Do I need powered speakers; speakers that plug in to wall electric
or can I just use any speaker ? This Tascam does have phatom power
to the mics.

you'll plug in what they call ACTIVE MONITORS, or ACTIVE STUDIO MONITORS....most likely. Thats what everyones buying.
Each speaker cab has its own built in amplifier.

so all you need is the cables. one for the right, and one for the left.

and yeah the ACTIVE MONITOR/speakers will come with a plug for the wall.

Look at ZZsounds and search active monitors or something.

I read an article on that unit, very cool...and has the Analog feel with the Digital Positives. The CDR completes it, imo.

how good does it sound?

Hi, how good does this recorder sound? I have a Tascam 238S that I picked up that has never been used! Never! I also got the remote with it, it too has not been used, all in the original boxes. How does this (your Tascam 01)compare to something like the 238s? Have you had experience with high speed cassette? I have also read, but am not sure if it is really an issue, but the capstan motors in some Tascam products go bad often, is this true? and what would cause a short life, underdesigned? :(
thonks for any info

I've never had the DPO1FX/CDR. your at 16bit, digital format so thats not an issue. any sound problems would be your front end.....buit for this kind of HR deck it has some good reviews.

the 238 is a nice unit, imo. i was once a analog guy, but the digital has gotten so user friendly...digitals not an issue with me...so between the two i wouldn't use the 238 much?

i'd sell it!! go get some good monitors....headphones, mics, preamps...guitars, amps.....Lava Lamp. :D
