Hey man, it's a free country. America, that is. Canada, I dunno. Quebec, not even Canadians can figure that out. Montreal? Qui sais?

This is like arguing that crackers are Saltines, not white people :p

I'm a microphone producer, but only cause I can't spit hot fire :(

You're sooooo obsessed with Quebec, it's hilarious. :) I don't even know any Canadians that are that obsessed with about it. I guess ignorance breeds contempt. :D :D :D

I'm surprised you can type with such a big chip on your shoulder, you angry little man. You need to watch your blood pressure. Hehe.

:p

Hey, give him a break! He is from North Carolina!

I don't even know what that means, but I can tell you that I have only been there once and it was one of the weirdest moments of my life!

That's like saying a little leaguer can't call himself a baseball player because the guys in the MLB have "spent years learning their craft"

Who really cares, honestly? What someone calls themselves shouldn't bother you.

wrong, it would be like a little leaguer calling himself a pro ball player.

Au contraire, j'aime Quebec. I've been there a couple of times, not just Montreal, but cool little towns like St-Jean-sur-Richelieu. I dig it :p

My blood pressure is getting a little high though. I need to eat more bananas. Problem is I only like them when they are really really ripe, but then before I get to them, they turn all brown :(

I know what you mean. I only buy about 4 at a time.:)

See, my boy (el mono) used to eat lots of bananas. In fact, he got his nickname because he used to climb all over and up stuff at a precocious age, then one day he climbed up on the kitchen counter and ate like three bananas by ripping them apart from the middle, which I don't even think is actually possible.

So now that he's four he never eats bananas, but banana acquisition has not slowed down, so there is a lot of pressure on me to eat bananas. Ironically, I think it's the banana stress that is increasing my blood pressure

I corrected the word "buy" in my post. But you still have my illiteracy on record in your quote.

I am not typo-sensitive. For example, I am too lazy to use any accents in French.

Why do words bother people so much? If I go out and shoot some film for a home movie and I'm telling people what to do in the scene, I'm a director.

Producer is a catch all term for somebody that creates or takes part in the creation of music, either for themselves or somebody else.

I don't see a huge deal if somebody says they produce music. I think the problem is in your definition of what differentiates good music from bad. In your sense "canned beats" make a producer not a good one.

Therefore, why don't you instead say, "he's a producer, and he produces shit." That would be a better way to put it.

Let me put it to you like this. I hate Picasso. I hate Cubism. I think it's a retarded way to paint. Every "art lover" that I ever talk to cringes when I say this. They say anything can be art. So those guys that throw paint splatter on a canvas or take a crap in a jar and call it "ART." I think that's bullcrap.

So I think I see where you're coming from, but on the other hand, Picasso, as much as I hate to call him an artist, is definitely an artist. Even somebody with a crayola crayon drawing an apple is an artist.

Therefore, a producer, even if using canned beats and fruity loops is still a producer.

The trick is, not to care soo much. Who cares if there are pseudo-producers, wannabe rock stars, Acid Pro Engineers... You should care more about your own music capabilities than those of others.

I think Timbaland, P Diddy and Dr. Dre are both hacks personally. Why? For personal reasons. I don't care that their music is popular. What I do know is that their songs are all REMAKES of previous songs recorded. Every single song. None are original except maybe those "canned beat" arrangements. Therefore, it's hard for me to respect somebody who took the bassline of a Bootsy Collins song and turned it into a hit pop rap single.

Hell, even Mary J Blige has done nothing but gain fame off re-recording other peoples music. Do I hate them all for bastardizing the integrity of the entire recording industry? Yes. Does it ultimately affect me? Nope.

Dr. Dre's rich, good for him. He got rich stealing other peoples music and laying it down with a funky track. Go him. I wish I had thought of it first. Then I'd be a scumbag too, albeit a rich scumbag.

Before you talk shit about Dre I'd recommend you look at how much of his work is composition as opposed to sampled.

Picasso could and did paint like an old master, and cubism was only one of his periods.

Bob Ezrin is a "PRODUCER".

Mutt Lange is a "PRODUCER".

Bob Rock is a "PRODUCER".

I can go on with a list longer than this page will fit. These people are "PRODUCERS".

They know EVERYTHING about sound engineering, arranging, instrumentation, micing techniques, monitoring, etc... They know when to put something in and when to take it out (get your mind out of the gutter). They know how to coax the best performance out of a performer. They know about frequencies, polarity, phase inversion, dynamics, and more about sound than most of us ever will.

They`ve paid their dues by spending an eternity in studios learning their craft.

Loading pre-recorded "beats" into your pirated DAW in your Mama`s basement does NOT make you a "PRODUCER". Find a different title. "PRODUCER" is already taken. I understand that the word "PRODUCER" has probably got you laid more than once, but you`re not a "PRODUCER".

I have no problem with what you do. It`s an art-form in itself. But, please, stop calling yourself a "PRODUCER". It`s an insult to those who have earned that title by learning and perfecting their craft. They`ve already forgotten more than you`ll ever know.

I`ve known "PRODUCERS". Most of them were "PRODUCING" long before I was born.

Senator, you`re no "PRODUCER".

:D

lol man you are at it today..lmao i don't think I am a producer I think I am an engineer in training..that was great Rami you made my day:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I think you're missing the boat a little here. We're not debating Webster's definition or people's rights to call themselves what they will. It's more of an opportunity to poke fun at people who stumble upon software and a couple of samples and suddenly call themselves "producers" in order to either: a) sleep with women or b) make vain attempts to look cool to their "dawgs".

Dre is more than a producer. He helped bring a whole new genre of music into the forefront. What he didn't do was walk around talking about his "Mad Skilz Making Syck Beats" two weeks after ripping some audio software off BitTorrent.

.

Performing an act, and giving yourself a "professional title" are 2 different things. I write, arrange, play all the instruments, do all the vocals, and yes...."produce" my own music. But if someone asks me what I do, as in "what do you do for a living", I have no right to say "I'm a producer". I'd never put it on a business card, or even start a sentence with it.

It has nothing to do with the type of music. If someone puts pre-recorded rock, jazz or classical music into their DAW and calls themselves a "Producer", what would you say then??? Putting pre-recorded music into some software does not make someone a producer....maybe a "Karoake Master" at best.

I find it amusing that so many people are defending hip-hop when I never mentioned hip-hop. Like I said, that says something right there. I think there's some kind of collective guilty conscience going on with that crowd for some reason. I wonder why.

I love Dr. Dre, and I think a lot, if not most of what he does isn't just samples that he gets Snoop to talk over. He IS a producer.

George Martin is rolling in his grave. Or, at least he will be when he's dead. :D :D :D
