ok then!

thanks to harvey!

when i had my first multitrack, a tascam porta1, way back in the day i got an sm58 to go with it. i got a regular mic cable and the transformer. i probably should have gotten an xlr to 1/4" cable!

you live. you learn. hopefully.

Tascam 1/4" mic inputs are 50K ohms, which means you definitely needed the transformer not just the cable.

There really aren't any standards that everybody adheres to when it comes to mic connector ends, except maybe XLR is for balanced low impedance. Everything else is wide open, to whatever the equipment maker want to use it for.

If you have a TRS connector on the end of the mic, it MAY be balanced, or the ring may run a voltage. Even 1/4" TRS ain't much of a standard - look at mics for computers with their little 1/8" connectors.

Balanced low impedance input circuitry costs more to manufacture than unbalanced low impedance circuitry.

Unbalanced low impedance circuitry costs more to manufacture than unbalance high impedance circuitry

Hmm...

My two 57's have done everything but suck the grubs out of the garden...
They've cleaned dishes and even clubed a drummer or two (Wrapping them in a towel like the Marines do with a flashlight is VERY effective!)...

They still sound GREAT...

(And - NO - I don't use a Sound Blaster!)
