;)
But where's your Soundcraftsman graphic EQ w/ cut-out cardboard curve setting templates? :D

Wow, you got some minty decks there:rolleyes:

Hey guys,

I used to browse and post these forums some time ago (used to look quite different from now!) and am now in need of some help before I go insane!

I'm currently undergoing this exact same procedure and I've successfully replaced the belt on my 34B but did not know about realigning the capstan solenoid plunger.

Does anybody have any info on how to do this? As I reassembled the front panel, threaded a tape and played it then after hearing some odd distortion checked the tape path and saw the tape grinding past the heads and realised the lifters were up way higher than usual during playback.

I have some pictures too if it'll help.

The transport & lifters in the Play position

And from the side

In the Stop position with lifters down

The solenoid and pinch roller in Stop mode

And with pressure applied until it goes no further (same as in Play mode), note the fairly loose spring in both pictures

Apologies for digging up an ancient thread!

And I've just read in another thread that after removing the solenoid, realigning requires a spring scale to measure the precise force exerted, are they expensive? :(

I'm just about to try and replace the capstan belt on my 34b. I got the front panel off OK, and it looks as though lifting the head assembly might be all that is needed to access the belt. I sure hope so, but from Tim's advice above, it might be a bit more complex. Has anyone got any feedback on this please?

Does anyone know of a good source for these belts?

I just got the machine (not working) as a swap for some unwanted gear so it hasn't cost much so far. It's a very cool thing to have, that's for sure. But the heads and guides are very badly worn. I haven't been able to try playing or recording as yet, but the heads look as though they would damage the tape very quickly. Has anyone had experience with resurfacing the heads (or replacing them)?

Thanks
Stewart

I just bought a 3440 belt on ebay for about £10. i think the same guy had belts for 34s.

Yeh, i duno how good or bad the belts are, but mine arrived this morning with a postage refund (he found a cheaper service), and a lovely personal letter.
Fitted and working; I'm happy.

Thanks for the feedback Paul. Do you have a link for that supplier? The only one I have found was double the price.
BTW - great website you have.
Cheers

Thanks :) I just update it myself from a basic format that a friend laid out for me.

Is this what you're tooking for?
It says it fits 34 and 34b.

Thanks for all e advice re belts for 34B.
I've come across a terrific company: Roland Vintage-Audio. The guy who runs it is Rolande Legrande and he seems to specialise in old TASCAM gear. Lots of new and used parts. Fantastically fast friendly personal response too. The 34B belt was 12.50 Euros, posted the same day. Check his site if you can. If you search for roland-vintage-audio you will probably find it.
Cheers
Stewart
