i've never tried my sm57 on vocals...i use it for guitar cabs

but i will say this...some of the rap vocal tracks i've heard sound like they were recorded with the built in mic in a chessy boom box though

Maybe that's the vocal sound he was going for and was severely disappointed when the SM57 wouldn't give it to him! :p

I dunno. Isn't that about what a 57 would sound like crammed into a Soundblaster?

rapper dude, you say you even tried to back off the 57 a couple inches and it was still muddy. Here is a clue dude, the 57 ain't pussy, you ain't supposed to eat it!

Yah, save your breath. He's already back down to the Shizack gettin' a real mizic!

I did the lead vocal for my song "Your Life Story" with a '57.... I totally disagree with this young fellow, I think the vocals sound great for the mic it is.....

But, If I had any sort of say, I would tell you that you need to go out and buy a AT4033

At the risk of boring all my fellow collegues here, who have heard this song a zillion times, here is a link, and you can hear how decent a 57 can sound on lead vocals...

I think it's your ears, or the rest of your set up, OR something wrong with the 57 you have (highly doubtful)...

...Buttttt thats just MY opinion.

I've figured it out!!

the "auto-rap" and "auto-sing" feature only works if you get the on/off switch version!!!

Oh boy...you guys are way harsh. Friggin' funny nonetheless. I felt bad laughing so hard at all the comments.

I personally find my daughter's Barbie Singalong Karaoke mic to be my favorite workhorse mic. Forget all the tried and true studio standards. I'm forging my own way.

:D :D :D

If you are into rap, the sm57 isnt your mic, get the 58. and the muddy sound has a cure Its called EQ. If you are a rap guy Ill bet all of your bass parameters are all the way up. Try only boosting this on the Bass drum if you can

damn thats good stuff........thanks for the laugh
That Barbie thing mic is a great idea.....hehehe

rapper, all kidding aside (very funny BTW!), the Shure SM57 is
a classic dynamic microphone-when used properly!

You can cut down on the bass response by being farther away
from the mike (4-6 inches). A quality mic pre will also bring out
the "hidden beauty" of a '57. What kind of mic pre are you using
right now?

Also, as you may know, you should ALWAYS use a pop screen
when recording your vocals-especially with a '57.

Keeping it at "forehead" height and aiming towards your nose
also helps with cutting down on "pops" and sibilance too.

It took me a while to learn how to use a '57, and a Sennheiser
421-now I love them both!

Good luck,
Chris

P.S. Many hits have been scored with the '57 and they'll be more
to come!

u mean as in "scritcha-scratcha"?

I got confused readin' this thread. Am I supposed to eat the Barbie mic's pussy before it goes into my Gemini, or not?

I told ya all. Mine finally fell apart after 30+ years and being dropped a zillion times.

Maybe I could send it back and get a refund.

Wait - I did find the duct tape and it's working fine now.

Wasn't Radio Shack selling Sure mic's at one point?... I sort of vaguely remember that...

I think some of the old "High Balls" were made by Shure.

if you want to get the most out of your 57 then you have to scream into it just right. think finesse screaming. think tube screaming.

Nope. We're talking about rap here. Finesse screaming & tube screaming are for real artists. Totally different thing.

rapper probably isn't reading this thread by now, but, shit, most of you smartasses really should back the fuck off.
