Do you have studio monitors?

Yeah, they are powered. You're suggesting I mic the monitors?

Heh, now that is something I didn't think of....

that's exactly where I was going. I've heard people get pretty good results that way.

Ok thanks, I'll give it a try. I've got decent monitors so hopefully I can make it sound good.

Thanks!

the whole "if you're a good guitarist, you can get a good tone out of anything," line can seem pretty old sometimes... but it does ring true. john petrucci will sound good out of anything, be it a mesa, marshall, or a damn silvertone. i can get pleasing sounds out of a crate, but you can't get any out of a mesa? come on dude, you're stretching the truth beyond its limits here.
i played out of a dual rectifier on my band's last album (i do play solos, too), and our other guitarist played through a marshall jcm 2000... a sin to you, i know. i hated the rectifier mesas when i went into the studio, loved them when i came out. both amps were beautiful, and very easy to tame. the funny thing is, mesa will put their best technology out there in full production amps, but marshall only does with their "limited production, hot pink, modified just like the jcm jesus himself played," amps. what does this tell you?
when i played with taking back sunday a couple of years ago, they used to use a sovtek mig and a laney head. eddie now uses a mesa and their newer guitarist fred uses a marshall jcm 2000. they played just as great as before, and the fans couldn't care less. they may have had them rebiased by their tech, but neither are modded. also, you completely distorted the whole thrice topic. the band BOUGHT their amps off of ebay. there were no "secrets" traded/destroyed, just some money via paypal or money order. i also think its pretty awesome of you to write off a band as a one-hit-wonder, just because you care so much about music that you will only listen to what is playing on your local clear channel station... hats off to ignorance.

I still think thrice blows. They ripped off Def Leppard as their only claim to fame. Sorry, maybe you like bands with lead singers who sound like they are 14, I am frankly worn out on them.

I will agree, the best guitarist can sound good through anything but a great amp will not help a sloppy guitarist. That's well known.

Having the opportunity to use Marshalls, Mark IVs and Rectifiers, I would put them in that order. Yes, that's my opinion and personal preference, so is yours for the Mesa.

Use what you want, what you think makes you sound good.

I'll stick with the brown sound that I can only get with my Marshall (and close with the Mark IV).

Cheers to your opinions. I like hearing them all. Don't have to agree with them, but like hearing them.

You're welcome.

I have a bunch of stuff I've recorded with my Dual Rectumfier. Some live, some studio some heavy some blues. All with different players/guitars. I want you to listen to some of it. I think you'll be suprised at the variety of flavors it can produce. If you can honestly say it sounds like ass, then so be it. I just really think you had a bad experience with them once and it really turned you off. No big deal I guess it happens all the time. I just get a little defensive when people talk bad about my baby.

No problem, I'd love to hear it. I get crap all the time for using Marshall from people who swear by Mesa's. It's cool, I am just giving my opinion based on the tone I prefer. I can only get it with Marshall.

What's your web addy?

well silversurfer, your tone seems to have deffinately changed in your recent posts, and i'm glad. yeah, his voice is rather high, and maybe they did rip off def leppard... but i hate def leppard... to each his own. you have to reallize, though, that just because they had that one single that you heard, doesn't mean thats the only thing they did. i've been listening to them for four years, as have a lot of other people. so only giving them credit for that one song isn't exactly accurate.

The first two are live clips I recorded of a band that opened for my band.

These 2 are from a band that I'm tracking an album for. These are not mixed by the way. Basically faders up and some panning. Only the first has vocals. And sadly, no lead tracks yet.

I'll post 1 of me covering SRV crossfire later. It's pretty nice.

Actually I went to Thrice's site after hearing that song. I love Def Leppard (first 3 albums) and it was disappointing to hear them rip off Steve Clark (rip) like that. I listened to their stuff and I just can't stomach it.

Again, not my cup of tea. But then again, I don't HAVE to listen to them :D

If they are good enough to have an endorsment, Mesa will custom make their head to their specs..

but wait......i thought that a good player wouldn't touch mesa?

SilverSurfer said:
I'm sure the guts were replaced with a standard Mesa before that happened. Bands don't give away their secrets on eBay...

what the hell are you talking about? the dudes in that band are ebay geeks......so i'm just assuming they bought the amp on ebay.......they didn't sell it on there.

SilverSurfer said:
They must have Marshall guts in those Mesa's. Just like the 5150 does ;)..

right. i'm sure.

How long have you been in the music business? After 20 years, I've seen a lot. My parents were in it before me. My dad owns a recording studio (though admittedly I never learned that part of the business from him, but even he'll tell you what they use live and in the studio are never the same). I live near Hollywood and I've played with probably 1000 bands. I've seen what these bands are using. The more famous ones are NOT using stock Mesa amps. Trust me on that.

you sure do sound like you've been in the music business 20 years.

show me proof that mesa is making different dual and triple rectifiers for 'the big boys' that endorse mesa than they are making for the average consumer. maybe there are some that are being modified.....i'd be willing to bet not many though.

Both the DSL/TSL and 6100's can cut their wattage in half to 50 with the push of a button. No need to rip out two power tubes or get a teeny amp.

he is going to need a lot less than 50 watts if he want's to keep from bothering his family while they're sleeping. unless he is going to be playing live with a band, he NEEDS a "teeny" tube amp.

this is all your opinion. and obviously you're an ignorant 15 year old. that's ok.

also. i said nothing of thrices talent. honestly i don't love them. for a metal'ish band, they have good guitar tone though.

dude. just shut up. you're a moron. get over it. maybe take a break and when you come back you can try to be helpful and we'll all forget about it. ok?

also, give me a link to the def leapord song thrice ripped off. i kinda dig def leapord, but i've never heard anything from them that sounded like thrice may have ripped it off.

why would you even talk about the singer from thrices voice sounding like a 14 year olds?

dude......you love def leapord. joe elliott has a high pitched, cheesy voice. now don't get me wrong........that's all part of the def leapord experience and like i said before.....i kinda dig it, but the fact that you also dig it, really gives you no right to say anything about the dude from thrice.

Awesome. Please do. Thanks for posting these clips! As long as this thread has become a Marshall sound / Mesa sound thread (I feel like Dr. Frankenstein - "It's aliiiiiivvee!!!"), anyone out there care to post a clip or two showcasing Marshall?

Sure I can. Joe Elliott doesn't sound like a pre-pubscent boy. People bag on Def Leppard all the time, why is it not OK to bag on Thrice for stealing their riffs?!

It's just an opinion. You might not like it, but that doesn't mean I don't have a right to say it. That's what makes America beautiful.

Which Marshall do you want to hear? I can find some live clips of us covering a Lep song. You can hear my other guitarist's 30th before I got mine. His sounds so sweet!

That's why Thrice uses them...

Ah, so you're assuming...that's good to admit it.

Ask Kirk Hammett or James Hetfield if they use "off the shelf" Mesa's. They do not. Ask any BIG band what they use in the studio, it will not be an "off the shelf" amp.

Know what you're talking about, please.

this is all your opinion. and obviously you're an ignorant 15 year old. that's ok.

Ah insults. The first resort of someone without a valid argument....

Helpful? I see, only if I *agree* with you am I being helpful. Again, you might not like my opinion but if you can't handle a difference of opinion without resorting to insulting someone, perhaps it's YOU that needs a break. You're way more stressed out than you need to be.
