Simple setup for live gig needed

Hi, all

I've been thinking of putting together a relatively cheap (under $500? please?) setup for recording live gigs... Basically, my fiancee plays a number of jams and sits in on other people's gigs quite often and I'd like to get a recording done of some of those.

The problem is, of course, that I won't have access to the mixer or to the amps on the various instruments to record. These are, however, mostly very small gigs, so I figure I can get away with something fairly simple.

I'm thinking either a decent tape deck or a DAT, but what sort of mic should I use? I think I can assume I have AC, but if being able to run on batteries would be prefered.

I guess what I'm looking for is the same sort of thing that people who bootleg concerts use. Of course, I've got permission from the bands to record them... I'm a good boy, I am.

Try this idea:

Stereo vcr-$150
Behringer mini mixer-$100
Pair used Radio Shack PZM mikes -$100
headphones-$50

The stereo VCR is close to CD quality. No kidding,it really records stereo signals of very high quality. The little mixer will be needed to set the levels. The PZM mikes eliminate funky echoes and room resonances that make many live recordings sound like a tin can was the venue.Tape the plate of the PZM mikes to the wall or ceiling. They need to be attached to a big flat surface to work (ceiling, floor, wall).
I have a sample of my band taped live in the drummer's garage using PZMs at http://redrival.com/tomh/mybestfriendsgirl.asf

Cool. The only problem is that I can see getting the PZM mics taped to the wall being a problem in some live settings - I really have to minimize the amount of cables, etc that I run. I really need small :)

Thanks for the other stuff, though - that's a good starting point.

Hmm. Any other options for mics though? I figure one way or another I'll get it stored - video, tape, dat or minidisc, but I'm really at a loss as to what sort of mics can deal with the whole sound well. I like the idea of the PZM mics, but they don't seem appropriate as far as just sitting down and having things work, which I sorta need.

The other problem with the PZM mics is I doubt they would attach very well to the rough stone walls in that bar my fiancee normally jams in.

Put 'em on the table.Any flat surface will do.Or just a pair of good old SM57s.
