Some time ago… 2 or 3 years ago I think, the VU meter stopped working on Channel 3 on my Tascam 246. I ended up replacing it with a meter element from a parts machine… an old Realistic TR-3000 (Same as Teac X-3). It worked fine for a long time, though I don’t use it much these days. I powered it up tonight and that same VU meter is dead again. It’s not the bulb, but the meter itself. It’s not moving though signal is perfectly fine during record and playback. I’m thinking perhaps there was nothing wrong with the meter I removed before and just the process of opening the unit and moving things around fixed it.
So now I’m getting ready to take it apart again (It’s a PITA) and wondering if anyone here has seen anything like this on the 244 or 246. I’ve not heard of any common issues or fixes for the VU’s on these units, but I thought before I scrubbed up for surgery I’d run it past you guys to see if you’ve run across the same issues or have any ideas. Thanks!
I’ve had this unit since new and in every other way it’s in like-new Smithsonian condition. When moving it around over the years I’m sure I cradled it with as much TLC as I did my first-born. It’s never been bumped, dropped, whacked or even looked at funny.
