Sound Card Dilemma

I had a direct pro 24/96 and I thought it really was a great product. Two big plus' is the headphone out and that it's a 4 in 6 out. Many people here keep saying that it's a 4x4. I replaced it with the delta 1010 and a mackie 1202 VLZ pro. Not to mention the cable hassel, I just don't have the simplicity that the 24/96 offered, and I'll say it once again, having the headphone out rocks. The headphone out on the mackie doesn't sound nearly as good.

gbvgbv: Have you bought your computer yet? I'm thinking about building custom daw's that beat the pants off of anything else out there right now. Let me know if you are interested. wexus6@aol.com

The Direct Pro 24/96 look like a nice unit but I find it a bit dodgy to pay for onboard DSP effects when they cannot be used in 24/96

The DSP effects are disabled in 96kHz mode. They don't tell you in the specs but it's mentioned in a couple of reviews.

thanx ola - well it sux that they dont mention that in the specs.

another guy told me that he'll record either at 44.1 and be able to use compression and effects, or he'll record at 96 and add the effects with n-track.

If you gonna use software compression, use Wave's Rennaissance Compressor. It sounds VERY similar to a real hardware compressor and I think it adds a little warmth to your audio.

You have to watch out of all these little things that they forget to mention in the specs. It's like some USB prosumer audio card that has 24bit converters but the transfer rate of USB limits it to 16bit anyway. How useful.

Also, never trust that "drivers will be available soon". They never are. Make sure that there are drivers available when you buy and not "released in a couple of weeks".
