Sm57 problem

You can unscrew it in the middle but obviously dont yank it around, check for loose cables etc.. However i doubt you will see anything, in mine it is all covered in a kind of dried hot glue.
Dont take the top off, it is so hard to get back on and you might break the diaphragm.

Hitting both that phantom power button and the high gain button result in an increase in gain for a SM57. SM57s are dynamic and don't need phantom power, but if you crank more juice through it, the line signal's going to get hotter. at least on my rig. i could be wrong. i'll go home and check tonight.

Yer i could have sworn that it did with mine!

The way this reads, you are pushing both the phantom power AND the high gain button, and attributing the increased gain to the 57 getting phantom power. That's like stepping harder on the gas pedal while simultaniously turning up the car stereo and saying turning up the volume made your car go faster. Also, the increase in gain isn't in the 57, it's in the preamp.

Phantom power is applied to both pins 2 & 3, which on a balanced mic means that there is no potential created, and no current flows. So, you're not cranking more juice through it.

ok, when i get home it's test time.

hi gain button off, phantom off - the way i usually have it. volume on the SM57 is fine.

I'm going to leave the hi gain button out of this, so nothing can be attributed to it.

i'm going to hit the phantom button. if there's any change, i'll let you guys know.

i got home and hit the phantom power button. no change. SM57 isn't affected!

and btw i deleted all of those posts NOT to prevent me looking stupid, which i blatently was :o But to stop other people getting the wrong idea. Cause i know the only reason i though that was cause i read it somewhere.
SheppardB your right, at least i think so. I will try it out again when my mixer comes. could it be possible that my xlr cable is wired wrong IF this actually does work?
Man,you seem like a nice guy and I dont think you were trying to offer up
mis-information on purpose,I think you were mis-informed somewhere along
the way.I think it was very big of you to admit that you were wrong and
to delete your posts.
It is very unfair that assholes like Chessrock dont see that.Instead of telling us why, they prefer to poke fun, which is a surefire indicator that they dont know shit.
Before I ever found this BBS,I stumbled across Harvey.I asked that guy some
of the stupidest questions imaginable. He never treated me like an idiot, and he always answered my questions.
You have certain folks on this bbs that think they are My(Gods) gift to recor-ing,but the truth is they cant act so superior on a pro bbs w/o being laughed at.They come here with 6 grade mentalities to poke fun at guys that
dont know a preamp from a hole in the ground.
Dont sweat though,a good A.E. only makes about $10 bux an hr and it takes 4 of them to change a light bulb.(one to change it and 3 to say they would have used different mic applications)

It could be that some moisture has entered the mic. That happened to one of my SP B1 mics (very high humidity was the cause in my case...... but there's many ways that moisture of some type can affect a mic).
In my case I just placed the mic in a dry, airy, low humidity place for a week. After that it worked perfectly again.
